China’s Huawei touts chip design breakthrough in bid to defy U.S. sanctions

SHANGHAI — Chinese tech giant Huawei said Monday that it had achieved a breakthrough that would allow it to make cutting-edge chips within five years, touting the news as a milestone in Beijing’s effort to circumvent U.S. technology restrictions. With the United States and China vying for global dominance in artificial intelligence, U.S. sanctions that began in 2019 have largely cut Huawei off from global makers of semiconductor chips, the tiny brains that power everything from smartphones to computers to cars. Washington has also limited Beijing’s access to chip design software and semiconductor manufacturing equipment such as lithography machines, leading the Chinese government to invest billions into developing its own semiconductor supply chain. Huawei said Monday at a tech conference in Shanghai that by 2031, its high-end chips would have transistor density equivalent to 1.4-nanometer processes, which is considered the industry’s cutting edge. That compares with the 7 nanometers China’s most advanced chipmaking capability is currently thought to be, and …

Commission blocks EU funding for Huawei solar tech – POLITICO

Inverters are a piece of technology that turns solar panels’ electricity into current that flows into the grid. Huawei is a market leader in the technology. The EU has long been concerned about the threat posed by Chinese tech giant Huawei and its smaller rival ZTE in 5G networks, and is seeking to push EU member countries to remove them from their telecom networks — a position it is now trying to make mandatory. Concerns over Huawei’s dominance in the solar technology market have flared more recently. Risks posed by foreign interference in clean energy networks include manipulation of “electricity production parameters,” disruption of electricity generation and unauthorized access to operational data, McGarry said Monday. This could mean a “remote shutdown … leading to countrywide blackouts,” she said.  Suppliers from China, Russia, North Korea and Iran are affected by the ban, the unnamed EU official said, though they noted that Chinese suppliers hold 80 percent of the global market share of solar inverters.  The revised Cybersecurity Act also seeks to tackle these risks in the …

AITO joins BMW, Mercedes-Benz charging JV in China as equal partner

AITO joins BMW, Mercedes-Benz charging JV in China as equal partner

SERES Group’s Huawei-powered AITO brand is joining IONCHI, the premium charging joint venture between BMW and Mercedes-Benz in China, as an equal 33.3% shareholder. The deal restructures what was a 50:50 German partnership into a three-way collaboration with one of China’s fastest-growing luxury EV brands. The move signals a significant shift in China’s EV charging landscape, where German and Chinese automakers are now directly collaborating on premium infrastructure rather than competing on separate networks. The IONCHI joint venture was originally formed by BMW and Mercedes-Benz in late 2023 as a 50:50 partnership between Mercedes-Benz Group China and BMW Brilliance Automotive. The goal was ambitious: build at least 1,000 high-power charging stations with approximately 7,000 charging points across 100 Chinese cities by the end of 2026. Progress has been steady but faces a significant ramp. By December 2025, IONCHI had connected around 430 fast-charging stations with 2,408 charging points across 37 cities. That means the network needs to more than double its station count and nearly triple its charging points in 2026 to hit the original …

Huawei Teases a Wider Foldable, and the Timing Feels Very Apple-Adjacent

Huawei Teases a Wider Foldable, and the Timing Feels Very Apple-Adjacent

Huawei’s new extra-wide foldable phone was revealed on Monday, and it’s already drawing comparisons to the next big thing from Apple. Little is known about the Pura X Max, teased on China’s Weibo social network, but the internet is buzzing over its uncommon proportions, wide aspect ratio and similarities with the rumored iPhone Fold expected to arrive later this year.  There are plenty of different ways to fold a phone, and tech companies have been experimenting with various configurations over the last few years. There are clamshell-style devices, like the Motorola Razr and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7, which fold like OG flip phones, shrinking down into a pocketable square. Then came taller, book-style phones that unfold to reveal larger, tablet-size displays. These days, you can even find trifold phones with two hinges. However you fold it, most foldables either start or end with the familiar candybar shape as their base. Manufacturers have experimented with a variety of different foldable configurations, yet the Pura X Max’s wide proportions are uncommon. Huawei Huawei’s Pura X Max — …

