Blind chimp in Louisiana regains sight after cataract surgery

Blind chimp in Louisiana regains sight after cataract surgery

Fifty-four-year-old Pierre was completely blind before undergoing a cataract surgery that restored his sight. With this surgery comes a greater ability to move around his surroundings, participate in fun activities, climb more confidently, and control his dynamics with other chimps (Pan troglodytes). Oh forgot to mention, Pierre is a chimpanzee. He’s a resident at Chimp Haven, a chimpanzee sanctuary in Louisiana (and the largest in the world) where most of the chimps have retired from biomedical research.  In humans, cataract surgery is a very common procedure that replaces the eye’s cloudy lens with an artificial one. However, in other animals, it’s not so simple. Pierre required months of preparation, not for the surgery itself, but for his recovery and possible post-operative needs. Before the surgery, Pierre’s team trained him to present his eyes for care, including positioning for the administration of eye drops and close eye monitoring if necessary, according to a statement sent to Popular Science.  Pierre before his cataract surgery. Man arrested after manhunt in deadly Louisiana stabbing spree

Man arrested after manhunt in deadly Louisiana stabbing spree

A Louisiana man has been arrested in connection with a grisly stabbing spree that left four people dead and one in critical condition, officials said. Kaegan Jude Solet, 47, of Houma, was arrested Sunday, the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office said. Authorities searched for Solet over the weekend after they identified him as a person of interest in Friday’s spate of stabbings in Houma, a city about 55 miles southwest of New Orleans, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies initially found a child with apparent stab wounds, who was taken by air ambulance to a hospital and remains in critical condition, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies then discovered “multiple deceased victims” inside nearby homes. At least four were killed. The stabbing spree was not a “random act of violence,” Lt. Blake Tabor, a sheriff’s spokesperson, told NBC News. He said there “is a link” between Solet and the victims but did not disclose it. Tabor told NBC affiliate WDSU of New Orleans that the child who was stabbed remains “in critical condition but stable.” “We do believe …

Lawsuit Adds to Allegations That Cameron Parish LNG Terminals Are Hurting Seafood Industry

Lawsuit Adds to Allegations That Cameron Parish LNG Terminals Are Hurting Seafood Industry

A group of commercial fishers, fishing guides and seafood processors in southwest Louisiana is suing liquefied natural gas company Venture Global, claiming that dredging operations in preparation for the construction of a new terminal resulted in a sediment spill that killed millions of oysters and diminished catches of finfish, crabs and shrimp. Venture Global, which already operates a nearly $10 billion LNG export terminal in Cameron Parish, is currently constructing a second, $30 billion terminal there. As part of the project, the company is enlarging a channel near Calcasieu Lake to allow tankers to access the planned terminal, called CP2. The suit, filed on July 30 in the 38th Judicial District Court, adds to a growing list of legal actions alleging that the construction of CP2 is hurting the seafood industry in the area. Anthony “Tad” Theriot, one of the 20 plaintiffs in the suit, estimates his immediate losses at over $450,000, and he doesn’t know when or if his fishing grounds will fully recover. “Best case scenario, they pay you for every year that …

Former Louisiana mayor completes 90-day jail term for raping 16-year-old boy

Former Louisiana mayor completes 90-day jail term for raping 16-year-old boy

The former Louisiana mayor Misty Roberts has completed the 90-day jail sentence she received for raping a 16-year-old boy while still in elected office and been released from custody, according to state corrections records. The 44-year-old finished her jail term on Monday, the Labor Day holiday in the US, one week after the state judge who presided over her case rejected a request from prosecutors to force her to serve a harsher sentence. Judge Kent Savoie based Roberts’ sentence on a list of more than 30 cases that were resolved through plea deals, unlike her prosecution, which culminated in a jury trial and guilty verdict, Louisiana news station KPLC reported. The judge recently had acknowledged publicly that this was a mistake. “I asked someone to get me a list of cases similar,” the judge said at a 31 August court hearing, according to KPLC. “I made an assumption, and that assumption was wrong. I was wrong in that respect.” Nonetheless, the outlet reported, Savoie indicated that he would not punish Roberts for exercising her right …

