Trump Says He Will Press Israel to Hold Back After Iran Retaliates for Beirut Attack

By Alexander Cornwell, Parisa Hafezi and Bo Erickson BEIRUT/DUBAI/NEW BRUNSWICK, New Jersey, June 7 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday he would tell Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to strike back after Iran fired a salvo of missiles at Israeli targets in retaliation for an attack on the outskirts of Beirut, news outlet Axios reported. Iran has long said any peace deal with the U.S. would depend on a ceasefire also holding in Lebanon, which Israel invaded in March in pursuit of Iran-backed Hezbollah fighters who fired rockets and drones across the border in solidarity with Tehran. But Israel ‌earlier on Sunday launched strikes in the Beirut area for ‌the first time since the U.S. announced a truce plan for Lebanon last week. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they had targeted Ramat David air base, near Nazareth. The Israeli military said it identified missiles launched from Iran and that its defense systems had intercepted them.  Trump, who was spending the weekend at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, and Netanyahu spoke …

Iran launches ballistic missiles at Bahrain, Kuwait after US hits its radar sites

Iran launched a salvo of missiles at US allies Bahrain and Kuwait on Saturday after fresh American strikes, drawing a furious response from the Gulf monarchies and further straining a fragile truce. Weeks of indirect talks marked by tit-for-tat threats and sporadic exchanges of fire have failed to secure a deal to end the Middle East war or reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for Gulf oil and gas shipments. Iran’s foreign ministry said the US early Saturday attacked surveillance facilities on Qeshm Island and near Sirik that it said were used to protect borders and “ensure the security of navigation in international waters.” Tehran called the attack a violation of the fragile ceasefire. US Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces first shot down four Iranian attack drones launched toward the strait. It then struck the Iranian coastal surveillance radar sites, CENTCOM said. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said early Saturday they had responded by targeting “enemy bases in the area” with missiles.  The Revolutionary Guard said it targeted the Ali Al Salem air base, which …

The missiles fired Sunday night at 11 p.m. ET were successfully intercepted and no U.S. personnel were harmed, CENTCOM said in an X post. “U.S. Central Command remains vigilant and will continue to protect our forces from Iranian aggression while supporting the ongoing ceasefire,” the post said. Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry in a statement condemned the attacks, calling them a “dangerous escalation” and asserting the country’s right to take necessary measures to hold Iran “fully responsible for these heinous aggressions.” The missile attacks came after CENTCOM conducted “self-defense strikes on Iranian radar and command and control sites for drones” over the weekend in response to prior Iranian aggression, including “the shootdown of …
