Police make major breakthrough after gran ‘stabbed to death with fork’ | UK | News

Police have made a major breakthough in the case of a woman who was stabbed to death 32 years ago. Four people have now been arrested in connection with the death of 64-year-old Doreen Morris, who was found dead in her burned-out bungalow on the outskirts of Holyhead in March 1994. Mrs Morris was stabbed to death with a fork after disturbing a burglary at her Anglesey home, Penrhyn Uchaf, a 2023 inquest found. North Wales Police said forensic developments and a detailed review of witness evidence had led to the arrests of a man and three women from North Wales on Wednesday morning (September 2). All four were arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice as part of an ongoing review of the case. Mrs Morris’ family have been informed of the latest development. Joseph Carl Westbury was found not guilty of murdering Mrs Morris in 1995. He also denied breaking into her property on Mill Lane. Mr Westbury took his own life in May 2016. The North Wales Police Major Crime …

Wirral mum’s loved ones say ‘let’s get her home to her babies’ after Gran Canaria coma

The loved ones of a mum in a coma in the Canary Islands have urged her to wake up so she can get back home to her children. Emily Casey, 34 and of Rock Ferry, was taken ill just three days after she had flown out to Gran Canaria with her husband Jamie Casey and their five children. Emily, who had recently recovered from pneumonia, had struggled to breathe and was rushed to hospital where an emergency CT scan was done. They were told the pneumonia had returned and one of her lungs was “full of fluid”, which would need to be drained. Jamie returned to the family’s hotel with the children, but when he returned to hospital the following day he devastatingly found his wife was in an induced coma on a life support machine. After taking the children back to England he returned to the Spanish island but was told on Saturday how his wife’s progress had “gone backwards”. Scans revealed pneumonia has “taken over her lungs again” and sepsis is now in …

Man packed suitcase and fled Gran Canaria after ex-partner’s actions on first night

A man “had to flee” Gran Canaria after his ex-girlfriend battered him on the first night of their ill-fated holiday. Alisha Lloyd bit and repeatedly punched her former partner after he took exception to her speaking to another male during a drinking session on the Spanish island, their relationship having ended around two weeks prior to the trip abroad. The teenager was even said to have ripped part of her estranged boyfriend’s t-shirt off with her teeth during the prolonged assault and had him turfed out of their hotel when she wrongly told security staff she had been the victim. Being left “scared for his safety”, he then packed his bags and flew home “to get away from her”. Liverpool Crown Court heard yesterday, Wednesday, that Lloyd, of Byron Close in Huyton, had been in a relationship with Calum Wignall between February and June of last year. Prior to their split, the couple had booked a 10-day holiday to Gran Canaria and decided to continue with their travel plans together. Matthew Dixon, prosecuting, described how …

Contributor: What Clint Eastwood’s ‘Gran Torino’ got right — and what America refused to learn

There was a deep chill in the air the day President Trump said he’d consider invoking the Insurrection Act after a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent fatally shot Renee Good in south Minneapolis. Something came to mind: Inhumanity follows atrocities as the “jackal follows the wounded beast.” That dictum feels newly relevant amid the popular refrain from Trump’s critics that the cruelty is the point. I grew up in north Minneapolis, in a neighborhood abutting Olson Memorial Highway, the main road that came to define this working-class, mostly nonwhite part of the city. Many Hmong American families, including my own, have called the area home for decades. The Twin Cities have become almost interchangeable with Hmong America. Things were different for us here. This seemingly provincial Midwestern metro area was a beacon of cosmopolitanism. Indeed, Olson Memorial Highway wasn’t merely a road or a geographic marker. It was a symbolic one. Here, different corners of the world converged — along with their histories, peoples and cultures — leading toward a multiculturalism in the Midwest …

‘Butterfly’ Is a Rotterdam Film With Renate Reinsve, Gran Canaria

How is this elevator pitch? The film’s title is Butterfly, its setting is Gran Canaria, and its ensemble cast includes none other than best actress Oscar nominee and Sentimental Value star Renate Reinsve. If you’re not sold yet, let us mention this plot outline: Two very different and estranged half sisters, laughable performance artist Lily and the much more quiet and restrained Diana, are forced to reunite in their childhood home in Gran Canaria after their parents’ deaths, only to inherit an unfinished resort and an esoteric retreat. After all, their uninhibited mother, Vera, worked as a hostess at the resort. The second feature from Norwegian writer-director Itonje Søimer Guttormsen (Gritt) just world premiered in the Big Screen Competition of the 55th edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR). Reinsve’s The Worst Person in the World co-star Helene Bjørneby, Numan Acar, and Lillian Müller also star. For Søimer Guttormsen, it marks a return to IFFR five years after her fiction debut screened in its Tiger Competition. Protagonist Pictures is handling sales on the movie from Mer Film, Quiddity Films, Zentropa International …
