The losers and winners of Hungary’s seismic election – POLITICO

Independent journalists have faced an uphill battle in Hungary as Orbán took control of 80 percent of media in the country. Despite that, independent reporters became a decisive factor in the final outcome. They uncovered how the Orbán government worked to undermine the opposition via the country’s secret services, and obtained details of phone calls between Budapest and the Kremlin, discussing sensitive EU matters. Doctors will also be a winner, as Magyar has promised to increase public investment by €1 billion a year. That pledge comes after a decade of underspending in the health sector that left long waiting lists, dilapidated hospitals, lack of equipment and, ultimately, caused a brain drain, President of the Hungarian Medical Chamber Péter Almos told POLITICO. Orbán’s government has in the past unleashed billboard campaigns blaming doctors for the system’s deficiencies. ‘I lost a $3m brand deal. I was like: OK, losers!’ Swedish pop provocateur Zara Larsson on fame, fun and fighting the power | Music

On a warm spring day, Brooklyn’s century-old Paramount theatre has been transformed into a base camp for all things Zara Larsson. Stage techs scurry past entourage members, managers furiously tap smartphones and various figures patiently await their moment with the Swedish superstar. Down a plushly carpeted flight of stairs, Zara Larsson is on all fours, saying “puss puss” (Swedish for “kiss kiss”) into a camera. Despite all the craziness around her, she is locked in, wearing electric-blue stockings, tangerine booty shorts and a tiny blazer that makes her look like Malibu Barbie at graduation. A man powers up a leaf-blower, sending Larsson’s blond hair flying. After hitting a few poses, she tippy-taps over in maribou-trimmed stilettos and offers me a can of water. “Cheers!” she says as we clink. Larsson’s career is moving at lightning speed and there’s not a moment to waste, or to indulge in much celebration beyond designer mineral water. In the week we meet, her irresistible spot on PinkPantheress’s Stateside has risen to No 1 on Billboard’s global charts after Olympic …

Have you seen Louis Theroux’s new Netflix documentary, Inside the Manosphere? If you have, you’ll probably have some strong opinions about it. My colleague Adam White recently bemoaned the fact that Theroux inadvertently gave these toxic men an extra boost to their platforms simply by making the documentary, while a friend who’s a TV critic on BBC’s Must Watch reviewed the show and said she felt Theroux wasn’t asking the kind of direct, probing – and brave – questions he used to ask in his previous documentaries; that he gave them, effectively, an easy ride. Emma Flint pointed out the irony of people only taking the dangers of misogyny …

Winners and losers in France’s municipal elections – POLITICO

Winners and losers in France’s municipal elections – POLITICO

Eric Ciotti: The new far-right mayor of Nice, the unofficial capital of the French Riviera, tried two years ago to strike a deal with Marine Le Pen’s National Rally as the head of the conservative Les Républicains. He locked himself in party headquarters to prevent a coup, but the farcical effort failed and he was booted from the movement. That gamble has paid off, handing him the keys to France’s fifth-largest city. His win is also a partial victory for Le Pen and Jordan Bardella’s party, which now has a powerful ally, but Ciotti’s triumph was also the result of a local rivalry. His advocacy for mass privatizations and admiration for Argentina’s chainsaw-wielding libertarian President Javier Milei also doesn’t align with Le Pen’s self-description as being “neither left nor right” and defense of parts of the welfare state. The National Rally: Party President Bardella said the National Rally “achieved the greatest breakthrough in its entire history.” Le Pen said it won dozens of cities. Teyana Taylor Slams ‘Sore Losers’ After Amy Madigan Reaction Criticism

Teyana Taylor Slams ‘Sore Losers’ After Amy Madigan Reaction Criticism

Teyana Taylor doesn’t care if you don’t like the way she celebrates her fellow creatives who just won an Oscar. The actress, who was nominated for best supporting actress at the 98th Academy Awards for her role as Perfidia in One Battle After Another, took to X on Monday to slam those who have grown “comfortable being sore losers.” Her comments came after she received criticism for being excited about her fellow nominees, specifically when she jumped out of her seat to cheer for Weapons star Amy Madigan, who ended up taking home the Oscar in the best supporting actress category on Sunday. Related Stories “I knew from the first hour something was off,” one person wrote on X about Taylor, to which she replied, “The world holds so much misery that miserable hearts forget the face of happiness.” The actress continued, “They grow comfortable being sore losers, so when they see real sportsmanship it unsettles them! like holy water touching a demon. Because clapping for someone else’s victory requires something many people never learned…how to win …

