Inflation surges to highest in nearly two years : NPR

Gasoline prices jumped more than a dollar a gallon in March, pushing inflation higher. Joe Raedle/Getty Images hide caption toggle caption Joe Raedle/Getty Images The U.S. war with Iran and the resulting spike in energy prices have pushed inflation to its highest level in nearly two years. A report from the Labor Department Friday showed consumer prices in March were up 3.3% from a year ago. That’s the biggest annual increase since May of 2024. Prices jumped 0.9% between February and March, with higher gasoline prices accounting for nearly three-quarters of that increase. Gas prices have jumped by more than a dollar a gallon, on average, since the U.S. and Israel launched their attack on Iran. Pump prices have remained high this week, despite a tentative ceasefire. Higher jet fuel prices also contributed to a jump in the cost of airline tickets last month, although food prices were flat, as rising costs for restaurant meals offset a decline in grocery prices. Excluding volatile food and energy prices, so-called “core” inflation was 2.6% in March. Inflation …

Stellar 3Y Auction: 2nd Most Foreign Buyers On Record, Highest Stop Through Since Feb 2025

Stellar 3Y Auction: 2nd Most Foreign Buyers On Record, Highest Stop Through Since Feb 2025

After several weeks of decidedly ugly auction which saw a notable drop in foreign demand amid what we reported a week ago was rampant selling of US debt by foreign central banks, moments ago the Treasury sold 3Y notes in what may have been the best auction since the start of the war. Just after 1pm, the US treasury sold $58BN in 3Y notes at a high yield of 3.897%, up sharply from 3.579% a month ago and the highest since last June’s 3.972%. More importantly, the auction stopped through the When Issued 3.909% by 1.2bps, the biggest stop through since Feb 2025 and the 7th stop through in the past 8 auctions. The bid to cover bounced nicely from last month’s 2.546 to 2.682, the highest since November.  The internals were even stronger: indirects, or foreign central banks, came back in droves after aggressively selling US paper in recent week, and were allotted 74.8% of the auction – the highest since Sept 2024, and the second highest on record. And with Directs awarded just …

WTI Steady After Biggest Cushing Crude Build In 3 Years; Imports From Venezuela Highest Since 2019

WTI Steady After Biggest Cushing Crude Build In 3 Years; Imports From Venezuela Highest Since 2019

Oil prices remain lower this morning, following the US proposal for a ceasefire with Iran, but off the lows following Iran’s rejection. “From the Iranian perspective, Trump’s actions this week have demonstrated that the US can be pressured when Iran threatens further escalation,” said Arne Lohmann Rasmussen, chief analyst at A/S Global Risk Management. Futures had already pared losses as Tehran fired a new wave of missiles at Israel, and signaled little willingness to compromise. Iran’s armed forces added to a stream of messaging that ruled out ceasefire talks, according to state-run IRIB News. They added that they wouldn’t allow oil prices to return to their previous levels until all threats against the country were removed. Overnight saw API report a modest rise in crude and refined product inventories and while oil prices are really more attuned to the geopolitical headlines currently, we’re keeping our eyes on the domestic supply and demand for any signs of an actual impact locally. Singapore’s core inflation rises to 1.4% in February, highest since December 2024

Singapore’s core inflation rises to 1.4% in February, highest since December 2024

SECTORS Official data released on Monday showed that accommodation inflation declined to 0.3 per cent in February from 1.9 per cent the month before. This was due to a smaller increase in the cost of housing maintenance and repairs, said MAS and MTI. Private transport inflation eased from 2.7 per cent in January to 2.4 per cent in February on account of a larger decline in petrol prices in February. Electricity and gas prices fell from -4.2 per cent to -4.3 per cent because of a steeper decline in electricity prices in February, while retail and other goods inflation picked up slightly from 0.5 to 0.6 per cent due to a larger increase in the cost of medicines and health products, as well as higher prices for furniture and furnishings. Food inflation rose to 1.6 per cent in February from 1.2 per cent, as the prices of non-cooked food and food services rose at a quicker pace. Services inflation went up to 2 per cent, from 1.5 per cent, primarily because of an increase in …
