Meet One Foot in the Grave star Annette Crosbie’s TV star daughter

One of the biggest sitcoms of the 1990s was the BBC’s One Foot in the Grave, which focused on the exploits of early retiree Victor Meldrew, played by Richard Wilson. While the show focused on Victor’s antics, one of the most beloved characters from the sitcom was his long-suffering wife, Margaret, played by Annette Crosbie. Margaret often served as her husband’s comic foil, before becoming a more complex character. Annette, now aged 92, starred in the show for ten years, appearing in all six of the show’s seasons, as well as its special episodes. However, the star also appeared in the likes of The Pope Must Die, Calendar Girls and Into the Woods. However, her most successful roles were in The Six Wives of Henry VIII, where she played Catherine of Aragon, and Edward the Seventh, where she portrayed Queen Victoria. Both of these roles saw the star win BAFTA Awards for Best Actress. Away from her career, Annette initially found love with Michael Griffiths, with the pair marrying in 1966 and welcoming two children. …

Fury Erupts as Val Kilmer’s Estate Announces Starring Role in AI Film Made From Beyond the Grave

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Hollywood actors have been ringing the alarm bells over an industry that’s seemingly hellbent on replacing them with AI. And the general public appears to be on their side. Last year, a talent studio drew enormous and near-universal backlash after announcing the creation of an AI-generated “actress.” Even recently deceased Hollywood movie stars are fair game. During an ongoing industry trade show in Las Vegas, filmmakers behind an upcoming indie film featuring an AI-rendered version of iconic actor Val Kilmer, who’s set to take a prominent role in the film — despite having died from cancer at the age of 65 last year. Kilmer was initially cast as a Catholic priest and Native American spiritualist before his death, as Variety reports, but was too sick to be part of the movie. His estate stepped in, allowing the filmmakers to use generative AI to wrap up production of the film, which features the extraordinarily on-the-nose title of “As Deep …

Val Kilmer’s AI-Generated Likeness Leads As Deep as the Grave Trailer

Val Kilmer‘s AI-generated likeness is front and center in the trailer for the forthcoming movie As Deep as the Grave. Writer-director Coerte Voorhees’ feature debuted the footage at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Wednesday. Abigail Lawrie, Tom Felton and Abigail Breslin round out the cast for the indie film. As Deep as the Grave centers on real-life archaeologists Ann (Lawrie) and Earl Morris (Felton), who unearthed remains of the Ancestral Puebloans in the 1920s. Kilmer’s likeness can be seen portraying Father Fintan, a Catholic priest and Native American spiritualist. “Don’t fear the dead, and don’t fear me,” his likeness says in the trailer. The Top Gun and Batman Forever actor, who died in April 2025 at age 65 after a long battle with throat cancer, had been cast in the film before he passed but was not well enough to shoot his scenes. As noted in a release from production company First Line Films, Voorhees opted to digitally create Kilmer’s performance with the support of the late star’s daughter, Mercedes Kilmer. “When Val came onboard …

German researchers set right the story of a 9,000-year-old shaman’s grave : NPR

When a 9,000 year-old grave of a shaman was discovered in Nazi Germany, the discovery was quickly politicized to support Nazi propaganda. But new analysis shows that initial narrative was all wrong. ROB SCHMITZ, HOST: This next story has Nazis. It’s got an archaeological dig. (SOUNDBITE OF FILM, “INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE”) HARRISON FORD: (As Indiana Jones) That belongs in a museum. SCHMITZ: And no, it’s not about “Indiana Jones.” It actually predates the Ark of the Covenant by thousands of years. And bonus, there’s a shaman involved. We start our quest in the eastern German city of Halle… UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #1: (Speaking German). SCHMITZ: …Where a tram takes me to the steps of the State Museum of Prehistory. Above its massive wooden doors, carved into the castle-like facade are the words unserer vorzeit, our distant past. (Speaking German). UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #2: (Speaking German). Iran poses ‘grave’ threat to UK, police warn after arson attack | UK News

Police are investigating whether an Islamist group with possible links to Iran is behind an arson attack on a Jewish ambulance service in north London. Four ambulances were destroyed in the blaze following a “loud explosion” that erupted at 1.40am on Monday at the base for volunteer group Hatzola in Golders Green. Metropolitan Police said CCTV footage showed three hooded individuals pouring accelerant on the parked vehicles, with investigators analysing hours of footage to identify the suspects. Image: Four ambulances were torched Is Iran behind the attack? Islamist group Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia (HAYI) has claimed responsibility online for the attack, which is so far being treated as an antisemitic hate crime rather than a terror attack. It is a newly formed group believed to be aligned with Iran and appears to have posted a video on Telegram showing a map of the location of the attack and the ambulances on fire. The Met said detectives were aware of the claim of responsibility and were working to determine its authenticity. Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said …

Ian Huntley is dead. Let’s not dance on his grave.

Ian Huntley is dead. Let’s not dance on his grave.

In his and the girls’ home town of Soham, no one wants to talk about his death, not even the vicar, not the girls’ parents. Fair enough; there is dignity in silent grief and the girls’ murders scarred a whole community. But there seems to be resentment at having to provide a funeral service for Ian Huntley; The Sun reports, in a spirit of grievance, that taxpayers may have to pay the £3,000 cost for a service and cremation if his family does not do so. Will there be coverage of the event, to make sure that no clergy officiate on the day, that his funeral is as soulless as possible? I say, if it is his mother’s wish, certainly he should have a Christian service. For in Christian terms, he has gone to the God who made us all, and hates nothing that he has made. Source link

Iron Age mass grave reveals targeted violence against women and children

Iron Age mass grave reveals targeted violence against women and children

Bones lay tightly packed inside what had once been a semi-subterranean house, along with bronze ornaments, pottery vessels, and the butchered remains of animals. The scene was not chaotic. It was arranged. Archaeologists studying the Early Iron Age site of Gomolava in northern Serbia now say the burial represents one of the largest prehistoric mass killings in Europe, and one that appears to have deliberately targeted women and children. Their findings, published in Nature Human Behaviour, challenge long-held assumptions about how violence operated in prehistoric societies. The grave contained the remains of at least 77 people buried around 2,800 years ago. Most were female, and more than half were children. “When we encounter mass graves from prehistory with this kind of demographic, we might expect they were families from a village that was attacked,” said co-lead Associate Professor Barry Molloy of University College Dublin’s School of Archaeology. “Gomolava genuinely took us by surprise when our genetic analysis showed the majority of people studied were not only unrelated, not even their great–great-grandparents were.” Map showing the …

King’s statement on former Prince Andrew’s arrest shows how grave this crisis is for U.K. royals

LONDON — King Charles III does not usually sign his name on statements about his brother. Thursday was different. The king’s response to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest — quick, personal and directly addressing the British public — telegraphed just how serious this crisis is for Britain’s 1,000-year-old royal family. Charles said there must be a “full, fair and proper” investigation into Mountbatten-Windsor, who has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in a public office in relation to his friendship with the late convicted sex offender and financier Jeffrey Epstein. “Let me state clearly: the law must take its course,” Charles said, adding that the investigation would have “our full and wholehearted support and co-operation.” Meanwhile, he added, “my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all.
