The fashion industry legend posted the black and white shot, which was taken by photographer Nick Knight in 2014, on her social media account earlier this month, to celebrate “all those who continue to nurture, support, love & protect children (close to home & across the world) in every way, shape & form”. The photo has since been reinstated on the platform, albeit with a warning that the post “contains content that some people may find upsetting”. The image shows a naked O’Connor with one hand resting on her pregnant belly, and was captured …

New guidelines warn Americans need to start taking cholesterol levels seriously in their 30s

Get the Well Enough newsletter with Harry Bullmore for tips on living a healthier, happier and longer life Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Americans as young as 30 should be taking action on their cholesterol, according to updated guidelines from the country’s leading cardiologists. An estimated 25 percent of American adults have high levels of the fat-like substance, LDL cholesterol, which raises the chance they will develop heart disease – the cause of 900,000 deaths in the U.S. each year. High levels can also lead to other life-threatening issues like heart attack or stroke. The guidelines, updated every 5-8 years by the American College of Cardiology, aim to reduce heart disease deaths – the fourth highest in the world per capita – and help Americans live longer. The recommendations were last updated in 2018. People should have cholesterol screening at younger ages, the doctors wrote. They also recommended that more people take cholesterol-lowering medication as only about half the individuals eligible are currently doing …

10-cent beverage deposit: F&B outlets get clearer guidelines, supermarkets to add charge at checkout

10-cent beverage deposit: F&B outlets get clearer guidelines, supermarkets to add charge at checkout

From Apr 1, containers bearing the mark can be returned at more than 1,000 reverse vending machines across Singapore. The number of return points will double within the first year. Cans without the deposit mark cannot be returned through these machines. Refunds will be credited to EZ-Link cards, concession cards or DBS PayLah! wallets. The scheme operates under the Extended Producer Responsibility framework, requiring producers to take responsibility for the beverage containers they bring to market and ensure they are collected and recycled. Under the scheme, 16,000 tonnes of material is expected to be recovered for recycling every year, Dr Puthucheary said. He added that the scheme will launch with the name “Return Right”. “Through Return Right, we hope that Singaporeans will also become more mindful of the packaging they consume, dispose of waste properly to keep our shared spaces clean and practise good recycling habits, which will reduce the contamination in our blue recycling bins,” he added. How ESA’s Design for Demise guidelines will mitigate space debris

How ESA’s Design for Demise guidelines will mitigate space debris

The European Space Agency has released its Design for Demise guidelines – a vital step towards achieving zero debris. The Design for Demise guidelines serve as the technical backbone for engineers tasked with ensuring that when a satellite returns to Earth, it leaves nothing behind but a streak of light in the sky. By February 2021, more than 6,000 launches had placed more than 45,000 metric tonnes of debris into orbit, posing significant risks to life on Earth through atmospheric re-entry. Re-entry events have become more common in recent years due to the increase in the number of satellites in LEO. Therefore, Design for Demise aims to reduce the risk of casualties on Earth and enable compliance with global efforts to mitigate those risks. Concerns are growing over re-entry and public safety For decades, the standard procedure for satellites in Low Earth Orbit was to let them naturally decay and burn up in the atmosphere. However, as satellites grew larger and utilised more heat-resistant materials (like titanium and ceramics), many components survived the intense heat …

Police media guidelines updated to lift post-Leveson chill

Police media guidelines updated to lift post-Leveson chill

A member of the police gives an interview to a local radio journalist near where a Royal Navy jet came down around on 25 March 25 2021 in woods near Helston, England. Picture: Hugh Hastings/Getty Images Crime reporters have welcomed updated police media guidelines for England and Wales which could draw to a close 15 years of frosty relations between officers and journalists. Since the Leveson Inquiry in 2011 police have tended to see journalists as a corruption risk. For three years to 2025 the College of Policing bracketed journalists with criminals as individuals with whom staff had to disclose any association. A number of UK journalists have been arrested and detained whilst trying to cover protests in recent years. And police refusal to provide off-the-record guidance to the media fuelled a wave of misinformation during the disappearance of Nicola Bulley in Lancashire in 2023 and following the murder of three children by a man with a knife in Southport in 2024. The new standards for communications from the College of Policing encourage police officers to interact …

