Isolated places struggle with a lack of year-round flights : NPR

Joe Castellana often has to drive several hours to complete the 120-mile trip from his home on the tip of Cape Cod in Provincetown, Mass., to Boston, especially during the summer. He can fly but commercial flights aren’t offered during the off-season. Provincetown’s ongoing effort to restore year-round air service is a microcosm of how difficult it can be to get commercial flights in remote places. Agata Storer for NPR hide caption toggle caption Agata Storer for NPR When Joe Castellana drives to Boston from his home in Provincetown, Massachusetts, at the very northern tip of Cape Cod, he considers himself lucky if the 120-mile ride takes two hours. That, he says, is “rare, very rare.” Because while Provincetown can be desolate in the winter, it’s a tourism hot spot in the summer, when its population of 3,500 people balloons to 60,000. And during that high season, the drive to the state capital can be an extremely long slog. “When I’ve had to go to Boston, let’s say for a 10 or 11 o’clock appointment …

Hantavirus fears soar – evacuated Britons ‘isolated’ next to families | UK | News

Passengers arrive at Arrowe Park Hospital in Wirral, Merseyside (Image: 2026 Anadolu/Getty Images) Concerns over a Hantavirus outbreak are mounting as 22 Britons evacuated from the rat-borne disease-stricken cruise ship MV Hondius are being housed at a Merseyside facility, just a short distance from families of premature babies and patients in intensive care. The Britons, who were evacuated on Monday (May 11) from the ill-fated vessel at the centre of an international healthcare scandal, have been required to undertake a 42-day isolation period upon returning to the UK, beginning with a 72-hour stay at Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral. While the medical evacuation came as a relief to those who had been stranded aboard the Dutch-flagged cruise liner, Merseyside residents have remained deeply uneasy, with anxieties growing that the deadly Hantavirus could breach containment measures. Outbreak fears struck particularly close to home for new mother Kim Childs, who has been residing in hospital accommodation near the Wirral facility for the past month to remain close to her prematurely born daughter, who continues to receive …

Ladies, “The Madison” proposes that our place is in an isolated cabin

Ladies, “The Madison” proposes that our place is in an isolated cabin

Michelle Pfeiffer is a gorgeous griever. “The Madison” makes the most of that with cinematography that lingers on her face as if it were part of Montana’s sun-kissed natural beauty. As New York society matron Stacy Clyburn, Pfeiffer seamlessly shifts through all the colors of inconsolability, from sallow brooding in one moment to red-faced weeping in the next, moving into verdant laughter a scene or two later. One imagines series creator Taylor Sheridan lapping up all that emotion like the thirsty elk Stacy’s husband Preston (Kurt Russell) watches from the window of his riverside cabin. Cities are squalid crime hives that need to be tamed or abandoned in the Sheridanverse, whereas small towns and Western vistas are quaint canvases fertile with possibility. On this, both urbanites and exurbanites agree. Preston is a corporate titan living out his lion in winter phase. One gets the sense that he made his money the old-fashioned way, which is never specified. Not that it matters. What’s important is that Preston is a man who values land, space and freedom, …

Head, 29, is part of the so-called “Filton 24”, two dozen pro-Palestine activists alleged to have raided the Bristol branch of Elbit Systems UK, a subsidiary of Israel’s largest weapons manufacturer, in August 2024. Less than a year later, after other activists broke into an airbase in Oxfordshire and allegedly spray-painted two Voyager refuelling and transport planes, the UK proscribed Palestine Action, the group which claimed responsibility for both incidents, as a “terrorist” organisation. “We were some of the first activists in a very long time to be treated as terrorists,” Head said. “That had a massive …

Mosaku, who was the only Black girl in her year, claimed she was mocked for her Manchester accent and didn’t get given any roles. “I found it very difficult,” the 39-year-old told The Times. “It was my first time away from home, everyone mimicked my Manchester accent, I was the only Black girl in my year and I didn’t get any parts. It felt isolating.” She added that she spent all her student loan on travelling home every weekend in her first year. Mosaku also questioned …

Trump isolated after trade escalation with Europe over Greenland

Donald Trump at the White House in Washington, on January 16, 2026. ALEX BRANDON / AP A carnivorous power is one that struggles to curb its appetite and recognize its own limitations. Since the start of 2026, almost one year after he returned to the White House, Donald Trump has sought to seize Venezuela’s oil, launch ground operations against drug cartels, notably in Mexico, decapitate the Iranian regime, and, finally, acquire Greenland, whether through persuasion or by force. He has pursued all these goals, all while more extensively deploying the United States military on the domestic front to help police hunt for undocumented migrants, especially in Minnesota. This dizzying display of power has even alarmed his own base, the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, not for reasons of principle or legality, but because he has dispersed his efforts and shown a lack of focus on Americans’ everyday lives.
