Well, what I opened on is that there wasn’t going to be one overall incentive for all of them, and I still don’t—you don’t see, like, one overarching incentive. Money is always an incentive for people, and jurors take a really hard look at that.

In the Alexander trial, the vast majority were allowed to testify under full pseudonyms. So they were allowed to come in under a name that wasn’t their own and swear on an oath.… To me, it was such an erosion of the presumption of innocence and an erosion of our process.

One of Weinstein’s previous attorneys during his first trial in 2020 was Donna Rotunno. When Vanity Fair ran a profile of her tied to the trial, the headline was “Who Would Defend Harvey Weinstein?” Now it’s like, lots of people.

That’s amazing.

She was also on the cover of Chicago magazine as “the anti–Gloria Allred.”

I love that.

Why?

I think—as the anti–Gloria Allred—in many ways what she has done is incredible for women; I have to put that aside. But what she has done for criminal cases is an erosion of what I think is the presumption of innocence.

I love to be up there fighting for my client; she does too. So it’s good to have another perspective. We shouldn’t only hear from Gloria Allred and Lisa Bloom. We should hear from the defendant’s perspective as well because that’s how our system will keep running.

We give so much air time to the accusers and not to the accused. They have a story to tell too. And what I think we’re seeing in these verdicts is that jurors see that. The context is important.

Are you political?

I’m not that political. I think prosecutors are more political. Defense lawyers are not.

Your dad is a big, big, big personality.

Yeah, much different than I am.

When he called the Diddy prosecutors a “six-pack of white women,” what’s your reaction?

I think what he was trying to say is in California, when you…do an ID [of suspects in a lineup], it’s a six-pack.

I was like, Oh, dad, I just can’t believe you. But I had tremendous respect for those prosecutors. He goes off. I can’t control what he says. The short version is: I cannot control what that man says.

I’ve been trying to make a niche for myself separate from my dad’s reputation and kind of make my own way. I’ve done a lot, I think, and I’ve tried to make my own way, but do it with my personality. You’ll never succeed if you’re trying to be someone that you’re not. I am much more measured, even-keeled. I do not have that pit bull personality. I’m just strong, precise.

Everyone’s entitled to a lawyer, but as I once read someone put it, it doesn’t mean you have to be that person’s lawyer. What do you think draws you to these people on a psychological level?
