Every text message, photograph, and saved file still comes down to a simple bargain: information is stored as either 0 or 1. That binary system built modern computing, and for decades engineers kept improving it by shrinking the transistors that carry and store those bits. That long run is getting harder to sustain. As components approach physical limits, researchers are looking for other ways to handle information, including methods that do not rely only on electric charge. One of the most closely watched alternatives is spintronics, a field that uses another property of electrons, their magnetism, to store and process data. A new study from researchers at Institut Laue-Langevin pushes that idea in an unusual direction. Instead of building memory around two stable magnetic states, the work shows that a single crystal can hold four. In principle, that could let one memory unit represent four values rather than just 0 and 1, opening a path toward denser forms of digital storage. It was discovered only recently, by an international research team coordinated by geologist Luca Bindi at the University of Florence, which identified the novel clathrate based on calcium, copper, and silicon. It’s a material never before observed either in nature or as an artificial compound created in the laboratory. What Are Clathrates? The term “clathrates” denotes materials characterized by a “cage-like” structure that traps other atoms and molecules inside, giving them unique properties. Of great technological interest, these materials are being studied for various applications ranging from energy conversion (as thermoelectric materials capable of transforming heat into electricity) to the development of new semiconductors, to gas storage and hydrogen for future energy technologies. Now, new research finds that those gentle changes in tension and pressure also affect your brain, and may play a role in the organ’s overall health. Imaging in humans and other animal species has long shown that the brain gently moves inside the fluid-filled skull cavity, but it’s never been clear what, exactly, is propelling this motion, said neuroscientist Patrick Drew, a Penn State University professor and associate director of the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences. Using advanced imaging, Drew’s team observed mice brains before and after the animals began walking. They realized that the brain actually moved just milliseconds before a mouse took a step — the brief moment when the animal’s abdominal muscles contracted in preparation for movement. A shielding layer can do a lot of jobs badly if you ask too much of it. It can block electromagnetic interference but not neutrons. It can stop radiation but add too much bulk. Lastly, it can survive heat yet fail when bent, stretched, or shaped around real hardware. That tradeoff has become harder to ignore as spacecraft, medical systems, and advanced electronics move into harsher environments. In the new work, a team at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology, or KIST, says it has built a single material that tackles several of those demands at once. The result is a thin, flexible, 3D-printable composite that can shield both electromagnetic waves and neutron radiation. The research was led by Dr. Joo Yong-ho at KIST’s Extreme Environment Shielding Materials Research Center. The material combines single-walled carbon nanotubes, known as SWCNTs, with boron nitride nanotubes, or BNNTs, inside a polydimethylsiloxane, or PDMS, polymer matrix.
