“There are no good options”: Kansas’ new driver license law puts transgender Kansans in a bind

Transgender people in Kansas have been placed in a tight spot by a controversial new law. Republican state legislators passed a law invalidating driver’s licenses and birth certificates that had been changed to reflect a preferred gender in February. The law, currently facing a lawsuit from trans Kansans represented by the ACLU, invalidated nearly 2,000 licenses in the state and made it illegal for transgender individuals to use restrooms aligned with their gender identity on government property. ACLU attorney Harper Seldin told Salon that the law left transgender Kansans with “no good options.” “This law is putting people in an impossible position,” he said. The plaintiffs requested a temporary restraining order to bar the law from taking effect while challenges make their way through the courts. That request was denied by Douglas County District Judge James McCabria last week. In his six-page ruling, McCabria said the plaintiffs had failed to provided evidence of harm should the law take effect. “The conclusion became self-evident — this Court simply does not have the information the law requires to …

Wichita man accused of running proxy betting scheme at Kansas casino

A Wichita man who worked at the Kansas Star Casino is now facing several criminal charges after state investigators accused him of running an illegal proxy betting operation inside the Sumner County facility. Attorney General Kris W. Kobach announced Tuesday (February 24) that Quoc “Kevin” Phu Lam, 47, had been arrested following an investigation into what authorities describe as proxy betting. According to court filings, investigators believe Lam acted as a go-between, placing wagers for other people instead of those individuals making bets themselves. Jury Awards .3 Million to Foster Teen’s Family After His Death at Juvenile Intake Center

Jury Awards $8.3 Million to Foster Teen’s Family After His Death at Juvenile Intake Center

Jurors have awarded $8.3 million to the family of a Kansas foster teen who died in 2021 after he was held facedown for 39 minutes in a juvenile intake center while in the throes of a mental health crisis. Five juvenile officers in Sedgwick County either used excessive force on Cedric “C.J.” Lofton or failed to intervene, the jurors decided Wednesday after a trial in federal court in Wichita. John Marrese, an attorney for Lofton’s brother and the estate, said Thursday that he was pleased that jurors rejected arguments that the death stemmed from “excited delirium,” a controversial diagnosis discredited by major medical associations. Critics say it was often used to justify excessive force by police. “It’s a good development in the world of prolonged prone restraint in terms of a jury acknowledging how dangerous it is and the fact that it can be fatal,” Marrese said. Sedgwick County, which employed the officers named in the suit, said in a news release Wednesday that it was reviewing the verdict and discussing next steps. Lofton died …

Trump Officials Loosen Strings on Federal Education Money for Iowa. More States Could Follow

Trump Officials Loosen Strings on Federal Education Money for Iowa. More States Could Follow

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is giving Iowa more power to decide how it spends its federal education money, signing off on a proposal that is expected to be the first of many as conservative states seek new latitude from a White House promising to “return education to the states.” Iowa was the first state to apply for an exemption from certain spending rules after Education Secretary Linda McMahon invited states to request the flexibility last year. Such waivers have been offered for years but are finding new interest as Trump officials leverage all available tools to remove the federal government from local education. McMahon formally approved Iowa’s plan Wednesday at an event in the state. Indiana and Kansas have also applied to be exempted from certain parts of federal education law, and leaders of other states have expressed interest. McMahon told The Associated Press that the new flexibility will free up time and money now devoted to ensuring compliance with federal rules. With fewer strings attached, states can pool their federal dollars toward …

Missouri senator blocks Kansas City Chiefs from running a sportsbook ahead of stadium move

Missouri Senator Nick Schroer has filed legislation that would block the Kansas City Chiefs from operating a sportsbook in the state. This comes after the football team confirmed plans to move into a new stadium across the state border in Kansas. Senator Schroer’s SJR 109 was pre-filed on December 31 and proposes a constitutional amendment to remove the Chiefs from the official list of teams legally allowed to run sportsbooks. State Sen. Nick Schroer said he will be filing legislation this week “to get rid of the asinine classification of the Chiefs as Missouri's official NFL team" and will work to get rid of "the asinine ‘handshake’ border-war resolution" with Kansas. #moleghttps://t.co/aqnYJJ9WSZ — Jason Hancock (@J_Hancock) December 22, 2025 While it’s still pending approval by the Senate and the House, the bill would go up for vote among the citizens of Missouri, likely either in the November 2026 general election or at an election held for this issue in particular. The bill’s wording repeals the section that allows sports teams that are members of professional …
