The Bafta games awards showed me again that honouring art over commerce is a win for all | Games

The 22nd Bafta game awards were on Friday, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 took the biggest game prize. This makes it only the second game ever (after Baldur’s Gate 3) to win top prize at all five of the main awards shows: the Dice awards in Vegas; the Game awards in LA; the public-voted Golden Joysticks in the UK; the Game Developers Choice awards in San Francisco; and now London’s Baftas, the final event to celebrate the gaming output of 2025. I’ll be honest: I was hoping for a different winner. Blue Prince, an eight-year project by the visual artist and former film-maker Tonda Ros, is the most extraordinary thing I played last year. It’s the game where you inherit a sprawling mansion that changes shape every day, and you must navigate its ever-shifting blueprint to find its secret room. I went so deep on this game that I was still playing it and thinking about it weeks after solving its initial mystery, piecing together bits of opaque lore from Reddit threads. I think it …

IOC bans helmet honouring Ukraine’s war dead at Olympics, allows black armband

IOC bans helmet honouring Ukraine’s war dead at Olympics, allows black armband

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Tuesday said Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych could wear a black armband at the Winter Olympics instead of a banned helmet that features Ukrainians killed in the war with Russia. Spokesperson Mark Adams said the helmet contravened IOC guidelines about political symbols but said it would “make an exception to the guidelines to allow him to wear a black armband during competition to make that commemoration”. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had earlier defended the Olympian’s right to wear a helmet featuring athletes killed during the war with Russia, thanking him in a post on X. “I thank the flag bearer of our national team at the Winter Olympics, Vladyslav Heraskevych, for reminding the world of the price of our struggle,” Zelensky said on X. “This truth cannot be inconvenient, inappropriate or called a ‘political demonstration at a sporting event.’ It is a reminder to the entire world of what modern Russia is,” the president added. New Lynley stars on honouring the past – and making reboot their own

New Lynley stars on honouring the past – and making reboot their own

The latest small-screen iteration of Elizabeth George’s Inspector Lynley series stars Leo Suter (Vikings: Valhalla) as the eponymous detective Thomas Lynley, ably assisted by Sofia Barclay’s DS Barbara Havers. Previously, the BBC’s earlier version ran for six seasons between 2001 and 2008, with Nathaniel Parker and Sharon Small in the lead roles. Speaking to RadioTimes.com ahead of its premiere, Suter and Barclay (Ted Lasso) revealed that it was important for them to honour the literary roots and previous adaptations while also putting their own stamp on the Lynley universe. “When you’re doing a new version of something, it’s important to respect the previous version, but also to know that you’re doing your own thing and bringing your own stamp to it,” Suter said of this new take on the long-running series. “If you try to imitate what was so brilliant before, you’ll fail. Inevitably, you have to do your own thing and trust your instincts, so I actually felt quite calm early on about doing that.” For both actors, the previous adaptation and George’s source …

Panamean monument honouring China’s contribution to Canal torn down

China has spoken out against the demolition of a monument near the entrance to the Panama Canal, celebrating the friendship of the two nations, with local authorities citing safety issues and an expired land concession. It comes amid warnings from Donald Trump over Beijing’s influence over the key waterway, which he claims could threaten global trade and security. Keywords for this article Source link
