Scotts Valley challenges Interior decision over disputed Vallejo casino gaming eligibility ruling

The Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians has returned to federal court after the U.S. Department of the Interior reversed course on whether its trust land in Vallejo, California, can be used for gaming.  The lawsuit, filed August 7 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, challenges the department’s July 30 decision that the roughly 160-acre property does not qualify as the tribe’s “restored lands” under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, known as IGRA. Interior reverses Vallejo casino approval after review finds historical connection

The U.S. Department of the Interior has reversed its approval of a proposed Scotts Valley casino in Vallejo, concluding after a 16-month review that the site does not qualify for gaming. The department announced Friday that the Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians had not shown the historical connection to the property required under federal law. Officials reconsidered the January 2025 approval after saying evidence had previously been improperly left out. The department had reached similar conclusions three times before the January approval, finding Scotts Valley lacked a “significant historical connection” to the proposed gaming site. The dispute continued while federal officials reviewed the decision. Scotts Valley pursued a temporary “preview casino” using modular buildings and Class II gaming machines near Interstate 80 and Highway 37. Four California tribes urged the band to wait for the federal review …

Land Rover’s fancy Freelander 8 EREV reveals ultra-luxe interior

Land Rover’s fancy Freelander 8 EREV reveals ultra-luxe interior

The best seat in Jaguar Land Rover’s newest SUV might not be the one behind the steering wheel! New interior images of the Freelander 8 EREV revealed on Chinese social media show a six-seat, ultra-luxury luxury cabin that looks less “seats six,” and more G6. First shown back in March, the new Freelander is Jaguar Land Rover’s global entry into the West’s red-hot luxury SUV market, where its retro-tastic styling and concept-car proportions will undoubtedly play well against its Teutonic competition. To be competitive in China, though, where less is still less and more is still more, the Freelander 8 needs to bring something a little extra to the party – and does it ever! A recent post on Chinese social media site Weibo, by Wenfei – The Wanderer, shows a feature-rich interior featuring eye-grabbing “Zero gravity” reclining captain’s chairs in the second row with heated, ventilated, and massaging heating surfaces. And, no matter how over the top and undignified you might think a chunky SUV decked out with airplane tables, a refrigerator, and purple …

Look Closer: Interior With Women Beside a Linen Cupboard

Pieter de Hooch was a contemporary of Johannes Vermeer in the Dutch city of Delft for a time; they painted similar subjects, in similar costumes, engaged in similarly quotidian activities. But they were quite different artists. De Hooch’s 1663 painting Interior With Women Beside a Linen Cupboard delivers exactly as little drama and numinous transcendence as its title promises. (It was formerly called The Good Housewife, which is hardly better.) The intrigue lies elsewhere. Explore the August 2026 Issue Check out more from this issue and find your next story to read. View More De Hooch’s picture is a puzzle box—an ingenious construction of openings and closings, insides and outsides, revelation and concealment. The sturdy wall behind the standing women with their crisply folded stack of linen is breached in three different places, extending our vista with sudden depth. On the right is a stairway twisting up and out of sight, on the left a window, and in the center a door. From the May 2023 issue: How to look at a Vermeer These last …
