Laura Kuenssberg Confronts Iranian Ambassador Over Protester Killings

Laura Kuenssberg has confronted a senior Iranian officials over his government’s killing of thousands of protesters. Up to 36,500 civilians are estimated to have been murdered by the regime following by ordinary people an uprising in January. On the BBC this morning, Kuenssberg asked Seyed Ali Mousavi, Iran’s ambassador to the UK, how he could justify his government’s brutality towards its own people. She said: “Since we last spoke, your government has killed thousands of its own people in the streets who had the courage to stand up to protest against the suffering that they have been experiencing at the hands of the regime. “Thousands of people were killed. How on earth do you justify that, ambassador?” Ali Mousavi admitted Iran “has our own problems”, which he blamed on western sanctions imposed on the country. And he insisted all Iranians were now united following the military action launched on the country by America and Israel. He said: “Our people are in a very painful and sensitive period of time, but they are supporting the government …

Call the Midwife’s Laura Main and Helen George are this week’s cover stars

Call the Midwife’s Laura Main and Helen George are this week’s cover stars

This week’s RT is a bittersweet issue. Bittersweet because it marks the end of the latest series of Call the Midwife. It’s a drama that has anchored Sunday nights each winter since 2012, and has been lapped up at “Law Towers” from the start. Your letters to RT suggest we are far from alone. Few series inspire such loyalty and such affection. We spoke to showrunner Heidi Thomas about her decision to “pause” the show and what it means to draw breath after 15 years. Thankfully, this is not a full stop. With a Second World War prequel plus a feature film in development, the world of Call the Midwife – or CTM, as we affectionately call it in the office (publishing, like the Army, does love an abbreviation) – looks set to evolve rather than disappear. The timing feels apt: Sunday 8 March is International Women’s Day, and also in this issue we’ve asked brilliant women writers to interview some of the actresses and authors behind this week’s other eagerly awaited dramas, from the …

‘American Classic’ review: Kevin Kline and Laura Linney’s theater love letter

‘American Classic’ review: Kevin Kline and Laura Linney’s theater love letter

The lovely, funny “American Classic,” premiering Sunday on MGM+, is a love letter to theater, community and community theater. Kevin Kline plays Richard Bean, a narcissistic stage actor. He’s famous enough to be opening on Broadway in “King Lear,” but he has to be pushed onstage and is forgetting lines. After he drunkenly assails a hostile New York Times critic — caught on video, of course — he’s suspended from the play, and his agent (Tony Shalhoub) advises him to get out of town and lay low until the heat’s off, as they used to say in the gangster movies. Learning that his mother (Jane Alexander, acting royalty, in film clips) has died, Richard heads back to his small Pennsylvania hometown, where his family — all actors, like the Barrymores, but no longer acting — owns a once-celebrated theater. To Richard’s horror, it has, for want of income, become a dinner theater, hosting touring productions of “Nunsense” and “Forever Plaid” instead of the great stage works on which he cut his teeth. Brother Jon (Jon …

Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Laura Dern has reflected on the dangerous aftermath of appearing in Ellen DeGeneres’ landmark coming-out episode of her sitcom, Ellen. In April 1997, the Marriage Story actor played DeGeneres’s love interest for a revelatory, two-part episode, in which DeGeneres came out as gay, making her the first lead queer character in U.S. TV history. Speaking to Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers on their Las Culturistas podcast, Dern said it took “years” for the world to see the cultural impact of the TV moment, despite the cast expecting an immediate positive reaction from viewers. When the episodes aired, Dern said that the assumption was, “You’re going to do this thing and thank God people will wake up, love their relatives and their neighbors, see them, …

Laura Kim Toasts to Lunar New Year With Her Monse Partner Fernando García and a Mah-Jong Cake

On Wednesday night, fashion designer Laura Kim invited her nearest and dearest over to her Lower East Side apartment for her version of a Lunar New Year celebration. There were a few deviations from ancient traditions—Kim’s dinner, which she prepared herself, came with custom cocktails incorporating cognac from Maison Martell and a guest list that combined over 4 million Instagram followers. Kim, wearing a fuzzy pink sweater and studded jeans, was joined by Fernando García, her design partner at Monse and, until recently, Oscar de la Renta, influencer and restaurateur Ezra J. William, Max Mara’s SVP of marketing and communications Judgie Graham, Felicia Quaning, and socialite and model Nicky Hilton Rothschild. They all took off their fashionable shoes and put on slippers that Kim laid out in her entryway as they entered her home. García and Kim with the mah-jong dessert from Empire Cakes. Laura Loomer must resume payments to Muslim advocacy group, judge says

Laura Loomer must resume payments to Muslim advocacy group, judge says

(RNS) — A federal judge ordered far-right influencer Laura Loomer to resume her monthly $1,200 payments to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which Loomer was originally ordered to pay in a settlement reached after her failed lawsuit against the Muslim advocacy group. After multiple appeals, the ruling affirms Loomer’s requirement to pay CAIR and its Florida chapter the remaining balance of a nearly $125,000 settlement from a lawsuit the influencer brought against the organization in August 2019, alleging that CAIR Florida had conspired with the social media company then known as Twitter to ban her from that platform. Loomer had stopped the payments in December 2025 after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued an executive order designating CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood, an Egypt-based Islamist organization, as foreign terrorist organizations. The governor had written that providing contract, employment or funds to these organizations would be considered “material support.” On Thursday (Jan. 29), the court denied Loomer’s request to cease payments based on DeSantis’ executive order. Judge Bruce E. Reinhart of the Southern District of Florida, who …
