A rail track “irregularity” existed in the area where a train derailed in Lewes, East Sussex last week, injuring 30 people, the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) said. The RAIB said rear facing CCTV images obtained from train services on August 13 showed a “track geometry irregularity” on the “immediate approach to the point of derailment” on the line just outside Lewes Railway Station. The report added “there was also evidence of previous track maintenance activity in this area”. It said: “Following the accident, RAIB has received several reports of rough riding at the location of the derailment from passengers on other trains.” A preliminary data analysis of the train’s ‘black box’ showed that “the driver applied the train’s brakes as it passed the point of derailment, and that the train started to decelerate”. The derailment took place on the Down Lewes line at around 48 miles and 60 chains, where the maximum permissible speed for the type of train involved in the accident is 70mph (113 km/h). The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits for the first time fell last week to 215k (after hitting four month highs last week), well below the 225k expectations and back to the same levels it was at in 2021… New Jersey and Oregon saw the biggest WoW rise in initial jobless claims while Minnesota and Pennsylvania saw the biggest decline… At the same time, continuing jobless claims picked up to 1.821 million Americans – the highest in 3 months… The bottom line is that initial claims remain low by historical standards and continue to run below year-ago levels, reinforcing the more hawkish ‘labor market is resilient’ framework introduced last week. One of the most foundational questions we know how to ask in astronomy is simply this: given a cloud of gas of a given mass, what types of stars will form? How many stars of a given mass will you wind up with, and what factors does that depend on? The answer to this question, if we can give an answer, is known as the “initial mass function,” and is generally very difficult to measure except in the most nearby of places: within our own Milky Way. It’s possible that every time we form stars, we have a different initial mass function to reckon with. It’s possible that in a different environment, perhaps with less dust, fewer heavy elements, or earlier in the Universe (when the background temperature was hotter), things behaved very differently from how they do in the here-and-now. Yet because of the extreme difference in brightness between high-mass and low-mass stars, we can only measure both high and low mass stars together nearby.
