Scarring frequently gets in the way of nerve fiber regrowth, while nerve cells usually cannot regenerate on their own. A possible solution? A fleet of stem cell-infused, injectable nanorobots that can help nerve cells regenerate. The tiny bots are detailed in a study recently published in the journal Nature Materials. To build their new tools, a team at ETH Zurich in Switzerland engineered microscopic machines that combine living neural progenitor cells (NPCs)—specialized stem cells developed for the spine—with customized nanoparticles. These customized nanoparticles feature two layers—one that is sensitive to magnetic fields and another that translates them into electrical signals. “We place a reservoir in the …

1 Person Has Died After Blast at New York City Shipyard That Also Injured 36 People, Officials Say.

NEW YORK (AP) — One person has died after a fire and two explosions Friday at a New York City shipyard, officials say. Officials said 36 people were injured, most of them firefighters and other first responders, and one civilian died at the scene. A firefighter and a fire marshal were inside the structure when a second explosion happened, and both were seriously injured by the shock wave from the blast. “This was a complex, fast-developing emergency situation,” New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said during a news conference Friday evening. Multiple people called the fire department around 3:30 p.m., reporting smoke and two workers trapped in the basement of a 150-foot by 150-foot (46 meters by 46 meters) metal structure at the back of the shipyard, Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore said. Firefighting and EMS crews were on the scene within six minutes. But shortly after they arrived, an explosion occurred, causing serious injuries to multiple fire department members and a couple of civilians, Bonsignore said — including one who died at the scene. Five firefighters …

Icing injuries prolongs pain and slows recovery, researchers find

An ice pack on a swollen ankle can feel like the most obvious cure in the world. It dulls pain, reduces swelling, and has been part of sports and first-aid advice for decades. But new research from McGill University suggests that quick relief may come with a tradeoff. In mice, icing eased pain early on, yet it also stretched recovery much longer than expected. The work, published in Anesthesiology, points to a problem that is starting to surface across pain research. Treatments that tamp down inflammation can make people or animals feel better right away, but inflammation is also part of the body’s repair process. Shut too much of it down, and healing may not unfold the way it should. “These results highlight a paradox: treatments that reduce inflammation and relieve pain in the short term may, in some cases, interfere with the biological processes required for full recovery,” said lead author Lucas Lima, a research associate at the Alan Edwards Centre for Research on Pain. That tension sits at the center of the new …

England’s Hunt and Talling ruled out of Six Nations with leg injuries

April 13 : England’s Natasha Hunt and Morwenna Talling will miss the rest of the Women’s Six Nations tournament after both players suffered leg injuries during Saturday’s 33-12 win over Ireland in their opening game, the RFU said on Monday. Lock Talling, who played a key role when England won the Rugby World Cup last year, is the latest second row to miss the tournament after Zoe Stratford, Abbie Ward and Rosie Galligan withdrew due to pregnancy. Both Talling and scrum-half Hunt will see specialists in camp this week before returning to their clubs, the RFU said in a statement. After Saturday’s win, England coach John Mitchell said the team would adapt to the situation despite key absences. “We have lost four international locks so we will probably be a team of back-rowers by the end of the competition. There are different ways to play this game and if we have to rely on back-rowers, we will make it work,” he told reporters. Defending champions England next face Scotland on Saturday, as they build up …

McMichael, a Hall of Famer and key player on the 1985 Chicago Bears, was diagnosed after his death with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), the Concussion & CTE Foundation said. He died last year at age 67 after a five-year battle with ALS.  CTE is a progressive brain disease linked to repeated hits to the head. It can only be confirmed after death through brain studies. It has been found in athletes who played contact sports, as well as in military veterans, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. The disease can cause symptoms such as: Confusion Depression Memory problems Impulsive behavior McMichael’s diagnosis adds to the growing body of research linking CTE to ALS, a disease that damages nerve cells and makes it hard to control muscles. “Too many NFL players are developing ALS during life and diagnosed with CTE after death,” Misty McMichael, the Hall of Famer’s wife, …
