Published On 23 Jul 202623 Jul 2026 After more than two and a half years of near-constant bombardment, people in Gaza are now facing a deepening shelter crisis. The scale of physical destruction is estimated in the tens of billions of dollars, but the reality is measured in human terms: households without water or electricity; children sleeping in torn tents; and rodents breeding beneath nearby rubble. More than 92 percent of homes have been damaged or destroyed by Israel’s war, according to the United Nations. Families are erecting shelters wherever they can, pitching tents on the ruins of their houses, sealing off collapsing mosques with plastic sheeting, or stitching together makeshift structures from whatever materials are available. At least 850,000 people require emergency shelter assistance, lacking even basic items such as plastic sheeting, rope and plywood, according to the Palestine Shelter Cluster. Continuing Israeli restrictions on the entry of critical materials needed to replace, repair and reinforce shelters are preventing humanitarian organisations from responding at the necessary scale. The Louvre reopened its now-infamous Apollo Gallery on July 22, nine months after a group of thieves lifted $102 million worth of Napoleon era jewels from the Paris museum. The brazen daytime heist took less than eight minutes, during which time thieves, disguised as construction workers, used a monte-meubles, or a moving exterior staircase, to break into the Apollo Gallery. Once inside, they quickly absconded with nine bejeweled objects, including a tiara, a necklace, earrings, and a brooch. Only Empress Eugénie’s diamond-and-emerald-encrusted crown, which the thieves dropped while escaping on scooters, has been recovered. Related Articles The lavishly decorated Apollo Gallery, however, will no longer house what remains of the Louvre’s collection of crown jewels. Instead, Louvre director Christophe Leribault told Reuters, the remaining jewels will be on view in a more secure location elsewhere in the vast museum. That’s a wrap on day 1 of the Electrek Formula Sun Grand Prix (FSGP) 2026! For the first time, FSGP is running at Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, Minnesota, a 3.1-mile road course better known for racing cars of the gas kind…until this week. The energy among students was high, and the wind gusts were even higher. Crosswinds of 16-plus mph raked the track all day, nudging cars along where the wind sat at their backs and adding to drag where head-on. This is the event’s largest attendance in history. A record 39 teams registered this year, and 15 of them passed “scrunteering” safety checks and were able to start on the line this morning for day one of racing. Two artists have sued Manhattan art gallery The Hole, alleging roughly $50,000 in unpaid proceeds from sales of their artwork. In a lawsuit filed in Manhattan Supreme Court on July 16, artists Daniel Um and Nastaran Shahbazi say they provided multiple paintings and other artworks to The Hole for display and sale on consignment between 2024 and 2026. The artists allege that, despite receiving partial payments, they are still owed a combined total of nearly $50,000—$28,975 to Um and $21,000 to Shahbazi. Related Articles According to the filing, when Um and Shahbazi sought payment from the gallery, they were told the business was financially strained and could not issue payments at that time. New York law requires consignment proceeds to remain the artist’s property and prohibits galleries from using those funds for operating expenses. Artists’ payments cannot be contingent on a gallery’s other income, as Um and Shahbazi allege happened at The Hole. “[The Hole] did exactly what the statute forbids,” Um and Shahbazi’s suit alleges, claiming that the gallery sold their consigned artworks, collected …

David Zwirner has closed its Upper East Side gallery, ending nearly a decade at the townhouse at 34 East 69th Street as the blue-chip dealer continues to concentrate its New York operations downtown. A spokesperson for the gallery told ARTNews that the move had been planned for a while. “It was always our plan to leave the Upper East Side once the last phase of our Chelsea overhaul was complete,” the spokesperson said in an email. “With our Selldorf-designed space at 525 West 19th Street now reopened with our current exhibition, In Solidarity, that moment has arrived — and we’re sad to leave the Upper East Side. Flash flooding in New York City this weekend has presented a new test for the New Museum, which experienced a significant water leak on Saturday in a gallery housing work by WangShui. Video footage shared with ARTnews and confirmed by the museum as accurate shows water pooling on the gallery floor as staff members move quickly to place buckets beneath active leaks, as well as water streaming down the didactic for “New Humans: Memories of the Future”. The incident comes months after the opening of the museum’s $82 million expansion, which faced scrutiny after its debut over reported faulty construction and facilities, including unfinished details and concerns raised by contractors and observers about the building’s final stages. The museum closed early on Saturday and will remain closed Sunday due to the flash flood warning, according to a statement posted on Instagram. Murmurs, a gallery located in Downtown Los Angeles that was known for its eye for spotting rising talent, announced this week that it will close after seven years in business. Its final exhibition was a solo for Rodrigo Ramírez Rodríguez, which ended on June 27. In an Instagram post, cofounders Allison Littrell and Morgan Elder and director Gabrielle Datau wrote that the “bittersweet news” came after “a long period of reflection.” They cited the “intense economic squeeze” that the art world is currently facing.
