Federal Court Asked to Keep Trump’s Name Off Kennedy Center

Federal Court Asked to Keep Trump’s Name Off Kennedy Center

A federal court received an emergency appeal Thursday seeking to block the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts from restoring President Donald Trump’s name to the building.  The Kennedy Center board, led by Trump and largely composed of his allies, voted earlier this month to engrave the president’s name beneath the signage on the venue’s facade, which would read: “The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated By President Donald J. Trump.” If the newly established Trump Kennedy Center Fund reaches $100 million the board would approve a second inscription reading: “Endowed by the Trump Kennedy Center Fund.”  Related Articles Thursday’s emergency request was filed by Rep. Joyce Beatty, an Ohio Democrat and ex officio member of the Kennedy Center board, who has led the effort to oppose Trump’s rebranding of the center. In a statement to The Hill, her legal representatives described the board’s actions as “clear violations” of a prior court order. In May, US District Judge Christopher Cooper ruled that the board could not rename the …

Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio, filed an emergency motion late Thursday evening asking a federal judge to stop the trustees of the Kennedy Center from putting President Trump’s name back on the front of the arts complex. She also asked the judge to stop the trustees’ plan to rename the physical site of the center the “President Donald J. Trump Plaza.” If the board’s plan moves forward in full, Trump’s name would appear on the entryway sign twice, and would appear on a third location on the grounds. “It’s deja vu all over again,” Beatty’s lawyers wrote to Judge Christopher Cooper in their argument, saying that only Congress can change the name of the center, which by Congressional mandate is …

Board Won’t Add Trump’s Name To Kennedy Center Before Sept. 8, Filing Says

Authored by Matthew Vadum via The Epoch Times, The Kennedy Center’s board told federal court that it will not try to put President Donald Trump’s name back on the building’s facade before at least Sept. 8, giving both sides time to discuss a new resolution opponents say flouts a prior court order. In a joint status report filed late on Aug. 18, attorneys for the center and the U.S. Department of Justice said the board would delay enforcing the so-called recognition resolution the board approved on Aug. 13. The measure stated that the board would add an inscription reading, “Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump,” and rename the plaza in front of the building after the president. Another resolution approved the same day provided that the center be closed for two years for renovations. This means that some of the institution’s high-profile programming, such as the Kennedy Center Honors and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, would have to be presented off-site. The National Symphony Orchestra said days ago that it would divide …

The signage proposed by the center’s board would eventually read: “The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts, Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump, Endowed by the Trump Kennedy Center Fund.” The last line would be added only if the fund reaches $100 million in donations. Additionally, the board is seeking to rename the physical grounds of the arts center “President Donald J. Trump Plaza.” The Kennedy Center said it would not try to add Trump’s name back on the building before Sept. 8. In its filing, the center also argued that the much-discussed tarp that has been covering …

RFK Jr.’s Son Conor Kennedy Put on Russia’s Most Wanted List

Conor Kennedy, the son of U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has been placed on Russia’s international wanted list after traveling to Ukraine in 2022 to fight with the country’s International Legion. A Moscow court on Aug. 12 authorized Kennedy’s arrest in absentia on charges of mercenarism, according to Russian state media outlet TASS. If detained, Kennedy faces a sentence of seven to ten years in prison. Ukraine publication Kyiv Post reported on the sentencing this week. Despite having no prior military experience, Kennedy traveled to Ukraine without informing his family and enlisting with Ukraine’s International Legion. He served on the northeastern frontline for roughly two and a half months before returning to the United States to resume law studies at Georgetown University. He later described the experience in an Instagram post, writing that he had been deeply moved by events in Ukraine and knew immediately he wanted to help. He said he told almost no one where he was going or his real name, not wanting to be treated differently. RFK Jr., now …

Kennedy Center Votes To Put Trump’s Name On Building, Close For Renovations

Authored by Jackson Richman via The Epoch Times, The John F. Kennedy Center’s board voted on Aug. 13 to close the venue for renovations and place President Donald Trump’s name on the building. “In its meeting today, the board voted to change the front of the building’s facade to read ‘The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated By President Donald J. Trump,‘ and renamed the physical site ’the President Donald J. Trump Plaza,’” said Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio), an ex officio member on the iconic performing arts center’s board. The final decision, however, will be up to U.S. District Judge Christopher R. Cooper. While the board voted to close the main building for renovations, the REACH, a separate building on the campus, will stay open for limited programming. It is unclear how long the renovations will take. The Epoch Times has reached out to the Kennedy Center for comment. President Donald Trump announced in February that the Kennedy Center would be closed for a two-year renovation. Cooper blocked the …

Andrew Leyden | Bloomberg | Getty Images The Kennedy Center’s board of trustees voted Thursday to inscribe President Donald Trump’s name on its building facade, setting up a renewed legal battle over changes to the Washington, D.C., performing arts facility. Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio, called the new vote “a transparent effort to circumvent” a judge’s order in May that Trump’s name be removed from the Kennedy Center. Beatty and her lawyers detailed the vote on that and other items in a press release. “I will continue to fight for this treasured national monument,” said Beatty, whose lawsuit in D.C. federal court led to the order stripping Trump’s name from the center. Trump’s name was removed in June. The Kennedy Center’s board, of which Beatty is an ex-officio member, voted Thursday to redo the facade so that it would read: “The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated By President Donald J. Trump.” The board, which …

Donald Trump Wants His Name Back on the Kennedy Center

Donald Trump Wants His Name Back on the Kennedy Center

Donald Trump just won’t let go of his plans for the Kennedy Center. Less than three months after a federal judge ordered the president’s name stripped from the national arts center, Trump’s handpicked trustees have found a new way to try to put him back on the building. During a board meeting today, they voted in favor of a resolution that would return the president’s name to the building’s facade. It would read: The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing ArtsRestored and Renovated by President Donald Trump I obtained a copy of the resolution, which contains one more edit to the Kennedy Center’s marble edifice. Once an obscure endowment known as the Trump Kennedy Center Fund reaches $100 million in donations, the resolution would expand the proposed signage’s language to include a third line: Endowed by the Trump Kennedy Center Fund. The vote, which was not included on the agenda distributed before the meeting, will likely drag out a legal fight over Trump’s transformation of the center and deepen an institutional crisis that …

Kennedy Board Votes to Inscribe Trump’s Name on Building

The board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts voted Thursday to close the center for renovations for a second time, while keeping a smaller, separate theater open. This week’s vote marked a dramatic escalation in the legal battle over the historic center: the Trump-allied board also moved to inscribe the president’s name beneath the signage—a direct rebuke of a May federal court order that had blocked both the closure and a name change. According to the New York Times, the board has approved an inscription beneath the center’s name reading: “Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump.” Related Articles The Kennedy Center board voted last December to change the institution’s name to include Trump and to add his name to the marble facade, triggering a financial crisis as performers began dropping from the roster in protest. In the ensuing months, the White House, federal courts, and Washington preservationists have been locked in a legal standoff over where the authority to rename the center lies. Legal experts noted the name change …
