Imax Takeover Wall Street Speculates Who May Bid

As Imax appears up for sale with early-stage talks with possible suitors, financial analysts have lost no time speculating on who may be a likely buyer. And Wall Street’s list, right now, is long. It stretches from traditional exhibitors (possibly), to private equity firms (could be circling) and tech giants (it would be a rounding error for them) along with a couple major entertainment conglomerates. David Joyce, at Seaport Research Partners, argued Imax is performing well as a standalone large format cinema company. But if the company is for sale, Joyce in a May 22 note pointed to Cinemark or AMC Theatres as logical acquirers, and added “we truly hope it is going to be an all-cash deal for investors since most potential strategic investors would have conflicts of interest that could hinder the trajectory of the business.” Long term Imax investors are no strangers to possible sales talk around the film technologies company as the Toronto-based company, led by CEO Richard Gelfond since 1994, over the years has sounded out the market for a …

Imax CEO Richard Gelfond Takes Medical Leave Pneumonia Treatment

Imax says CEO Richard Gelfond is taking a temporary medical leave to undergo treatment for pneumonia. “He is receiving outstanding care and progressing in his recovery,” the film technologies company said in a statement on Monday. During his recovery, Gelfond, who has led the company since 2009 after first joining as co-CEO in 1993, will be absent from private or private events at Imax. In his place, Imax senior execs, led by CFO Natasha Fernandes, will oversee day-to-day responsibilities alongside board chairman Darren Throop. “Imax is issuing this statement to provide transparency and ensure that there is no speculation arising out of Mr. Gelfond not appearing at the company’s upcoming events, including next week’s industry conferences,” the company added. Gelfond more recently has been at the Imax helm as the company navigates a post-pandemic box office rebound for the Hollywood studios, his main movie suppliers, on the strength of an in-demand premium screen offering and Hollywood movies shot with proprietary Imax cameras. Imax Posts $1.28 Billion Global Box Office 2025 Cinemas Struggle

A worldwide theater network expansion helped Imax post $1.28 billion in global box office for 2025, a new company record. That surpassed Imax’s previous highwater mark of $1.1 billion in global box office for 2019 when measuring ticket sales in North America, China and the rest of the world. Imax, which earlier forecast $1.2 billion to $1.25 billion in gross global box office for 2025, on Wednesday put its record year down to more of its big screen releases shot with its “Filmed for Imax” proprietary cameras and an expanded film slate that includes more local language titles. “2025 was truly a transformational year for Imax in which we leveled up our performance across our business, capturing a greater share of total box office with a wider variety of releases across an expanding global footprint,” Rich Gelfond, CEO of Imax, said in a statement. “We see no signs of slowing down given a very promising slate ahead and the consistency of our market share gains, as filmmakers, studios, and audiences worldwide continue to gravitate toward the …