California Planning To Sue Trump Admin Over Revised Child Vaccine Guidelines

California Planning To Sue Trump Admin Over Revised Child Vaccine Guidelines

Authored by Aldgra Fredly via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours), California Attorney General Rob Bonta said on Feb. 17 that the state plans to take legal action against the Trump administration over the recent modifications to the childhood vaccine schedule. A man holds his 14-month-old son while he gets the MMR vaccine at a clinic in Lubbock, Texas, on March 1, 2025. Jan Sonnenmair/Getty Images The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Jan. 5, with backing from Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., narrowed the number of vaccines routinely recommended by the childhood schedule. Bonta told Reuters in an interview that he has mobilized his team to identify the necessary details for a possible complaint against the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), including jurisdictional and legal grounds for pursuing the lawsuit. “I like the facts. I like science. I don’t want to give any airtime to his—I mean, just conspiracy [expletive],” Bonta told the news agency, referring to Kennedy’s stance on vaccines. Bonta did not specify when the state might file …

US deputy health secretary: Vaccine guidelines are still subject to change

US deputy health secretary: Vaccine guidelines are still subject to change

As deputy secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, O’Neill assumes a level of responsibility for huge and influential science and health agencies, including the National Institutes of Health (the world’s largest public funder of biomedical research) and the Food and Drug Administration (which oversees drug regulation and is globally influential) as well as the CDC. Today, he said, he sees support for longevity science from his colleagues within HHS. “If I could describe one common theme to the senior leadership at HHS, obviously it’s to make America healthy again, and reversing aging damage is all about making people healthy again,” he said. “We are refocusing HHS on addressing and reversing chronic disease, and chronic diseases are what drive aging, broadly.” Over the last year, thousands of NIH grants worth over $2 billion were frozen or terminated, including funds for research on cancer biology, health disparities, neuroscience, and much more. When asked whether any of that funding will be restored, he did not directly address the question, instead noting: “You’ll see a lot …

The New U.S. Dietary Guidelines’ Stand on Added Sugar

The New U.S. Dietary Guidelines’ Stand on Added Sugar

For years, sugar has been quietly overlooked within the U.S. federal nutrition guidelines. While fat and carbohydrates have had their time in the spotlight in previous guidelines, sugar itself has often been viewed as a small indulgence instead of a true health concern. Recent changes to the federal nutrition guidelines suggest that the hands-off approach with sugar may finally be coming to an end. New U.S. Dietary Guidelines The United States publishes the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) every five years. These guidelines have historically been established by the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. The new DGA for the years 2025-2030 focuses on the overall message of “eating real food.” By shifting to a stronger emphasis on limiting added sugar intake in the diet, this marks a pivotal shift in the guidelines that drive American nutrition. The DGA extends beyond individual nutrition choices and helps shape nutrition policies and public health efforts nationwide. Whenever these nutrition standards change, they influence what types of foods are being served in institutions that feed millions of Americans on a …

Grant guidelines for libraries and museums take “chilling” political turn under Trump

Grant guidelines for libraries and museums take “chilling” political turn under Trump

A library in rural Alaska needed help providing free Wi-Fi and getting kids to read. A children’s museum in Washington wanted to expand its Little Science Lab. And a World War I museum in Missouri had a raft of historic documents it needed to digitize. They received funding from a little-known federal agency before the Trump administration unsuccessfully tried to dismantle it last year. The Institute of Museum and Library Services is now accepting applications for its 2026 grant cycle. But this time, it has unusually specific criteria. In cover letters accompanying the applications, the institute said it “particularly welcomes” projects that align with President Donald Trump’s vision for America. These would include those that foster an appreciation for the country “through uplifting and positive narratives,” the agency writes, citing an executive order that attacks the Smithsonian Institution for its “divisive, race-centered ideology.” (Trump has said the museum focused too much on “how bad slavery was.”) The agency also points to an executive order calling for the end of “the anti-Christian weaponization of government” and …