Starbase Louisiana 101: A Look At Elon’s New Space City

Starbase Louisiana 101: A Look At Elon’s New Space City

Following the Starbase Louisiana announcement last week, questions have swirled over Musk’s motivation for choosing this location. In response, Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu takes a closer and identifies four main reasons including i) orbital trajectory (optimizing for ODCs), ii) geography, iii) regulation, and iv) propellant (bringing processing/production onsite). New Starbase SpaceX announced a new $100 billion Starship launch site in Louisiana last week with initial plans to build five two-pad complexes or ten towers. Longer term, Elon Musk commented there could be over twelve towers capable of launching more than 30 flights daily. The site is expected to be materially larger than Starbase Texas and essentially be a “space city” with on-site fuel processing/production, dedicated power generation, deep-water port, employee housing, and potentially an airport; Starship manufacturing however will seemingly not occur here. Construction is slated to begin next year with first launch slated for no earlier than in 2029 (2030 is more realistic). Headline investment amount is $100bn although this could span over a decade. The exact location will be an area called …

The Netherlands Will Never Be Rid of Louisiana Crawfish

The Netherlands Will Never Be Rid of Louisiana Crawfish

Confronted with a seasoned, boiled, arguably delicious crayfish, some of the people of the Netherlands are not sure exactly what to do. “Do you suck the head out?” I heard from the table next to me earlier this summer, at Two Chefs, a restaurant in Amsterdam that hosts a monthly crayfish boil. Yes is the answer: The best way to eat a crayfish is to shell the tail, then slurp the flavored juices out of the head, and pick out the remaining meat with your hands. This strategy might not be an immediate transatlantic hit. At the boil, one 29-year-old from Maastricht likened the meal to shrimp but with more work. Two twins told me that the crayfish would need to look a little more chic on the plate to appeal to the Dutch public. But, given the ever-growing population of crayfish in the Netherlands, coming around to eating more of them could benefit the country. Because if Dutch consumers aren’t sure how they feel about crayfish, crayfish inarguably love the Netherlands. They have invaded …

Far-Right British Provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos Arrested by US Immigration Enforcement

Far-Right British Provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos Arrested by US Immigration Enforcement

U.S. immigration officials arrested controversial British far-right commentator Milo Yiannopoulos on Thursday in New Orleans, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Immigration officials announced on Friday that Yiannopoulos was arrested at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport and accused him of overstaying after entering the United States legally in May 2019 through New York City. An immigration judge issued a final order of removal on July 22 after Yiannopoulos failed to show up for his immigration hearing, a DHS spokesperson wrote in an email. “He chose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation’s laws,” a spokesperson for DHS wrote in an emailed statement. ICE’s online detainee locator did not say where Yiannopoulos was being held, but directed family and legal representatives to the agency’s office in Alexandria, Louisiana, a deportation hub for international flights. Representatives of Yiannopoulos did not respond to a request for comment. It was unclear whether he has legal representation. The British national has most recently worked for the rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, who was scheduled …

Milo Yiannopoulos Detained by ICE in Louisiana

Milo Yiannopoulos Detained by ICE in Louisiana

Milo Yiannopoulos, a British national known for his near-constant reinventions as a vizier within far-right American politics for more than a decade, has been detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Louisiana, according to the department’s records. While it’s not clear which detention facility Yiannopoulos is currently being held in, the ICE directory instructs any family or legal representatives to contact the Enforcement and Removal Office in Alexandria, Louisiana, a processing center for the central part of the state, about 200 miles from New Orleans. ICE and the Department of Homeland Security did not immediately comment on the matter or indicate plans to deport Yiannopoulos. TMZ first broke the news of Yiannopoulos’ detention. He has previously lived and worked in the US, allegedly on an O-1 visa, which is for individuals with extraordinary abilities in the arts, sciences, and other areas, including journalism—but he has never been a US citizen. Yiannopoulos got his start in US politics at the right-wing website Breitbart, where he worked from 2014 to 2017. He left the job after …

Louisiana governor ‘not concerned’ about environmental impact of Gulf Coast SpaceX facility

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry (R) brushed aside fears Wednesday morning about possible negative environmental impacts from SpaceX’s planned $100 billion launch facility in the state.   He told CBS News on Wednesday that he was “not concerned about the environmental impact” of the new spaceport, which will be constructed along the Gulf Coast on a former… Source link
