Stateside, their neighbourhood has undergone a big change, implementing a fresh safety measure.  Sadly, Montecito is prone to adverse weather conditions including wildfires and to preempt this issue, the Montecito Fire Department and Montecito Water District have teamed up to add two new temporary firefighter housing locations to be utilised during periods of elevated fire risk. Quantum interference offers a radically different way to measure time

A new “quantum watch” uses changing interference patterns inside excited helium atoms to determine how much time has passed without counting from a defined time zero. Uppsala University researchers found that short slices of these quantum patterns can serve as distinctive timestamps, with estimated timing accuracy of about 8 femtoseconds. The method exposed a small drift in conventional laboratory timing equipment and could help ultrafast experiments where establishing an exact starting time is difficult. A clock normally needs a beginning. Set the starting point, count the ticks and calculate how much time has passed. A quantum system built from excited helium atoms could offer a different approach. Researchers at Uppsala University have shown that complex interference patterns inside highly excited atoms can act as timestamps. Instead of counting regular oscillations from a known zero point, the method reads a distinctive quantum pattern and matches it to theory to determine how much time has elapsed. The cars are the first to use Geely’s “Golden Brick” battery, with more models coming soon at various Geely brands. Across 107 enterprises, AI infrastructure spending is accelerating well ahead of the ability to see or steer its economics. Most organizations run their AI on a familiar base of hyperscalers and model-provider APIs, yet the next dollar is aimed at specialized compute almost none of them use today; a majority intend to switch or add providers within the year, many within a quarter. Buying decisions turn on integration and total cost of ownership rather than headline token price — which is fortunate, because most enterprises cannot yet see their unit economics clearly: GPUs sit at half utilization or less, and fewer than half rigorously track what their compute actually costs. Mountain snow and meltwater from glaciers in the Himalayas determine how much water is available for drinking, farming and hydropower for millions of people in India, Pakistan, Nepal, China and Afghanistan. This is especially important during the spring and early summer crop-growing season when meltwater helps sustain the flow of rivers and provides the region with a vital buffer against the worst impacts of a dry season or drought. Because many of these rivers cross national borders, changes in water supply can also heighten regional tensions when resources are scarce. Meltwater from snow is one of the pillars of survival – but it’s proved difficult in the past to get accurate measurements across this challenging terrain. So measuring where and how much snow falls is essential. My team’s new research gives improved estimates of snowfall across the west-central Himalayas. Results show that in just one winter, the previous best available snowfall analyses underestimated total seasonal snowfall by 37% over Lake Hampta area in Himachal Pradesh. By including new snowfall observations, we reduced that error dramatically. …
