IPSO: Times OK to say BBC ignored Bill Gates climate U-turn despite Today coverage

Bill Gates pictured in October 2023. Picture: Shutterstock/Alexandros Michailidis The Times was entitled to say in a leader column that the BBC produced “no coverage” of an intervention by Bill Gates on climate change despite it being discussed on Radio 4’s flagship Today programme, press regulator IPSO has found. During the week of 3 November, the story was discussed for several minutes on the Today programme, for around seven minutes on BBC Radio Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, and for two minutes on a BBC World Service Newshour segment. The Times had used it as an example of what the BBC chooses not to cover in a critical leader column the following week. It said that “one of the BBC’s biggest problems is not just what it covers, but what it chooses not to cover. For example, there was no coverage of Bill Gates’s rethink on climate change last week – a significant intervention from one of the world’s richest men – presumably because it did not fit with a metropolitan world view.” The Energy and …

California attorney general election guide: Bonta vs. Gates

p]:text-cms-story-body-color-text clearfix”> As in past statewide races in California, Trump’s outsize political presence will loom large. In the last year, Bonta’s office has filed more than 60 lawsuits against the Trump administration — challenging Trump’s efforts to end birthright citizenship, slash billions in federal funding for California and groups such as Planned Parenthood, halt food assistance for state residents, ban transgender kids’ access to gender-affirming healthcare and school sports, deploy National Guard and other military troops into California cities and unilaterally assess tariffs on global trading partners. Bonta has framed the fight as an existential one for the future of American democracy and rule of law, and cited it as his paramount responsibility when he announced his decision not to run for governor. “In this moment, my place is here, on the front lines, in the trenches, serving as a bulwark, creating a protection around our state and our people, our values and our progress in the face of these vicious, inhumane, unlawful, cruel attacks from the Trump administration,” Bonta said. Days later, Gates announced …

Theaster Gates Gifts David Drake Vessel to Descendants

“It started out as young scholarly curiosity,” the artist Theaster Gates said of his initial interest in the work of the 19th-century enslaved potter David Drake, also known as Dave the Potter. Gates was an undergraduate at Iowa State University in the early ’90s, making ceramics that he said referenced “white Americana craft” from the ’60s, like Peter Voulkos and Rudy Autio. While he admired that work, Gates recalled talking to his professor, Ingrid Lilligren, about the lineage in which he was working, asking, “Are the only named people we know all white guys?” He felt that “there was no precedent for the kind of craft I’m interested in making.” Related Articles But Lilligren pointed him to the school library which held a small catalog discussing Dave the Potter, whose work was just beginning to be recognized more widely. “Dave was a kind of archetype of a Black poet-potter, as a way of developing an apparatus for believing more in myself. I believed more in Dave first: look at him, then look at me,” he …
