Passage by Colin Thubron review – mortality and memory in a gem of a novel | Books

Virginia Woolf said of Middlemarch that it is one of the few English novels written for grown-up people. In the shallow and infantilising age through which we are living, Colin Thubron dares to assume that his readers are adults. Passage is a very beautiful, very moving, authentic work of art. Hardly more than a novella, it sits lightly in the hand, but its emotional and aesthetic weight overtips the balance. Thubron began his career as a travel writer and a large part of the action of Passage is set in a vividly but economically evoked Egypt. This is not the teeming Egypt of Cairo or Alexandria, but of the countryside, the villages, and the great immemorial tombs and ancient monuments. The best travel writers know that “abroad” is most convincingly evoked not by awed exclamations at the world’s wonders, but by an attitude of relaxed familiarity. Thubron is obviously an old Egypt hand, or at least has the skill to convince us that he is. The story he tells is both simple and subtle. The main character is Kathleen, …

‘Everything you’d want from Italy, all in one place’: Brescia, Lombardy’s hidden gem | Italy holidays

‘Everything you’d want from Italy, all in one place’: Brescia, Lombardy’s hidden gem | Italy holidays

We have hardly begun walking before I spot the side alley, curving away from the main road in a patchwork of sunlit yellow walls, shuttered windows and shadowy archways. “What’s up there?” Elena, my guide to the city, pulls a wry smile. “That is Carmine. As a kid, I was warned not to go there.” I turn up the alley. There’s a lot of graffiti. Next to an anarchy symbol, someone has sprayed “morte al decoro” – death to decorum. I’m intrigued. We go further, finding a labyrinth of colourful streets filled with bars and restaurants, a few just opening up for the day. Like the bohemian quarter at its heart, Brescia is an Italian city that is easily missed: it’s near the Dolomites and Lake Garda, but not close enough to be a base for them. Tourists tend to speed past on their way to Milan or Verona. Fiercely proud of her city, Elena is on a mission to convince me it is worth a stop. “You’ll see. We’ve got everything you’d want from …

The Best Austen Movie Of All Time Is An Underrated Gem On Disney+

The Best Austen Movie Of All Time Is An Underrated Gem On Disney+

If you’re looking for something to fill the void between now and September’s very promising-looking Sense and Sensibility release, it might be time to give an underappreciated Lady Susan adaptation a go. As a committed Austen fan, my top two on-screen period versions have long been the basically-perfect 1995 BBC Pride and Prejudice series and 2016′s Love And Friendship. But while I think a lot of fans are with me on the BBC take, I’ve seen a lot less buzz around Whit Stillman’s masterpiece – despite its 96% Rotten Tomatoes score and multiple awards. Perhaps that’s because the wild late-teens writing it’s based on is rarely read, though that, too, should be rectified IMO.  The Love and Friendship movie is based on Lady Susan. I’m not really sure why it’s got the name; there is a story by Austen called Love and Friendship, but though it also features grasping, scheming women, the movie’s plot is clearly based on the “little-known novella”. Still, the only thing that matters is our Suze. Played by Kate Beckinsale, she’s a ruthless, …

‘Enthralling’ Netflix period drama The Dig hailed as a ‘gem’ by fans – and it’s a true story

‘Enthralling’ Netflix period drama The Dig hailed as a ‘gem’ by fans – and it’s a true story

With the longer hours in the day coming in, the weekend is the perfect time to settle down in front of the sofa and watch incredible dramas that might have initially passed us by. Back in 2021, Netflix released The Dig, a 1930s-set period drama that focused on a real-life archaeological dig in Sutton Hoo, Suffolk, ahead of the start of World War II. The movie itself is based on the 2007 book of the same name by John Preston. A simple synopsis for the movie reads: “An excavator and his team discover a wooden ship from the Dark Ages while digging up a burial ground on a woman’s estate.” Ahead of its release, The Dig attracted controversy over the decision to cast Carey Mulligan as Edith Pretty. At the time of the film’s setting, Edith would have been in her 50s, whereas Carey was in her mid-30s. The character was originally supposed to be played by Nicole Kidman, but she pulled out due to a scheduling conflict, so some were dismayed that an actress …

ITV’s ‘gripping’ 4-part crime drama Chasing Shadows is the ultimate hidden gem – and it can be binged in an evening

