Salma Hayek and Pamela Anderson lead the best dressed stars at the Kering Foundation’s Dinner

Hollywood’s biggest names brought serious glamour to New York on Thursday night as Salma Hayek Pinault and Pamela Anderson led the arrivals at the Kering Foundation’s fifth annual Caring for Women Dinner. The star-studded benefit took place at The Pool in Manhattan on September 10, coinciding with the beginning of New York Fashion Week, and brought together some of the biggest names in film, fashion, music and sport. Salma and her husband, Kering chairman François-Henri Pinault, co-hosted the evening alongside Pamela Anderson, Simone Biles, Benicio Del Toro, Nacho Figueras, Dakota Johnson and artist Lorna Simpson. And while the evening had a serious purpose, the red carpet delivered no shortage of spectacular fashion. In ‘The Debut’, Julianne Moore Learns to Sing

In ‘The Debut’, Julianne Moore Learns to Sing

Mona starts out as a relatively ordinary woman who decides on a whim to audition for a local production of fictional musical Nosy Neighbors. With very little experience, she struggles to get the approval of Jerry, the demanding director (Paul Giamatti). When he pushes her to inhabit the character (an apartment building’s tool-belt-wielding superintendent), she takes that direction to the extreme, becoming a crazed method actor in a film that becomes more and more surreal and absurdist as it goes along. When Moore was sent Eisenberg’s script, she was in awe. “It’s one of the best scripts I’ve ever read in my entire life,” she says. “On page 30, I stood up and had to walk around my dining room for a second and catch my breath.” Speaking of breath, the film’s musical numbers required Moore to do something Dear Evan Hansen hadn’t: sing live, badly, in front of seasoned stage actors and singers. The supporting cast includes Tony nominee Colton Ryan, Tony winner Bonnie Milligan, singer-song-writer Halle Bailey, and stage legend and two-time Tony …

Julianne Moore, Paul Giamatti in Theater Comedy

Julianne Moore, Paul Giamatti in Theater Comedy

When Mona (Julianne Moore) tells a friend she’s auditioned for a production of a show called Nosy Neighbors at their local theater, he admits he’s never liked musicals. They just don’t feel authentic, he explains, the way the characters are always bursting into song. Who does that? Well, no one, not even in the musical-loving The Debut. But among the first of the film’s sly tricks is that it builds a world in which it feels like people could, where in fact it feels more unnatural that they don’t. Blessed with swing-for-the-fences brio and, in Moore and Paul Giamatti, a leading duo capable of navigating every one of those wild turns, the latest feature by Jesse Eisenberg makes for a frequently hilarious journey into the mind of an overly committed actor — even if, in the end, it seems unsure quite what it wants to say about the self-destructive pursuit of artistic perfection. The Debut The Bottom Line A very good time, if not necessarily a profound one. Venue: Telluride Film FestivalCast: Julianne Moore, Paul …

‘The Debut’ Has 7 Songs Written by Jesse Eisenberg, Getting Oscar Push

‘The Debut’ Has 7 Songs Written by Jesse Eisenberg, Getting Oscar Push

The Debut, Jesse Eisenberg’s third directorial feature, just had its world premiere screening at the Telluride Film Festival. Eisenberg not only directed the A24 film, which stars Oscar winner Julianne Moore as a housewife cast in a community theater production, but, The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively report, he also wrote all seven of the original songs featured in it — accounting for nearly an hour of music — and one of those tunes, “This City May Have Chewed Me Up (But It Hasn’t Spit Me Out),” which Moore performs in the film, will be the focus of a best original song awards push. While there remains a possibility that A24 will opt to submit other songs from the film for Oscar consideration, as well — studios can submit up to three, but no more than two can be nominated — the company regards “This City May Have Chewed Me Up (But It Hasn’t Spit Me Out)” as its top prospect and priority. In addition to Eisenberg, others who have written or co-written songs that are in contention this …

Julianne Moore Gives Feminist Battle Cry at Kering’s Women in Motion Dinner

Julianne Moore Gives Feminist Battle Cry at Kering’s Women in Motion Dinner

Feminism is always the main course at Kering’s Women in Motion dinner, but no one was expecting Julianne Moore to unleash a battle cry of a speech during what is typically a glamorous but uneventful annual event at the Cannes Film Festival. “This is something that makes me crazy: There’s a cultural assumption, particularly in the United States, that women’s stories are less interesting or smaller, or that if we’re at the center of a narrative we need to be stronger or accomplishing something great or doing something particularly male if we want men to watch us,” said Moore, accepting an award for her career and her advocacy for gender representation in film.  “And I think that’s untrue,” she continued, “because I think, ‘What about the female audience? What do they want to watch?’” Moore was dressed in a high-necked white silk jumpsuit, and carrying a clutch the size of a briefcase also covered in white feathers, which had the effect of making her seem like a very luxe astronaut visiting this tent in a …
