I’ve seen the new Dyson toothbrush first hand – here are my (and a dentist’s) initial thoughts

Dr. Tilly’s second concern is how effective the three-in-one design will really be: “I have some hesitations about the effect of mouthwash at the same time as brushing (usually a big no no from the dentist).”

The other visible flaw at this stage is the size of the docking station, which charges the device, refills the mouthrinse and acts as a place for the toothbrush to live. “It may not fit into people’s bathroom set-up,” says Dr. Tilly. Thankfully, the device itself can also charge via a USB-C cable (the same used to charge most modern smartphones), which means you can forego the cumbersome docking station, which is particularly useful for travel.

Our initial verdict

Telegraph Recommended approaches new releases with an open mind, but the Dyson CameraJet does look like it could go some way to modernising the electric toothbrush industry, which hasn’t seen much progress in years. As with all Dyson products, it will take several iterations to fine-tune the product – it needs shrinking, for starters – but it’s exciting, and something I’d be interested in trying.

“I think it’s important to recognise that we need large scale, independent scientific research to truly assess the impact of the Dyson toothbrush,” says Dr. Tilly.
