All hail Amy Poehler, queen of podcasting goodness

All hail Amy Poehler, queen of podcasting goodness

Amy Poehler is that fun, easygoing friend who’s somehow good at everything she does. With the launch of the Good Hang podcast, the 54-year-old Parks and Recreation star has quickly amassed a devoted audience that continues to climb. After releasing the first episode in March of 2025, Good Hang has racked up 709,000 subscribers on YouTube, 2 million on Instagram, and 757,300 on TikTok. Plus, it won the inaugural award for Best Podcast at the Golden Globes. The format of each 60(ish)-minute episode is pretty straightforward: Poehler has a sit-down chat in a question-and-answer style that’s at once engaging and delightful. But the power of its success lies with Poehler herself. She is so enjoyable to watch (or listen to, depending on where you get your podcasts) and clearly loves learning about what lights people up. Mashable Trend Report In its first 52 weeks on the internet, the podcast has featured a parade of convivial, high-profile guests, including Michelle Obama, Ryan Coogler, and Gwyneth Paltrow, plus a steady stable of Poehler’s former co-stars and collaborators. …

‘A landmark’: Brazil’s prosecutors hail court ruling to preserve Fordlandia | History News

Federal prosecutors in Brazil have celebrated a court decision mandating the preservation of Fordlandia, a 1928 city built by the United States industrialist Henry Ford in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. The court ruling was the result of decades of advocacy, as historians, activists and residents pushed for the crumbling site to be protected. Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list Some hope the site can ultimately be restored and used to anchor the local tourism industry in the Brazilian state of Para. In a statement on Friday, the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office called the court ruling a “landmark” decision that will rectify a gap in Brazil’s cultural preservation efforts. “The complex has suffered from neglect for decades,” the office wrote. “The ruling acknowledges the arguments presented by the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office in the case, highlighting the historical omission by public authorities.” The decision requires the federal government, the state of Para, the local government in Aveiro and the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN) to collaborate to protect the …

All Hail the Military | Military

All Hail the Military | Military

For decades, much of the research on war-related trauma has focused on soldiers, and comparatively less attention has been given to civilians and the long-term impacts of war on local communities. However, new research suggests a striking insight: War trauma may not be confined to the mind but can also leave traces in the body, even at a genetic level. Studies suggest that extreme stress, such as surviving bombings, can influence how genes behave through the body’s chemical “switches” that can turn certain genes on or off without altering the DNA sequence itself. This has led researchers to ask whether the effects of trauma might extend beyond those who directly experience war and whether, in some cases, these biological changes could also be observed in future generations. Another early finding is that being exposed to war as a child may speed up the ageing process, bringing its effects earlier in life and, in some cases, making them more severe. The true cost of war extends beyond the battlefield and the headlines. It lingers in the …

Lawsuits accuse State Farm of secretly working to cut insurance payouts for hail damage : NPR

A support scientist looks at radar on his phone while tracking a supercell thunderstorm in Oklahoma. Hail damage contributed to $51 billion in insured losses last year from severe storms, according to the Insurance Information Institute, an industry-backed think tank. Drew Angerer/Getty Images hide caption toggle caption Drew Angerer/Getty Images The storm swept into Tulsa County, Okla., around dinnertime on May 21, 2024, hammering people’s houses with hail the size of golf balls. It was so loud that when a neighbor called Tim Willard, he couldn’t make out what they were saying on the phone. Afterward, Willard walked outside his home to see shingles ripped from the roof and a lawn covered by an inch of ice. “These were jagged hailstones,” Willard says. “They were coming just straight down and just peppered everything.” Weeks later, Willard claims that an adjuster for State Farm, his home insurer, said his roof should be replaced. But that same day, State Farm reversed itself and denied Willard’s insurance claim. Soon after, State Farm canceled Willard’s coverage, leaving him with …

Palestinian officials hail local elections in a Gaza community and the West Bank : NPR

A Palestinian man votes in local elections, the first in two decades in Gaza and the first in the occupied West Bank since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in Al-Ubaidiya, West Bank, Saturday, April 25, 2026. Mahmoud Illean/AP hide caption toggle caption Mahmoud Illean/AP JERUSALEM — Palestinian authorities said Sunday that local elections in a single Gaza community and the Israeli-occupied West Bank were a success and called them a step toward a long-delayed presidential election in the territories and eventual statehood. The Palestinian Authority, which administers semiautonomous areas of the West Bank but is left out of the U.S.-drafted ceasefire plan for Gaza, has described Saturday’s local election in central Gaza’s Deir al-Balah as a largely symbolic pilot while the authority seeks to politically link the territories. It was the first election in part of Hamas-run Gaza in more than two decades. Deir al-Balah, like much of the territory, is devastated by two years of war but was spared an Israeli ground invasion. Turnout there was 23%, but officials cited challenges including large-scale …

Project Hail Mary delays streaming release after record-breaking box office run

After enjoying huge success at the box office and a wave of very positive reviews, Project Hail Mary has had its streaming premiere date pushed back so the film can enjoy an extended theatrical run. The film – which stars Ryan Gosling and is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller – is currently the third-highest grossing release of 2026 globally, behind only The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Chinese film Pegasus 3. Meanwhile, it has also become Amazon MGM Studios highest-grossing release of all time, so there’s perhaps no surprise that the studio is keen to further maximise its success. The stunning physics of Project Hail Mary go back to ancient China

Ryan Gosling stars as Ryland Grace in Project Hail Mary Jonathan Olley / Amazon Content Services LLC Part-way through watching Project Hail Mary in a full IMAX theatre, I let out a solitary gasp. Wondering why nobody else was shocked about what I had just seen, I realised it was because I am a physicist. Let me explain, with an extremely mild spoiler: there’s a scene in the middle of the film where the Hail Mary spaceship suddenly lurches forward. Ryan Gosling’s character, Ryland Grace, is not strapped into his seat and his head smacks sideways into the screens in front of him. If this had been real, he would have certainly died. Of course, I see films all the time where people get thrown around and punched in the face and dropped from heights that would shatter their bodies, but they survive. Usually, I am able to suspend disbelief. What made this viewing experience different was the careful attention to getting the science of motion in outer space right. Instead of asking their science …
