Kilmar Abrego Garcia charges dropped, judge says Trump DOJ case vindictive

Chip Somodevilla | Getty Images A federal judge in Tennessee on Friday dismissed human smuggling charges against Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran migrant whose mistaken deportation by the Trump administration became a flashpoint in President Donald Trump’s broader immigration crackdown. U.S. District Judge Waverly Crenshaw ruled that the Justice Department’s prosecution of Abrego Garcia was “vindictive,” finding that the government would not have brought the case had he not challenged his deportation. “Then-Attorney General Robert H. Jackson warned his fellow prosecutors long ago of the danger of picking the person first and the crime second,” Crenshaw wrote at the top of the 32-page ruling. “That is the situation here.” The DOJ plans to appeal, saying in a statement that “another activist judge has placed politics above public safety. The judge’s order is wrong and dangerous, and we will …

Judge dismisses criminal charges against Kilmar Abrego Garcia in human trafficking case

Judge dismisses criminal charges against Kilmar Abrego Garcia in human trafficking case

A federal judge in Tennessee dismissed the criminal charges against Kilmar Abrego Garcia on Friday, finding that the investigation into his alleged involvement with human trafficking was “tainted.” Subscribe to read this story ad-free Get unlimited access to ad-free articles and exclusive content. He said the probe was only launched to justify the government’s decision to remove him to El Salvador. “The objective evidence here shows that, absent Abrego’s successful lawsuit challenging his removal to El Salvador, the Government would not have brought this prosecution,” U.S. District Judge Waverly Crenshaw wrote in his decision. Prosecutors in the Middle District of Tennessee were investigating him with the support of the Department of Justice in Washington. After Abrego was deported to El Salvador last year, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the Trump administration had to work to bring him back. He was eventually returned to the U.S. and was immediately hit with human smuggling charges, based on a 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee. He pleaded not guilty. Andy Garcia on His LA Noir Film ‘Diamond’: Cannes 2026

Andy Garcia on His LA Noir Film ‘Diamond’: Cannes 2026

Diamond, Andy Garcia’s detective story that will bow at the Cannes Film Festival, is a modern-day marvel — a Los Angeles-set film that actually shot in the city. At a time when headlines decry productions fleeing the city, Diamond, which filmed everywhere from the Bradbury Building to the Paramour Estate, is a reminder of why the city is sorely missed onscreen. Set in modern-day L.A., the film stars Garcia as the titular gumshoe, Joe Diamond, who is a relic from another time, favoring suits to athleisure and is happily at home on a barstool. When he is hired by a wealthy woman (played by Vicky Krieps) whose husband ends up dead in their hilltop mansion, Diamond investigates the case that also leads him to truths about his own mysterious past. Surrounding Diamond is a group of supporting characters, like a Chinese food-loving coroner (Dustin Hoffman), a glad-handing DA (Brendan Fraser) and sympathetic bartender (Bill Murray). Ahead of Cannes, Garcia talked to THR about making his modern L.A.-set noir, Bogey’s best films, and how Ocean’s 11 helped him land his co-star. Noirs have such a long history in …

Prince Chronicler Steve Parke and Wife Mayte Garcia Mark a Decade Since His Death

The two agree that Prince’s work environment was one of constant searching, openness, and experimentation, with Prince calling the shots and making suggestions of all kinds, but respecting the judgment and agency of his collaborators, encouraging them to try new things—and even new artistic disciplines. “When I was working with him, the creative high was such that I never thought ‘Ugh, I have to go to Paisley’ or ‘Wow, it’s my turn to go on stage.’ It was never like that because it was all pure, it was all passionate… If I had to define it in any way it would be to say it was otherworldly, and even then it’s an understatement. Even when he put me to sing—and I don’t consider myself a singer—despite being so particular, there was always an exchange of views and he always made me believe that I could do other new things. In fact, he encouraged me to take lessons during my pregnancy,” Garcia recalls. “I tended to say yes to any opportunity I was given, but sometimes, …

UK puts Diego Garcia handover on hold to appease Trump – POLITICO

UK puts Diego Garcia handover on hold to appease Trump – POLITICO

The U.S. president has changed his mind multiple times on the issue. But in February, Trump warned Starmer that he was “making a big mistake” in giving over the island. “This land should not be taken away from the U.K. and, if it is allowed to be, it will be a blight on our Great Ally,” Trump said. The British government earlier this week acknowledged that it’s running out of time to pass the legislation. “We continue to believe the agreement is the best way to protect the long-term future of the base, but we have always said we would only proceed with the deal if it has U.S. support,” a U.K. government spokesperson said Saturday, according to the Guardian. The agreement was meant to avoid a potentially painful and expensive legal dispute with Mauritius over the former colony. Indeed, after Trump’s intervention last month, Mauritius said that it was exploring legal tools against London. Toby Noskwith, a spokesperson for campaign group Indigenous Chagossian People, told Reuters that questions needed to be asked about “the …

Iran’s strike on Diego Garcia will be ringing alarm bells across Europe

Iran’s strike on Diego Garcia will be ringing alarm bells across Europe

Iran’s reported attack on the Diego Garcia military base, deep in the Indian Ocean, with two ballistic missiles has raised alarm bells across the West. The Khorramshahr-4, a 20-tonne rocket that can carry 80 cluster munitions, is thought to have been the weapon fired at the joint UK-US base in the Chagos Islands. Defence analysts told The Telegraph that the attempted strike on a base more than 2,400 miles away could put continental Europe – and possibly even Britain – under threat from Iranian ballistic missiles. “London, Paris, Berlin and every other European capital now lies within credible Iranian reach,” said Brigadier General Ran Kochav, a former Rusi research fellow and ex-commander of the Israeli air and missile force. Most experts think the Khorramshahr-4 has a maximum range of around 1,900 miles. This would put it in range of UK and other military bases in southern and eastern Europe, including Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, the Balkans and perhaps even Italy, Austria and Germany. The IDF claimed on Saturday that a range of 2,500 miles may be …

UK confirms Iran unsuccessfully targeted Diego Garcia base – POLITICO

U.K. Royal Air Force jets and other British military assets are “continuing to defend our people and personnel” in the region, as the U.K. has also given permission for the U.S. to use British bases for “specific and limited” defensive operations, they said. Iran’s targeting of Diego Garcia occurred before the U.K. on Friday confirmed that U.S. use of its bases includes defensive operations against “missile sites and capabilities being used to attack ships in the Strait of Hormuz.” The access to U.K. bases has been granted for RAF Fairford in the U.K. and Diego Garcia. Israel and Iran launched fresh attacks on each other on Saturday, the latest in a string of attacks since the U.S. and Israel launched strikes on Tehran in late February. The U.S. is sending thousands more Marines to the Middle East, according to media reports, even as U.S. President Donald Trump broached “winding down” American military operations in the region.  Source link

UK says Iran missile attack on Diego Garcia failed | Conflict

NewsFeed The UK says Iran launched ballistic missiles at the joint US-UK Diego Garcia base in the Indian Ocean, calling the attack unsuccessful. London condemned Tehran’s actions as “reckless,” but one analyst says it’s not surprising Tehran would aim for this “prime target.” Published On 21 Mar 202621 Mar 2026 Click here to share on social media share2 Share googleAdd Al Jazeera on Googleinfo Source link