A gritty crime drama is one of the best genres out there, and thanks to its popularity, there’s never a shortage of one to tune in for. So if you missed the 2014 series Chasing Shadows, now is the perfect time to indulge yourself. With only four episodes, consisting of two two-part stories, it’s the perfect binge-watch for the weekend, and for fans of the serious tones and character-driven plots of Broadchurch, you will find plenty to like. Despite airing 12 years ago, the series can still be easily watched, as it continues to be available on ITVX, with no expiration date in the offing. The synopsis of the series reads: “DS Sean Stone is intense and socially awkward, a misfit who is happier dealing with data rather than people. His lack of people skills and forthright honesty make him some powerful enemies in the force, and he finds himself exiled to missing persons. WATCH: See the trailer for Chasing Shadows Sean’s new caseload is overwhelming – up to 300,000 people go missing in the …

An Indian food gem flourishes inside this Echo Park convenience store

An Indian food gem flourishes inside this Echo Park convenience store

It’s a spring afternoon in a strip mall in Echo Park. Jasmine is in bloom. Along Sunset Boulevard, bars are crowded with Dodger fans. A man in a Clayton Kershaw jersey steps out of Leo Market carrying a plastic bag filled with homemade curry, chicken tikka and a pack of American Spirits. Inside, Kajari Ghatak stands behind the counter, selling creamy curries and biryani. She may be one of the few people in the neighborhood who has little interest in Shohei Ohtani. And yet, her family-owned convenience store has become an unlikely destination for some of the most sought-after Indian food in the area, which might not be known precisely for great Indian food. “It’s a good neighborhood, and people like us,” she says with a shrug. Kajari and Amat hold containers of chicken curry and biryani that they sell from Leo Market. (Joshua Cullen / For The Times) At the counter, a smiling woman presents Kajari’s husband, Amit Ghatak, with a winning lottery scratcher. “Sorry, we’re out of money,” he says, with a mischievous …

5 largest box office profits in history – including underrated gem made for under $100 million

Heading down to the cinema is an experience in of itself, but sometimes the films that we end up going to see end up becoming box office hits. Others, however, completely bomb upon their release. However, even a popular film that generates plenty of income can be seen as a box office bomb, if it barely makes any money compared to what its budget was. As much as fantasy epics are incredible, sometimes with so many sets needing to be designed, hundreds of extras and extensive computer graphics can end up leaving them not making much profit. But what of the films that have managed to be both box office smashes and recoup their budget. Scroll down to see the five most profit-making films in history, including two from James Cameron… © Alamy Stock Photo The 2009 film has commanded the box office since its release Avatar Given that Avatar is the highest-grossing film in history, it’s perhaps not a surprise to see James Cameron’s sci-fi epic here. Shohei Ohtani Hits Leadoff Homer, Lowers ERA to 0.73 in Another 2-Way Gem for Victorious Dodgers

Shohei Ohtani Hits Leadoff Homer, Lowers ERA to 0.73 in Another 2-Way Gem for Victorious Dodgers

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Shohei Ohtani returned to his full two-way form for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday, and the results were formidable. After launching his eighth homer of the season and then lowering his ERA to a minuscule 0.73, Ohtani took satisfaction in doing it all even on a night when he didn’t feel sharp on the mound. Ohtani said through his interpreter that he had “a lot of uncertainty coming into this outing, because the feel wasn’t great. And so the results were good, but as you saw, the process wasn’t that great. … I have a pretty high standard in terms of performance, so it didn’t really match.” Two-way superstardom is a burden unique to Ohtani, and he hasn’t been shouldering it as effortlessly as usual this season. While his pitching numbers are stellar — his ERA is now the lowest in the majors among pitchers with at least 25 innings of work — he fell into a slump at the plate in April and struggled into May, with his power …

Viewers hail new drama Falling as ‘TV gem’

Channel 4’s new romance drama, Falling, debuted on Tuesday night, and viewers have hailed the show as “brilliant” and a TV “gem”.  Starring Keeley Hawes and Paapa Essiedu, the six-part series explores the forbidden and unexpected romance between a devoted nun and a Catholic priest.  © Channel 4Keeley Hawes stars as a devoted nun in Falling This poignant exploration of forbidden love has rightfully claimed the top spot on my watchlist this week.
