South Africa’s top court revives impeachment inquiry against president | Politics News

The scandal centres on a large sum of foreign currency stolen from President Cyril Ramaphosa’s farmhouse in 2020. Published On 8 May 20268 May 2026 South Africa’s highest court has cleared the way for the revival of impeachment proceedings against President Cyril Ramaphosa, ruling that parliament’s decision to block an inquiry four years ago was inconsistent with the constitution. Ramaphosa avoided impeachment proceedings in 2022 after his governing African National Congress (ANC) party used its parliamentary majority to reject a recommendation by an independent panel that he face an inquiry into the theft of a large sum of cash from his farmhouse two years earlier. The scandal, dubbed “Farmgate”, sparked accusations that he had failed to properly account for the source of the money hidden in a sofa. Labour MPs face a ‘lose-lose’ vote on Starmer sleaze inquiry

Labour MPs face a ‘lose-lose’ vote on Starmer sleaze inquiry

Pity the poor Labour MPs who will be expected to walk through the lobbies on Tuesday to decide whether Sir Keir Starmer should be investigated for contempt of the House. Privately, a number of them are already complaining about being in a “lose-lose situation” with Sir Keir expected to ignore the precedent set by Boris Johnson in April 2022 and whip his MPs to vote against the move. As one Labour MP put it, if they vote to support a Privileges Committee inquiry into whether the prime minister misled parliament, they will be “inviting months of chaos and speculation” while needlessly handing the Conservatives a win. But many are reluctant to back a seriously wounded prime minister who is expected to face a serious challenge to his leadership within weeks despite him making a personal appeal to them at a Monday evening showdown with the parliamentary party. His appeal to them to “look at the big picture” did not have the impact he hoped for with one MP noting that “the big picture is how …

Tillis Gives Warsh Green Light After DOJ Drops Powell Inquiry

The last roadblock to Kevin Warsh’s nomination to lead the Federal Reserve is getting out of the way, as North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis (R) said on Sunday that he’s ready to lend his support towards Warsh’s confirmation.  Tillis had refused to advance Warsh or any other Fed nominee until the DOJ dropped its investigation into current chair, Jerome Powell over cost overruns in a renovation of the Fed’s headquarters. After DC US attorney Jeanine Pirro said on Friday that the matter would be dropped, Tillis told NBC’s Meet the Press that he was ready to move forward with the first committee vote on Warsh. You just heard the AG leave the door open too. But will you now vote yes to confirm Kevin Warsh? TILLIS: I am now prepared to vote yes, with assurances from …

Should Hull be included in grooming gangs inquiry? | UK News

No victim who has reported a crime wants to hear that their case is being closed with no charges – but how much worse for the victims of child sexual abuse who have found the courage to come forward? Five young women in Hull reported their abuse back in 2019 – two investigations later – police efforts have hit a dead end. The letter to victims from Senior Investigator Detective Superintendent Alan Curtis, said “…this does not mean that you are not believed, and this decision does not reflect on you or the seriousness of what you have told us”. The young women have been left asking themselves: “What was the point?” Now their only hope is that the timing is perfect – coming in the week the national inquiry into grooming gangs begins to consider which towns and cities should be the focus of local investigations. Should one be Hull? There are other places where there have been obvious failings but also successful prosecutions. Why should the inquiry consider a city where police have …

Axel Rudakubana’s parents could have prevented Southport attack, inquiry finds | UK News

The Southport attack would have been prevented if Axel Rudakubana’s parents told the authorities what they knew about the killer, a public inquiry has found. Chairman Sir Adrian Fulford also said it was “highly likely” the murders of three girls at a Taylor Swift-themed dance workshop on 29 July 2024 would not have happened if agencies had properly managed the risk the teenager posed. Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, were killed, while Rudakubana, then 17, also tried to murder eight other children, class instructor Leanne Lucas and businessman John Hayes at The Hart Space in the Lancashire seaside town. “This terrible event could have been and should have been prevented,” said retired High Court Judge Sir Adrian Fulford in a statement as he unveiled his 763-page, two-volume report, in Liverpool Town Hall. Coroner opens inquiry into death of 78-year-old pedestrian; driver claims she did not hit her

SINGAPORE: A coroner’s inquiry opened on Wednesday (Apr 1) into the death of a 78-year-old pedestrian that occurred in unusual circumstances. Before she died, Madam Koh Kuan claimed she was struck by a car, but the driver – who took Mdm Koh to the hospital – said her vehicle did not have any impact with the woman. The sons of the late Mdm Koh, a Singaporean, attended the inquiry with a lawyer and asked the investigation officer multiple questions including about the inspection of the driver’s vehicle, which had some damage to the front that the driver claimed to be “old”. The court heard that the driver, Ms Monica Dee Choo-Ng Jolivet, a 54-year-old housewife, had lodged a police report at about 11am on Dec 31, 2024.  She said that she had been travelling along Selegie Road and making a right turn onto Sungei Road when she saw that Mdm Koh was on the road after a fall. The incident is believed to have taken place on Dec 31, 2024. Ms Choo-Ng then took her …

Photographer Larry Sultan’s New Book Chronicles His Lifelong Inquiry Into the Uneasy Theater of American Life

You have probably seen Practicing Golf Swing, a photo by Larry Sultan. It’s an image of his father, barefoot, practicing his golf swing inside his house. The daylight streams through gauzy white drawn curtains, and a small ’80s television set is on in the corner. It sums up Sultan’s work perfectly. He was a master of capturing domesticity and family life in both spontaneous and staged settings. His narrative collage style uses lush, vivid colors to tell the story. If you haven’t seen one of his pictures, you have definitely seen one that was inspired by them. Sultan was born in Brooklyn in 1946 and moved to the San Fernando Valley three years later. This sprawling urbanized area in Los Angeles County, often referred to simply as The Valley, is bordered by mountains, in a state that Joan Didion described as a “landscape of uneasy suspension, characterized by immense bleached skies, sprawling suburban developments, and …
