Thieves who were caught by UK police officers trying to tunnel their way into a jewellery shop have pleaded guilty, after an investigation linked the organised crime group to a series of burglaries worth more than £700,000. Metropolitan Police officers swooped after receiving reports of a suspected burglary on Mitcham Road in Tooting, south London, at 3.12am on July 17. Body-worn footage captured emergency response officers arriving at the scene within minutes, where Laurentiu-Daniel Nitisoara, 38, was arrested in a nearby alleyway. Officers then searched the surrounding area and tracked down a second suspect, Ioan Asafeti, 39, who was found hiding on a rooftop and arrested. Police subsequently searched a massage parlour the pair had broken into and discovered they had been attempting to tunnel through a wall into the neighbouring jewellery shop. Bags containing tools and equipment being used to dig the hole were also discovered inside. A third member of the group, Sergiu Plastin, 42, of Portadown, Craigavon, was arrested later that day.