Huawei Pura X Max might usher the era of wide foldable phones

Step aside, Apple and Samsung; it’s China’s Huawei that currently rules the unusually-wide-foldable-phones niche. On Monday, the company published a teaser video of its upcoming Huawei Pura X Max foldable phone. SEE ALSO: Every foldable phone planned or rumored for 2026 The Pura X Max will officially launch on Apr. 20 alongside the more conventional Pura 90 Pro, so we don’t know all of the exact specs yet. Huawei, however, did say the foldable will come with a triple rear camera, with 12/16GB of RAM, and 256/512/1,024GB of storage. Mashable Light Speed I could watch a movie on this. Huawei hasn’t been very popular in the U.S. since it was restricted from using U.S. tech seven years ago, forcing the phone maker to give up on Android as an operating system. But what makes this particular phone …

New Huawei Foldable Looks a Lot Like Apple’s Rumored iPhone Fold

New Huawei Foldable Looks a Lot Like Apple’s Rumored iPhone Fold

Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone is expected to feature a book-style form factor that’s relatively uncommon in the foldables market, but Huawei’s new Pura X Max appears to share a similar wide aspect ratio. Set to be released in China next week, Huawei’s new device actually builds upon a design used by the original, smaller Pura X, which was marketed last year as an extra-wide flip phone. Little is known about the Pura X Max beyond its triple lens rear camera, while Huawei’s imagery shows the device being used in both portrait and landscape. Prior to the Pura X Max’s unveiling, Apple’s rumored device was said to most resemble Oppo’s Find N5. Samsung is also believed to be adopting a similar wide aspect ratio form factor for one of its upcoming foldables. We’ve heard plenty of rumors about the foldable iPhone‌’s design, but the first alleged dummy models appeared last week. The device will have a 5.5-inch display when closed, making it Apple’s smallest current-generation iPhone. When open, it will be around 7.8 inches, which is …

EU’s Huawei hardliners get top court backing – POLITICO

EU’s Huawei hardliners get top court backing – POLITICO

It is a win for China hawks, who have fought to impose tougher measures against Huawei — with strong backing from Washington. The EU has spent years trying to persuade national governments to voluntarily kick out Huawei and ZTE over concerns that their presence in European telecom networks could enable large-scale spying and surveillance by the Chinese government. It is now working on broader rules that seek to reduce the bloc’s reliance on foreign “high-risk” suppliers and limit foreign government control over its digital networks. The case was brought by Estonian telecom operator Elisa, which is seeking compensation for the costs of removing Huawei and is challenging whether the EU has the competence to ask for restrictions on Chinese vendors. Thursday’s opinion said national security authorities can follow EU guidance when imposing bans on Huawei. The Court of Justice is expected to issue its final ruling on the case later this year, and may take the opinion from Advocate General Tamara Ćapet into account. Laszlo Toth, head of Europe at global telecom lobby association GSMA, …

Spain is handing ‘crown jewels’ to Huawei, lawmakers warn – POLITICO

The Spanish government has defended the contract it struck for storing wiretaps. Spain’s Interior Ministry said in a statement that the government had awarded a contract to “European companies,” which then bought storage products. “There is no risk to security, technological and legal sovereignty, nor is there any foreign interference or threat to the custody of evidence,” the ministry said. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska told the Spanish parliament last September that Telefónica, the country’s telecom champion, operated a state surveillance system called SITEL and that storage “cabinets” had been integrated into that system.   Bloomberg reported last July that Huawei equipment is not used for classified information, with one government official saying the storage “represents a minor part of a watertight, audited, isolated and certified system.” On Monday, Juan Fernando López Aguilar, a prominent member of the European Parliament for the Socialists and Democrats group and a member of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchéz’s party in Spain, defended Madrid’s contract and pushed back on EU moves to intervene on the issue. In terms of “security, espionage, or …

How iPhones Made a Surprising Comeback in China

How iPhones Made a Surprising Comeback in China

After a prolonged slump, Apple’s business is suddenly thriving again in China. The tech giant said in its latest earnings report last week that revenue from the country rose 38 percent year over year in the last quarter, primarily driven by surging demand for iPhones. The rebound came after Apple’s China sales had declined for 18 consecutive months between 2024 and early 2025. In a call with analysts, CEO Tim Cook said Apple set a new record for iPhone upgrades among Chinese customers and saw double-digit growth in the number of users switching from other operating systems to iOS. “Overall, a great quarter in China. We could not be happier with it,” Cook concluded in his signature monotone voice. Apple’s fantastic performance came as a surprise to many observers of the Chinese smartphone market. In recent years, homegrown brands like Huawei and Xiaomi have chipped away at Apple’s market share by releasing premium, feature-packed devices that directly compete with the iPhone. Huawei, for instance, stunned the tech industry when it released a $2,800 smartphone with …
