One town’s scheme to get rid of its geese

One town’s scheme to get rid of its geese

The need for such conflict resolution is on the rise as land development collides with changes in animal behavior. Though overpopulation of Canada geese is a national nuisance in the US, such tensions also surface with other species in this country and elsewhere, including grizzlies on the Montana prairies, coyotes on San Francisco streets, and savanna elephants in Tanzania parks.  So the people whose job it is to deal with recalcitrant critters are bringing on the gadgets. Back in Foster City, I spot a black camera mounted to a tree trunk at Gull Park by the lagoon. They’re in seven parks around town, programmed to snap photos every 15 minutes and transmit them back to Wildlife Innovations HQ. If they detect geese, a biologist immediately drives over to disperse the birds. One team member uses devices like lasers or drones; another brings along a goose-hating border collie named Rocky.  Belligerent birds must grapple with the Goosinator.ANNIKA HOM As a special measure, staff deploy the “Goosinator,” a small, remote-controlled neon-orange pontoon boat with a fearsome dog-like …

Some Geese Coachella Weekend 2 Thoughts That I Am Reasonably Sure Are My Own

Besides, practically everyone with internet access has weighed in on this already; the best thing written about it is probably the blog post that started the whole conversation at the end of last month, by the singer/songwriter Eliza McLamb, who was really writing about the attention economy and the struggle to game that economy enough to ensure your survival while still remaining present in your life and your art, the daily effort of engaging with what is real while still making the cobras dance. The subsequent Geese-psyop story became a discourse grenade because unlike McLamb’s post it uses the sexy/scary word “psyop” and also because we’re in a global and culturewide crisis of meaning, in which manufactured realities exert pressure on the real world and we’re being manipulated more constantly and efficiently by social media than ever before while also being more conscious than we’ve ever been of that manipulation as it’s taking place. Our ability to perceive any event accurately is under attack, and this is reshaping all our lives so profoundly and so …

The Fanfare Around Geese Actually Was a Psyop

The Fanfare Around Geese Actually Was a Psyop

Brooklyn indie rockers Geese shot to the heights of rock and roll fame at the end of 2025. Their fourth album Getting Killed, was released in late September and dominated the year’s top 10 lists. Their fall tour sold out almost everywhere. The collective buzz earned them slots on Saturday Night Live and at Coachella and made the band (and frontman Cameron Winter, who has his own solo career) something close to a household name—at least in households where polyrhythmic art rock is a topic of conversation. The Guardian’s review of the new record called Geese “the new saviors of rock ’n’ roll.” Their explosion onto the scene, seemingly out of nowhere, led to an inevitable backlash. Haters called them a “psyop.” Some questioned their sudden-seeming rise to superstardom, calling them “an industry plant.” Others, while acknowledging their talent, attributed their fame to savvy marketing. Certainly, when a band blows up so quickly, it can seem inorganic, and a bit weird. When a band moves from the edges of the conversation to smack in the …
