It’s hot! It’s been hot and it feels like maybe it’ll be hot forever. Along with the deaths of American treasure Dolly Parton and the chameleonic English actor Tim Curry, this heat is really making it feel like we’re in hell. Temperatures all across the Greater L.A. area have hovered above 90 degrees for the last week. In parts of the valleys, they reached north of 100 several times. To make matters worse, the heat has been paired with an uncommon amount of humidity — thanks, in part, to El Niño increasing ocean temperatures. This ridiculous heatwave is unfortunately our new reality, which is perfectly encapsulated by this Simpsons meme I’ve seen passed around the internet over the last few years. Households across the UK are being urged to prepare seven emergency items as multiple weather warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms are in force. Two separate yellow warnings for thunderstorms have been issued by the Met Office across England and Wales on Thursday and Friday, with households urged to brace for possible flash flooding and power cuts. Warnings are already in place in much of England and Wales, across 73 areas including London, Manchester, Nottingham, York, Liverpool and Leeds, and from 5pm on Thursday another 14 areas will be hit with another yellow warning for thunderstorms and possible flooding, including Hull, Norwich and Dover. Households in the warning areas are being urged to prepare for the unsettled weather by putting together a flood plan and an emergency flood kit, which includes seven essential items. These items include basic supplies like torches and batteries, key documents and phone numbers, as well as water, food and medication. Germany registered around 14,000 heat-related deaths this summer as Europe struggled through a series of punishing heatwaves, worse than a previous record high in 2018, official data showed Thursday. France has endured record-breaking successions of heatwaves this summer, which have led to massive wildfires and a spike in the normal death rate, according to French public health services.
