The U.S. Secret Service said in a statement late Saturday that, according to a preliminary investigation, the person approached a checkpoint shortly after 6 p.m. ET, “removed a weapon from his bag and began firing at posted officers.” Officers returned fire and hit the suspect, who was transported to an area hospital, where he later died, according to the Secret Service. A bystander was struck, but a law enforcement official said it wasn’t clear whether that person was struck by the suspect’s initial bullets or those fired subsequently by officers. Secret Service said none of its officers were injured, and that President Donald Trump — who was at the White House at the time — was not “impacted.” Evidence of the shooting was visible on a sidewalk just …

Kash Patel’s clothing brand website shut down after reports it was hacked

The merchandise website of FBI director Kash Patel was taken offline on Friday after reports that it had been hijacked by hackers trying to infect visitors with malware, as first reported by Straight Arrow News. As of this writing, the website of Based Apparel is offline. On Thursday, an X user who goes by Debbie posted that the brand’s website apparently had malware on it, in particular an infostealer, a type of malicious software designed to infect victims and steal their credentials and passwords. A security researcher later analyzed the malware.  Brand Apparel could not be reached for comment. TechCrunch emailed a Gmail address previously associated with Patel, but we have not received an answer.   This was not a good week for security for MAGA-associated business ventures.  On Friday, President Trump’s cell phone provider and maker of Trump Mobile confirmed that the company left customers’ personal information exposed online, including names, email addresses, mailing addresses, cell numbers, and order identifiers. The confirmation came days after a researcher alerted two YouTubers who had purchased Trump Mobile’s …

Kash Patel appeals dismissal of Figliuzzi defamation suit

FBI Director Kash Patel testifies before a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., U.S., March 18, 2026. Kevin Lamarque | Reuters FBI Director Kash Patel on Thursday filed an appeal of the recent dismissal of his defamation lawsuit against former FBI official Frank Figliuzzi. Patel had sued Figliuzzi in Houston federal court, alleging that the former FBI counterintelligence assistant director defamed him in a May 2, 2025, interview on MS NOW’s “Morning Joe” by saying Patel had “been visible at nightclubs far more than he has been on the seventh floor of” FBI headquarters. U.S. District Court Judge George Hanks Jr., in his April 21 decision dismissing Patel’s lawsuit, said that Figliuzzi’s statement was “rhetorical hyperbole that cannot constitute defamation.” “Accordingly, Dir. Patel has failed to state a claim against Figliuzzi, and his lawsuit must be dismissed,” Hanks wrote. Hanks dismissed Patel’s suit a day after the FBI director filed an unrelated $250 million defamation lawsuit in D.C. federal court against The Atlantic magazine. The suit relates to an Atlantic article …

Kash Patel’s girlfriend lashes out at ‘sick’ report suggesting she was holding another person’s hand after shots rang out at correspondents’ dinner

FBI Director Kash Patel’s girlfriend has lashed out at a report suggesting she held another man’s hand after the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner. The New York Times published, but later edited, a report suggesting musician Alexis Wilkins was spotted holding hands with someone who wasn’t Patel inside a private holding room after shots rang out at the event, according to the Daily Mail. “I was only ever holding Kash’s hand; anything to suggest otherwise is false. It is sick for the New York Times to have used this time after a perceived active shooting as a political tool. They will stop at nothing to push a narrative out that’s damaging to people they’ve determined they dislike,” Wilkins told the Daily Mail. When reached for comment, a NYT spokesperson told The Independent: “A Times journalist on the scene of the Correspondents’ Dinner accurately reported during the breaking news events of the evening, including Ms. Wilkins’ sheltering in a room while holding a security officer’s hand.” “This reporting was published in a live …

Cheriss May | Nurphoto | Getty Images Former FBI Director James Comey appeared in Alexandria, Virginia, federal court on Wednesday, a day after a two-count indictment charged him with threatening to kill President Donald Trump last May by posting on Instagram a photo of seashells arranged to form the message “86 47” on a North Carolina beach. Comey’s lawyer, Patrick Fitzgerald, told Magistrate Judge William Fitzpatrick that he intends to file a motion to dismiss the case on the grounds of vindictive prosecution. Fitzgerald had filed such a motion when Comey was indicted in another federal criminal case last fall, which was later tossed out on other grounds. Fitzgerald, a former top federal prosecutor, asked the judge about preserving inflammatory statements about Comey that have been made by both Trump and the Department of Justice. The judge, Fitzpatrick, pointedly referenced the prior case when he said Comey …

Trump reclassifies state-licensed medical marijuana in historic shift

Get the Well Enough newsletter with Harry Bullmore for tips on living a healthier, happier and longer life Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore President Donald Trump’s acting attorney general has signed an order reclassifying state-licensed medical marijuana as a less-dangerous drug in a major policy shift. Advocates have long argued that cannabis should never have been treated like heroin by the federal government. The order, signed by Todd Blanche, does not legalize marijuana for medical or recreational use under U.S. law but it does change the way it’s regulated. It shifts licensed medical marijuana from Schedule I — reserved for drugs without medical use and with high potential for abuse — to the less strictly regulated Schedule III. It also gives licensed medical marijuana operators a major tax break and eases some barriers to researching cannabis. Trump told his administration in December to work as quickly as possible to reclassify marijuana. On Saturday, as the Republican president signed an unrelated executive order about psychedelics, …

Daniel Heuer | Bloomberg | Getty Images A Houston federal court judge on Tuesday dismissed a lawsuit by FBI Director Kash Patel alleging that former FBI official Frank Figliuzzi defamed him by saying Patel last year had “been visible at nightclubs far more than he has been on the seventh floor of” the bureau’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. “The Court finds that Figliuzzi’s statement is rhetorical hyperbole that cannot constitute defamation,” U.S. District Court Judge George Hanks Jr. wrote in his decision. “Accordingly, Dir. Patel has failed to state a claim against Figliuzzi, and his lawsuit must be dismissed.” The dismissal came a day after Patel filed an unrelated $250 million defamation lawsuit in D.C. federal court against The Atlantic magazine over a new article that alleged he has abused alcohol.
