I’m an iPhone user who switches to Gemini with Android Auto in the car – why I don’t regret it

Lance Whitney/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. As an iPhone owner, I primarily use Siri through CarPlay when I’m driving. Apple’s voice assistant can handle basic tasks like giving me turn-by-turn directions, making phone calls, sending texts, checking my calendar, creating reminders, and playing music and podcasts. For more challenging questions that stump Siri, I’ve been turning to ChatGPT. But since my Toyota Camry supports Android Auto as well, I wanted to see how Google Gemini would fare as my in-car assistant. With that in mind, I’ve been using Gemini with my Android phone when I’m behind the wheel. I’ve given it a variety of tasks to perform and questions to answer. Also: Does Android Auto make your phone overheat? Try these 8 ways to cool it down With Google’s AI, you can send emails and messages, ask for playlist suggestions, get information on local restaurants and businesses via Google Maps, set reminders, ask any question on your mind, play a game, listen to a story, and more. Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 is shaping up to be a significant release, blending advanced technology with strategic adjustments to its production and launch timeline. Scheduled for release in early 2027, the iPhone 18 introduces a range of upgrades in performance, design and functionality. However, its staggered launch, where the Pro models are expected to debut in late 2026, followed by the standard model months later, raises intriguing questions about Apple’s evolving approach. Below is a detailed look at the nine most notable changes you can expect from this highly anticipated device in a new video from Matt Talks Tech. 1. Shared Components with the iPhone 18e The iPhone 18 will share several critical components with its more affordable sibling, the iPhone 18e. Both models are expected to feature the A20 chip, an innovative processor and potentially the same battery system. This strategy allows Apple to streamline production while ensuring consistent performance across its lineup. For users, this means even the entry-level model will benefit from Apple’s latest technological advancements. However, this approach may blur the …

iPhone Driver’s License Feature Set to Expand to a 15th U.S. State

Apple’s digital driver’s license feature in the Wallet app is set to expand to Virginia, according to a person familiar with the matter. In select U.S. states, residents can add their driver’s license or state ID to the Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch, and then use it to display proof of identity or age at select airports and businesses, and in select apps. The feature has rolled out to 14 states so far, including Arkansas earlier this week, and it is also available in Puerto Rico. The other states are Arizona, Maryland, Colorado, Georgia, Ohio, Hawaii, California, Iowa, New Mexico, Montana, North Dakota, West Virginia, and Illinois. Now, Apple is preparing for the feature to go live in Virginia, the person said. However, we do not have an exact timeframe for availability. Towards the end of 2025, Virginia’s Department of Motor Vehicles said it planned to support the Apple Wallet’s digital ID feature in the coming months, so hopefully it goes live soon by this point. When the feature goes live, Virginia …

Everything We Know About OpenAI’s Planned iPhone Rival

Everything We Know About OpenAI’s Planned iPhone Rival

OpenAI is developing a smartphone intended to compete directly with the iPhone, in what appears to be a significant departure from the company’s previously stated hardware strategy. Here’s everything we know so far. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo published his findings in late April following supply chain checks, describing the device as an “AI agent phone” built around a continuous, context-aware interface rather than individual apps. Kuo argued that the smartphone is the only device that captures a user’s full real-time state, including location, activity, communication, and context, making it uniquely suited to AI agent inference. He said fully controlling both the operating system and the hardware is the only way for OpenAI to deliver a comprehensive AI agent service, and that AI agents will fundamentally shift how people interact with a phone, moving the focus from launching individual apps to completing tasks through a seamless interface. Specifications OpenAI’s phone is said to use a customized version of MediaTek’s Dimensity 9600 processor, built on TSMC’s N2P node in the second half of 2026. Kuo initially named both …

Apple’s $2,000 Foldable iPhone: Features and Launch Timeline

Apple is poised to make a significant impact in the foldable smartphone market with the highly anticipated iPhone Fold Ultra. Expected to launch in late 2026, this device represents Apple’s first foray into a competitive segment currently dominated by Samsung and Google. With its premium design, advanced features and seamless integration into Apple’s ecosystem, the iPhone Fold Ultra could redefine expectations for foldable devices and set new benchmarks for innovation and performance. The video below from Talks Daily Tech gives us more details about the iPhone Fold Ultra. Innovative Design and Display Features The iPhone Fold Ultra is rumored to feature a sophisticated book-style foldable design that emphasizes both aesthetic appeal and durability. Apple is reportedly working on advanced hinge technology, potentially inspired by Oppo’s liquid metal system, to address one of the most persistent challenges in foldable devices: the visible crease on the display. If successful, this innovation could provide users with a nearly seamless viewing experience, enhancing both functionality and visual appeal. The device is expected to include a 7.8-inch main display, ideal …

First Look at iPhone 18 Pro Color Options Revealed by Dummy Models

Leaker Sonny Dickson today shared images of iPhone 18 Pro dummy models in the device’s four rumored colors, offering the first real-world look at what to expect from the lineup visually. Corroborating previous rumors, the dummies show the ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ Max in Light Blue, Black, Silver, and Dark Cherry. Dickson said “Cherry will probably be the next hit, orange did very well.” Cosmic Orange was the signature color of the iPhone 17 Pro and proved popular with customers. Dark Cherry is expected to serve as the headline new color for the ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ models this year. The color has been in the rumor mill since at least February 2026, when Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reported that Apple was testing a deep red finish for the ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ and ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ Max. At the time, Gurman described the shade as a deep red, and separate reporting from a Chinese leaker later suggested the color was very likely to make the cut, partly because Android rivals were already prototyping the same shade. First look …

iPhone 18 Pro’s Camera Upgrade Will Cost Apple 50% More

iPhone 18 Pro’s Camera Upgrade Will Cost Apple 50% More

The iPhone 18 Pro and ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ Max’s all-new variable aperture lens will cost Apple 50% more than the camera unit used in current models, according to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Variable aperture has been one of the most persistent iPhone camera rumors of the past few years. Kuo first flagged the feature in late 2024, and it has since been corroborated by multiple reports and apparently entered production earlier this year. Unlike the fixed f/1.78 aperture found on every iPhone Pro from the 14 Pro through to the 17 Pro, a variable aperture will physically adjust the size of the lens opening to control how much light reaches the sensor, offering better exposure control and greater flexibility over depth of field. Kuo said that the component has an average selling price roughly 50% higher than the seven-element plastic lens Apple currently uses in the iPhone 17 Pro’s main camera. Sunny Optical set to supply Apple between 40 and 50% of orders Sunny Optical has also become a new compact camera module (CCM) …
