BYD reveals China’s first in-house 4nm smart driving chip

BYD’s new in-house 4nm smart driving chip, China’s first, unlocks “the highest level of vehicle intelligence” with L3 and L4 autonomous driving capabilities. BYD unveils China’s first 4nm in-house smart driving chip During its Intelligent Strategy Launch on Thursday, BYD unveiled its latest breakthrough technology, “Xuanji A3,” China’s first self-developed 4nm assisted-driving chip. CEO Wang Chuanfu said during the event that the new chip supports Level 3 and Level 4 autonomous driving, claiming it “represents the highest level of intelligent driving chips in China.” Combined with its in-house algorithms used in its God’s Eye ADAS system and Xuanji architecture, BYD said computing power utilization has doubled, up 100%. According to BYD, the new Xuanji A3 smart driving chip has already entered mass production. The bigger news, however, is that unlike most automakers that outsource chips, BYD builds the chips entirely in-house, along with nearly every other vehicle component. Chuanfu said that BYD is now the only …

Subaru indefinitely postpones in-house EVs after profits plunge 90%

Subaru indefinitely postpones in-house EVs after profits plunge 90%

Subaru has dropped 2028 as the target year for launching its own in-house developed electric vehicles, with no new timeline set. The Japanese automaker’s new EV factory will produce gas and hybrid models instead. The decision comes after Subaru’s operating profits collapsed 90% for the fiscal year, with tariffs alone costing the company roughly ¥229 billion ($1.4 billion) and EV-related write-downs adding another $385 million in losses. Subaru retreats from in-house EV development Subaru had planned to roll out up to four independently developed electric vehicles by 2028, built at a new factory within the Oizumi Plant in Gunma prefecture. That plant was supposed to start EV production in 2027. Instead, it will now open producing gasoline and hybrid vehicles, with EV production pushed to an undefined future date. This is the second time in six months that Subaru has pulled back from its EV commitments. Back in November, the company announced it was redirecting funds from its planned ¥1.5 trillion ($9.7 billion) EV investment toward hybrid and ICE development. Now, the in-house EV program …

Amazon Pushed Its Employees to Use Its In-House AI Coding Tool, But They Wouldn’t Stop Asking for Claude

Amazon Pushed Its Employees to Use Its In-House AI Coding Tool, But They Wouldn’t Stop Asking for Claude

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech In November, Amazon leaders sent an internal memo to employees, pushing them to use its in-house code generating tool, Kiro, over third-party alternatives from competitors. “While we continue to support existing tools in use today, we do not plan to support additional third party, AI development tools,” the memo read, as quoted by Reuters at the time. “As part of our builder community, you all play a critical role shaping these products and we use your feedback to aggressively improve them.” It was an unusual development, considering the tens of billions of dollars the e-commerce giant has invested in its competitors in the space, including Anthropic and OpenAI. Both of these companies have been caught in a heated head-to-head race to establish dominance in the quickly growing AI coding field — while seemingly leaving Amazon’s Kiro long behind. Half a year later, Amazon is singing a dramatically different tune. As Business Insider reports, Amazon has succumbed to growing calls …

Apple Stores Will Soon Be Able to Restore Apple Watch Software In-House

Apple Stores Will Soon Be Able to Restore Apple Watch Software In-House

Apple retail locations and Apple Authorized Service Providers will soon be able to restore Apple Watch software in-store without needing to send an Apple Watch to a service center, according to a retail source that spoke to MacRumors. Right now, Apple Watches that can’t be restored using an iPhone need to be mailed to an Apple Repair Center for service. There is no in-store repair option, so customers have to wait for the Apple Watch to be shipped to the repair depot, get repaired, and be shipped back. Starting later this month, Apple Stores and AASPs will be able to use an Apple Watch repair dock that connects to a Mac to restore the software on an Apple Watch. An in-store option for fixing software will make software-based repairs much quicker. With watchOS 8.5 and iOS 15.4, Apple introduced an iPhone-based wireless restore option, but it is limited. It can only be used when a restore prompt is shown on the Apple Watch. For software issues where the iPhone restore doesn’t work, the Apple Watch …

7 In-House Brands the Real Menswear Nerds Are Buying

7 In-House Brands the Real Menswear Nerds Are Buying

Some of the hottest in-house brands right now are quietly hiding in plain sight, mixed in on the racks of the world’s best multi-label shops. Whether you’re digging through designers IRL or toggling between fifty-eleven tabs at 1 a.m., you’ve probably stumbled onto a name you’ve never heard of, only to realize it’s exclusive to that one retailer. That’s the magic trick of in-house brands: clothes sold under a retailer’s own name, produced by a third party, and often very, very good. Typically, it starts with shop owners building long-standing relationships with the brands they carry. From there, collaborations creep in, lessons are learned, and suddenly they’ve got a strong handle on where the best denim comes from, who actually knows knitwear, and which country absolutely nails outerwear. Not to go full Menswear MBA on you, but private labels give retailers control over branding, design, pricing—and yes, those sweeter margins compared to third-party brands. One of my earliest “oh, wow” moments with private labels came courtesy of the now-defunct Need Supply and its sister shop, …

Apple acquires all rights to ‘Severance,’ will produce future seasons in-house

Apple acquires all rights to ‘Severance,’ will produce future seasons in-house

Apple has acquired the IP and all rights to its hit show “Severance” from its original studio, Fifth Season, as first reported by Deadline. Under the deal, which was worth just under $70 million, Apple’s in-house studio will be producing the show’s future seasons. Fifth Season will remain as an executive producer. The deal is similar to one Apple struck with AMC Studios for sci-fi show “Silo” after season one. “Severance” will now be one of Apple’s marquee titles, joining popular series such as “Your Friends and Neighbors” and “Stick.” According to Deadline, the production costs for “Severance” had exceeded what Fifth Season could afford. The studio had already requested advances from Apple and was considering relocating production from New York to Canada for bigger and quicker tax rebates. Since Apple definitely has the funds to back the show, the company decided to take full control. “Severance” is important to the streamer, as the show’s second season became Apple’s most-watched series at the time. It also had the highest number of nominations at the 2025 Emmy …

Subaru builds its first in-house EV, a new electric SUV

The new electric SUV is now rolling off the production line at Subaru’s Gunma Yajima Plant, the first time an EV has been made at the facility. The Trailseeker is Subaru’s first EV made in-house After renovations began last August to upgrade the production lines, Subaru built its first in-house EV at the facility this week. The Trailseeker, which will be called the e-Outback in some European markets, is Subaru’s second global electric SUV following the Solterra. Unlike the Solterra, the Trailseeker is produced at Subaru’s own facility in Japan. The Solterra is built at a Toyota-owned facility. Advertisement – scroll for more content While the electric SUV is made in-house, Toyota still has a hand in it. The Trailseeker is co-developed with Toyota and built on a modified version of its e-TNGA platform. The Trailseeker is a bigger, more powerful electric SUV than the Solterra, similar to the Toyota bZ Woodland. With a length of 190.6″ (4,841 mm) and a height of 65.9″ (1,674 m), the Trailseeker is about 6″ longer than the Solterra …