Primary Losers: Crockett Cries ‘Disenfranchisement’, Crenshaw Crushed

Rep. Jasmine Crockett has just lost her Democratic Senate primary in Texas to Democratic state lawmaker James Talarico, who will now try to become the first Democrat in nearly 40 years to win a Senate election in Texas. He will face the Republican winner between longtime incumbent Sen. John Cornyn and Texas AG Ken Paxton.  Crockett, a racist, who says that entering the USA illegally is ‘not a crime’ and is under FEC investigation for suspicious ActBlue donations, says she’s going to file a lawsuit challenging the results due to alleged confusion among some voters in Dallas County over where they were supposed to vote.  Speaking with supporters Tuesday night, she says that because of the confusion, “people have been disenfranchised,” and that the outcome of the race wouldn’t be known until Dallas County’s votes are counted.  As noted above, Cornyn and Paxton will advance to a runoff in the Texas Republican primary race, after neither candidate manged to receive 50% of the vote.  Crenshaw Loses Rep. How extreme flooding in Somerset has created birdlife winners and losers | Somerset

The Somerset Levels flood regularly – but this year, after very heavy winter rains, the fields and moors are overflowing with water. So what effect does this have on wintering birds? Like most extreme weather events, there are winners and losers. Huge flocks of gulls are gathering in the flooded fields to feed, with scarcer Mediterranean and little gulls joining the regular black-headed, herring and common varieties. These have attracted a white-tailed eagle from the Isle of Wight reintroduction project, although it does not appear to have caught any victims yet. Lapwings are more visible than usual, as high depths of water on some of the nature reserves mean they are unable to feed, so must move off into shallower areas to do so. But spare a thought for the local barn owls. They usually hunt over damp, grassy fields, especially less intensively farmed areas with longer vegetation and plenty of voles. Now the fields are too wet for the rodents and because barn owls’ soft feathers are not waterproof, they are unable to hunt …

Starmer, Badenoch and McSweeney: Who are the winners and losers of the Mandelson-Epstein scandal? | Politics News

Sir Keir Starmer and the Labour high command may be relieved that Peter Mandelson has quit the House of Lords. But for both the prime minister and the soon-to-be ex-peer, their humiliation and torment may be about to get even worse. Mr Mandelson faces a full-blown probe by the Met’s specialist crime team into allegations of misconduct in public office, for which the maximum penalty is life imprisonment. It’s that serious. In an interview with The Times carried out last week but published on Monday, Mandelson referred to a “handful of misguided historical emails, which I deeply regret sending”. On other claims, Lord Mandelson questioned the authenticity of the documents, citing false claims he had a US social security number, questionable US-dollar cheque payments into UK banks, incorrect beneficiary details, and multiple basic errors in …

“Sore loser’s crusade”: Lawmakers react to FBI raid on Georgia election center

Lawmakers and state officials in Georgia are sounding off in the wake of a Wednesday FBI raid on an Atlanta-area election center. The raid was launched in hopes of finding documentation and records related to the 2020 election. Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., called a “sore loser’s crusade” by President Donald Trump. “From Minnesota to Georgia, on display to the whole world is a President spiraling out of control, wielding federal law enforcement as an unaccountable instrument of personal power and revenge,” Ossoff said. Fulton County Commission Chair Robb Pitts said he was “not surprised” that the center was raided. “We’ve known all along that Fulton County has been a target for obvious reasons,” Pitts said at a Wednesday press conference, calling the prior elections “legal” and “fair.” Pitts added that the counted votes were “secure” in the county’s possession, but he after their seizure by the FBI could “no longer satisfy … that those ballots are still secure.” Fulton County Democratic Commissioner Mo Ivory called the raid “an assault on voters.” Fulton County Commissioner Mo …

China  China has been expanding exports to Latin America, particularly Brazil, during the decades when the EU was negotiating the Mercosur trade deal. The EU-Mercosur deal is an opportunity for Europe to claw back some market share, especially in competitive sectors like automotive, machines and aviation. The deal also strengthens the EU’s hand on staying on top when it comes to direct investments, an area where European companies are still outshining their Chinese competitors. Emmanuel Macron made a valiant attempt to rally the troops for a last-minute counterattack, and at one point it looked like he had a good chance to throw a wrench in the works after wooing Italy’s Meloni. | Pool photo by Ludovic Marin/EPA More politically, China has somewhat succeeded in drawing countries like Brazil away from Western points of view, for instance via the BRICS grouping, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, and other developing economies. Because the deal is not only about trade but also creates deeper political cooperation, Lula and his Mercosur counterparts become more closely …
