Hungary’s new government has nixed plans to build a SANAA-designed National Gallery in Budapest.  Basel Social Club is launching Tokyo Jazz Club in November.  Greece rejected a request from Frankfurt’s Liebieghaus Sculpture Collection to borrow Parthenon marbles because of the British Museum’s participation. The museum project, located in the city’s Városliget City Park development, home to several new cultural institutions, would have hosted the country’s national collection, which is currently housed in a castle whose structure is not “viable long-term.” While the planned 538,200 square-foot museum had experienced delays and some opposition from environmental groups, it was slowly moving forward until June 18, when Hungary’s new government officially abandoned the project. Instead, its remaining building sites will be made into public parkland. For now, the future location of the national collection remains undecided, and the project’s backers are hopeful …

A 21-gun salute echoed over Oslo at the start of the procession on Wednesday from the royal palace to Oslo Cathedral. Harald’s son, King Haakon VIII, and other senior royals walked behind the coffin, which was draped in the red Norwegian royal standard. Harald, who died on August 28 aged 89, was Europe’s oldest reigning monarch and had been on the throne for 35 years. He modernised the royal house but refused to follow the example of other elderly monarchs who have abdicated in recent years. The National Portrait Gallery in London, which is home to paintings of Hans Holbein the Younger, Anthony Van Dyck, and Joshua Reynolds, is welcoming contemporary artists to the museum as part of a new program called Artist Focus. The gallery’s Weston Wing will host three exhibitions annually with free admission, starting with the American-born British artist Issy Wood, whose show will be on view October 9 through to February 28, 2027. In 2025, Wood made headlines for painting pop star Charli XCX for the cover of Vanity Fair. Stephan Jost, the director and CEO of the Art Gallery of Ontario, will leave his posts at the end of the year, the Toronto museum announced on Tuesday. Within the Canadian art scene, Jost’s leadership has been polarizing. He has drawn praise for making a significant investment in modern and contemporary art at the AGO, which acquired a range of important artworks in that area, including 450 works by Diane Arbus, 200 works by Peter Hujar, and 227 works by Hiroshi Sugimoto. In 2027, the museum will open a new gallery for modern and contemporary art that spans 40,000 square feet and five floors. A range of politicians and public figures have criticized the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for its forthcoming controversial John Galliano show, including dealer Arne Glimcher, the founder of Pace Gallery, one of the biggest such entreprises in the world. A New York Times report published on Friday revealed that the Met has privately faced criticism over the exhibition for Galliano, a fashion designer who was convicted of a hate crime in France in 2011 for antisemitic comments. He later apologized for these comments and went to rehab. He returned to the industry as creative director of Maison Margiela, a role he held from 2014 to 2024.
