Mashable 101 creator Grace Reiter joins ‘Saturday Night Live’ Season 52

Mashable 101 creator Grace Reiter joins ‘Saturday Night Live’ Season 52

Grace Reiter has built a following by committing to the bit. Now she’s taking that energy to Studio 8H. The comedian, whom we named one of our Mashable 101 creators earlier this year, is joining Saturday Night Live as as a featured player for Season 52. If you’ve seen Reiter on TikTok, you’ve likely laughed at the way she takes a weird thought and runs with it. In one video, she gives her last clean pair of underwear a hope-core edit. In another, she pretends she’s on Love Island, trying to sleep next to two Islanders who are “getting freaky.” Across her videos, Reiter uses physical stunts, body humor, and candid confessions accompanied by a jarringly icy stare. As Haley Henschel wrote in Mashable’s profile, “‘Grace videos’ have practically become their own genre on TikTok” (where she has 3.9 million followers). Reiter told Mashable back in June that her comedy comes from wanting to know whether other people share her strange thoughts and habits. “[My comedy] comes from a place of connection or reassurance,” she …

NASA launches Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope to investigate dark Universe

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has launched on a mission to investigate dark matter, dark energy and the evolution of the Universe. The mission lifted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy at 7:26 am EDT on Sunday, with the observatory now on a three-month journey towards its operating position around the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point (L2), roughly one million miles from Earth. The telescope is designed to investigate some of astronomy’s biggest unanswered questions, particularly the nature of dark matter and dark energy. Its combination of a wide field of view and infrared capabilities will allow scientists to survey enormous areas of the sky while looking deep into the history of the cosmos. The early stages of the mission have proceeded successfully. NASA began receiving telemetry seven minutes after launch, while the telescope separated from the Falcon Heavy 31 minutes into the flight. Roman has also successfully deployed its solar panels and lower instrument sun shade and is now heading towards L2, where it will undergo several …

Today at 7:26 a.m. EDT, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope officially launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center near Cape Canaveral, Florida. The Falcon Heavy’s 27 Merlin engines generated over 5 million pounds of thrust, and pushed the rocket through the atmosphere. It got it’s “first taste of space” about four minutes after liftoff. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope shortly after launch. Once it reaches L2, the new space telescope will be about four times farther from Earth than the moon. Ahead of the launch, NASA also announced the Adopt a Pixel campaign, where users …

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Has a Hidden Technological Leap

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Has a Hidden Technological Leap

Two mirrors, each small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, are set to change how we understand the cosmos. The launch window for NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is about to open. The telescope’s primary instrument is due to inform practically every area of astrophysics, but also tucked inside the telescope is a specialized coronagraph, an experimental apparatus that will attempt to directly capture starlight reflected off a planet’s surface for the first time. It’s an ambitious project that NASA hopes will pave the way for a space telescope that can one day provide a glimpse of an Earthlike planet orbiting a sunlike star. That’s a feat far beyond the power of current engineering—hence taking the basic technique for a spin on Roman. “We’ll test them in space for the first time, and we’ll understand what work still is left to go,” says Vanessa Bailey, an astrophysicist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and instrument scientist for the coronagraph. At its core, a coronagraph is just a science-minded sunshade that can block …

Less than five years after the revolutionary James Webb Space Telescope’s (JWST or Webb) debut, NASA is heading back to the launch pad to deploy another world-class space observatory—the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. Called Roman for short, the space telescope will hunt dark matter, dark energy and exoplanets, as well as providing an unprecedented view of the cosmos to all sorts of astrophysicists. With Webb and the venerable Hubble Space Telescope continuing to gather ever more observations, it’s easy to wonder what another mission will add to the mix. But scientists in the know can’t wait for Roman to really get to work early next year. Its unique capabilities will complement Hubble and Webb while creating its own hugely important legacy—even if …

Nasa’s new telescope is named after astronomer Nancy Grace Roman – but who was she?

Nasa’s new telescope is named after astronomer Nancy Grace Roman – but who was she?

Nasa has named its latest flagship space telescope after the American scientist Nancy Grace Roman. Roman’s contributions to astrophysics should have made her famous, yet many people will never have heard of her. For decades, astronomers have been spoiled with stunning data and imagery from the Hubble Space Telescope, which was launched into Earth orbit in 1990. In 2021, the James Webb space telescope (JWST) was sent into space as Hubble’s successor. Since then, JWST has identified some of the earliest stars and galaxies to form after the Big Bang and has made a host of other amazing discoveries. JWST is designed to look at individual objects in extraordinary detail, but the Roman telescope is designed to survey the sky at scale. By monitoring vast areas of the cosmos, astronomers can piece together a broader picture of how the universe changes. The capabilities of the two telescopes are therefore complementary. The new observatory’s name honours a scientist who battled discrimination in a male-dominated field, eventually becoming Nasa’s first chief astronomer. Roman was born in Nashville, …

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launches on an eye opening mission : NPR

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, named after NASA’s first chief astronomer, will launch on Aug. 30. NASA hide caption toggle caption NASA The universe is a strange place — filled with exploding stars, ancient galaxies, and unseen worlds. Now, astronomers are about to get a brand new tool to explore it. The $4.3-billion Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is scheduled for launch Aug. 30. Named for NASA’s first chief astronomer, the observatory is expected to reveal new information about the expansion of the universe and discover multitudes of planets orbiting distant stars. Roman, as it is known to its friends, has an unusual history. About 15 years ago NASA was making plans to build a space telescope that could, among other things, search for exploding stars known as Type 1A supernovas. These supernovas were used as a kind of cosmological measuring stick to uncover a mysterious force called dark energy that was causing the universe to expand — a discovery that earned the Nobel Prize in 2011. Cosmologist Daniel Scolnic at Duke University says …

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is about to open a vast new window on the universe

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is about to open a vast new window on the universe

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is scheduled to launch Aug. 30 with a field of view at least 100 times larger than Hubble’s, allowing it to survey huge areas of the sky quickly. Roman will investigate dark energy and dark matter while mapping hundreds of millions of galaxies and revealing new details about how the universe evolved. The observatory will also search for planets throughout the Milky Way, with researchers expecting its surveys to uncover around 100,000 transiting worlds and more than 1,000 through microlensing. A space telescope built to see the universe on an enormous scale is almost ready to leave Earth. NASA and SpaceX are targeting no earlier than 7:26 a.m. EDT Sunday, Aug. 30, for the launch of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope aboard a Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. NASA completed its flight readiness review and enclosed the observatory inside its rocket fairing ahead of launch. Roman combines sharp infrared vision with a field of view at least 100 times larger than Hubble’s. That combination …
