The breathtaking wonders of California Highway 127

The breathtaking wonders of California Highway 127

By midwinter, Los Angeles is defined less by cold than by light. Cool, clear mornings give way to afternoons shaped by the low winter arc of the sun, painting the mountains in long shadows and the sky in improbable color. And as that low light settles in, my whole body shifts in spirit. Somewhere deep in the limbic system, a synapse fires like a flare, tracing the old circuitry of migration and memory — that annual pull toward the wide-open deserts of the American Southwest. I dream of lizards, dark skies, sand dunes and sunsets streaked in rose-mauve and smoky violet, the air heavy with the scent of wet creosote and campfire smoke. A sunrise in the desert. (Josh Jackson) But mostly I long for the open road, those forgotten highways where pavement runs through the quaint towns, weathered landmarks and the millions of acres of public land in the desert. It is a nostalgia shared by the chroniclers of the past. In 1971, Lane Magazine published “The Backroads of California,” a large-format book that …

Cybertruck Attempts to Fling Baby Onto Highway

Cybertruck Attempts to Fling Baby Onto Highway

Illustration by Tag Hartman-Simkins / Futurism. Source: Getty Images A couple says their Tesla Cybertruck nearly dumped their baby onto the side of the highway after its passenger door latch failed, The Oaklandside reports. The husband, Oakland resident Viral Shah, says he and his wife were driving up a ramp to get on the highway when the back passenger door next to their one-year-old child suddenly swung open. Shah and his wife screamed and immediately pulled over to check on their kid. Fortunately, the car seat saved the baby from being flung out the car, but it was an alarmingly close call. And had the 60-pound stainless steel-clad door swung back closed, it could have smashed the child’s hand or arm. If anyone had been sitting back there without a seatbelt, Shah told The Oaklandside, “they would’ve been mush on the street.” His wife had to take the child’s seat, buckle herself in, and hold the door closed for the rest of the drive home. ”This is f*cking nuts,” she said, Shah recalled. Upon inspecting …

Tesla to charge subscription fee for some highway driver-assist features in US, Canada

Tesla to charge subscription fee for some highway driver-assist features in US, Canada

Jan 23 : Tesla on Thursday stopped including some driver-assistance features with new vehicles sold in the U.S. and Canada, requiring customers who want self-steering and similar technology to pay for a broader $99 monthly subscription. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been focusing on boosting revenue from artificial intelligence-driven autonomous vehicle technology in the company’s personal vehicles and robotaxis as sales of its aging electric vehicles soften. Though EV sales account for most of Tesla’s income, investors are eager to see if the company can make money off AI, and much of Tesla’s $1.4 trillion valuation hangs on that bet. New Tesla buyers will get Traffic Aware Cruise Control, a feature that maintains a set speed and follows traffic at a safe distance, included in their purchases, Tesla’s online vehicle configuration pages showed on Friday. Autosteer, a feature that keeps vehicles centered in a lane on highways, will no longer come standard. Tesla stopped offering Autopilot, which included Autosteer, and also stopped selling Enhanced Autopilot, which can change lanes. Customers wanting that level of assistance now have …

40 electric semi trucks set to hit Texas’ highway

40 electric semi trucks set to hit Texas’ highway

LA-based logistics firm Nevoya is doing its part to reduce air pollution on Texas’ highways by deploying fully forty (40) battery-electric semi trucks on their new Houston-Dallas commercial trucking route. Texas’ highways are getting a significant Class 8 HDEV upgrade with the rollout of forty (of what appears to be) 116″ BBC Freightliner eCascadia day cab trucks, which feature optional battery packs with up to 438 kWh of capacity good for fully-loaded range of ~220 miles. The task of keeping the big Freuightliners on the road with minimal downtime for charging is covered with a number of strategically-placed DC fast chargers from Greenlane. The purchase and deployment of the forty battery-powered electric semi trucks and their associated charging infrastructure is being supported by a pilot procurement program from the Washington, DC-based nonprofit Center for Green Market Activation (GMA) and Netherlands-based Smart Freight Centre. Tesla Fan Profusely Praises FSD For Veering His Car off the Side of the Highway

Tesla Fan Profusely Praises FSD For Veering His Car off the Side of the Highway

After a Tesla in Full Self-Driving mode suddenly swerved off of a busy highway and almost straight into a ditch, the owner of the vehicle praised the driving technology to high heaven for supposedly saving his skin. “Tesla FSD saved my life last night on Interstate 95 in South Carolina,” wrote the driver, who goes by the display name “The Electric Israeli.” “Car in front braked hard suddenly. FSD veered to the left and got back safely on the road,” he explained. “Thank you @Tesla_AI.” The user, who also calls himself “Dr. Moshe,” helpfully uploaded footage of the incident, and it paints FSD’s supposedly heroic intervention in a far more dubious light. During a night commute, the video shows the Tesla tailing an SUV in front of it at a reasonable enough distance. But when the SUV brakes and slows down, neither FSD nor Moshe take notice. There‘s ample time to react, but instead of gradually slowing down to respond to the SUV in front, the Tesla’s self-driving software brakes at the last second and …

High-Pressure NatGas Line Ruptures Outside Los Angeles, Forcing Major Highway Shutdown

A rupture of a high-pressure 34-inch natural gas transmission line late Saturday afternoon forced the temporary closure of Interstate 5 north of Los Angeles for several hours and led to a shelter-in-place order for thousands of residents in Castaic. Capt. Brian Knight, a spokesman for L.A. County Fire, told ABC News that a loud blast was reported around 4:20 p.m. local time. Knight said there were no reports of any injuries.
