Pressure grows on California attorney general to try to block Paramount’s deal for Warner Bros.

Pressure grows on California attorney general to try to block Paramount’s deal for Warner Bros.

California Democrats in Congress are raising concerns about Paramount Skydance’s proposed takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery — a $111-billion deal that would dramatically reshape Hollywood by consolidating two historic film studios. Rep. Laura Friedman (D-Glendale) and 33 other members of Congress on Thursday urged California Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta to scrutinize potential antitrust harms that would come from billionaire David Ellison’s proposed takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery — and possibly bring a legal challenge. The lawmakers’ campaign comes after more than 4,000 entertainment industry workers, including Jane Fonda, Ben Stiller and J.J. Abrams, signed an open letter calling for the deal to be blocked. “We remain concerned that the proposed merger could harm California workers and consumers,” the 34 lawmakers wrote in their letter to Bonta. “We therefore respectfully urge you to closely analyze the potential effects of this merger, and, if you determine that this merger would have anticompetitive effects, use your best judgment to pursue the appropriate course of action.” The deal, the largest Hollywood merger in nearly a decade, would bring together …

Amputee football grows in Rwanda, fostering unity and resilience | Football News

Published On 6 May 20266 May 2026 The players struck their crutches against each other as they chase a football, as well as a larger dream of competing at the global level. Children shriek with joy as they watch a goalkeeper dive to block an attempt with her remaining hand. Amputee football, a seven-a-side version of the game in which players roam the field on crutches and goalkeepers have one arm, has grown steadily in Rwanda over the past decade. Players say they have found a community on the field after embracing a sport some never imagined they could play. For many, it offers not only physical rehabilitation but also a sense of belonging. In the capital Kigali, amputees play to foster healing and social cohesion after traumas that include the country’s darkest period: the 1994 genocide, in which about 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were massacred by the majority Hutu population over a 100-day period. Nyiraneza Solange was born two years after the genocide and lost her leg at the age of five after falling …

UK rallies multinational force of navies as threat from Russia grows | UK News

The UK is rallying a new multinational force of navies from among northern allies to be ready to fight and defend their seas amid a growing threat from Russia, the head of the Royal Navy has said. Naval chiefs from across northern Europe signed a “statement of intent” to work up the details for the “Northern Navies Initiative” following a meeting last week, General Sir Gwyn Jenkins revealed. He said the grouping would complement NATO, with the advantage of being able to react potentially more quickly in a crisis than the larger alliance. “We know we have no time to lose, which is why by the end of this year, I want us all to have signed a formal declaration, laying the foundations for what will be a vital and enduring partnership for many years to come,” the First Sea Lord said in a lecture at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) think tank. “I aim to create a maritime force that trains, exercises and prepares together. A force designed to fight immediately if required, …

Berlin deepens military ties with Washington while Merz-Trump rift grows

Berlin deepens military ties with Washington while Merz-Trump rift grows

BERLIN — Germany is embedding a senior U.S. officer deep into its military command structures in a sign of close cooperation that comes despite worsening political ties. Starting in October, an American colonel will serve at the German Army Command in a key role as deputy head of the Operations Division, where missions are planned and decisions are prepared, the German army and the Pentagon told POLITICO. This places a U.S. officer in close cooperation with German counterparts at the center of Germany’s land forces. The aim, a German army spokesperson said, is “to further deepen German-American cooperation and optimize joint operational capability within NATO.” There is a tradition of exchange programs with foreign officers in the Bundeswehr, but such deep integration into core command structures is unusual — and comes at a moment where relations between U.S. President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz are publicly fraying. The U.S. does send officers to work with allied militaries, and allied officers frequently serve as deputies to senior commanders in American units. Such officers serve …

Audio streaming giant Spotify posted a first-quarter revenue gain and ended March with 293 million paying premium subscribers, up from 290 million as of the end of 2025. Monthly active users (MAUs) grew to 761 million from 751 million. Management had previously forecast 293 million premium subs and 759 million MAUs. Operating income hit at a record €715 million in the first quarter. Profitability has returned to the investor spotlight after price increases and cost cuts. Participation in EMA’s demand response scheme grows as firms curb peak electricity use

Participation in EMA’s demand response scheme grows as firms curb peak electricity use

SINGAPORE: More energy-intensive firms in Singapore are cutting their power use during peak periods, as part of a scheme that rewards them for doing so when demand and prices are high. The Energy Market Authority (EMA) said participation in its demand response programme has grown from four businesses in 2023 to 16 this year. The number of service providers – which act as intermediaries between the power grid and businesses – has also doubled from three to six.  The scheme allows companies with heavy energy needs – such as manufacturers – to reduce electricity use when the grid is under stress. In return, they receive payments for reducing usage during these periods. Electricity consumption cuts under the programme have reached 167 megawatts (MW) – enough to power about 300,000 four-room HDB flats for an hour. HOW THE PROGRAMME WORKS Demand response is designed to ease pressure on the power grid and can result in more stable electricity prices, says the EMA. Firms can sign up via electricity retailers or aggregators. Those who can offer to reduce …

Backlash grows against police in Nancy Guthrie case after suspension revelation

Backlash has been steadily building against the lead investigator in the case of Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance on February 1, with Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos coming under fire for past disciplinary issues as the investigation approaches its 12th week.  The sheriff’s history at the El Paso Police Department in Texas has drawn criticism as he resigned from his position in 1982 in order to avoid disciplinary action. He addressed the allegations that he misrepresented himself when applying for a job at the Pima County Police Department in the ’80s, after leaving his job in Texas. Chris’ lawyer responded to the probe into his past with a 22-page document that explained his conduct. “Sheriff Nanos resigned from the El Paso Police Department in 1982. At the time of his resignation, he held the rank of corporal,” the document read.  © Getty ImagesSheriff Chris Nanos has come under fire in recent weeks “His resignation came in the wake of a dispute with a supervisor over the towing of vehicles. Concern Grows That AI Is Damaging Users’ Cognitive Abilities

Concern Grows That AI Is Damaging Users’ Cognitive Abilities

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Last year, a team of researchers led by MIT research scientist Nataliya Kosmyna used electroencephalograms to monitor the brains of students while they were writing short, deliberately open-ended essays. They split the 54 participants into three groups: one was told to use ChatGPT, one could search for information on Google (minus AI-generated summaries), and another had to rely on their own knowledge. As detailed in a resulting yet-to-be-peer-reviewed paper, each group was tasked with writing one essay per month for three months, while a subset of each group was asked to switch to or away from using ChatGPT for a fourth month. The researchers’ EEG findings were ominous: the students using ChatGPT “consistently underperformed at neural, linguistic, and behavioral levels,” they found, and even got lazier with each consecutive essay. “The brain didn’t fall asleep, but there was much less activation in the areas corresponding to creativity and to processing information,” Kosmyna told the BBC in an interview …
