Politics Home Article | Andy Burnham Plans Meetings With Labour MPs As He Pushes For No 10

2 min read1 hr Exclusive: Andy Burnham is expected to meet with Labour MPs on Monday as he prepares a bid to replace Keir Starmer in Downing Street. The incoming MP for Makerfield is understood to be prioritising MPs with whom he does not have strong relationships, like those elected at the 2024 general election, several sources told PoliticsHome. Burnham pulled off a landslide victory at the Makerfield by-election on Thursday, finishing far ahead of second-placed Reform UK and winning more voters than all other candidates combined. The former health secretary, who now must resign as Greater Manchester mayor to return to the House of Commons, said the result was a “loud cry for change”. Attention now turns to when and how Burnham will challenge the leadership of Keir Starmer. The Prime Minister reiterated this morning that he would stand in any Labour leadership contest and would not “walk away”. PoliticsHome understands that the Burnham operation is reluctant to take an overly aggressive approach to removing Starmer, and hopes that the PM will agree in …

Japanese firms field record proposals from activists at this year’s shareholder meetings

TOKYO, June 8 : Activist investors have made a record number of proposals to Japanese firms for shareholders to vote on at annual general meetings this month, including growing calls for company executives to step down. Fuelling the boom has been multi-year prodding of Japanese companies by regulators and the Tokyo Stock Exchange to improve shareholder returns and invest in growth, as well as some recent big activist wins. As of June 3, 139 proposals by activist shareholders were submitted for votes at AGMs, two more than last year, according to data compiled by Mitsubishi UFJ Trust Bank. The majority were submitted by foreign investors. Of these, 19 either oppose a company-nominated director’s appointment or nominate a new director candidate. That’s up from 14 such proposals last year and just seven in 2024. It’s not easy for shareholder proposals to pass in any region, though they often pressure companies to reform. In Japan, fewer than one in 20 submitted since January 2023 have passed, data compiled by shareholder advisory firm SquareWell Partners shows. That said, …

If Someone’s Completely Silent During Work Meetings, They’re Actually Communicating 10 Things To Their Boss Without Realizing

If Someone’s Completely Silent During Work Meetings, They’re Actually Communicating 10 Things To Their Boss Without Realizing

Leveraging quietness is a superpower in most conversations, including at work. When we’re offered productive space for silence, even in a work meeting, we make our conversation and language more intentional. However, not everyone has the perspective to appreciate silence, so it’s often misunderstood and weaponized. For example, if someone’s completely silent during work meetings, they may actually be communicating certain things to their boss without realizing, not all of which are positive. If someone’s completely silent during work meetings, they’re actually communicating 10 things to their boss without realizing 1. They’re disengaged Andrey_Popov | Shutterstock We often remind people that we’re paying attention to them through active listening, including eye contact and verbal confirmations, but sometimes, quietness is taken the wrong way. Especially in a group setting, where it’s easy to get wrapped up in group dynamics and needs, when one person is staying completely silent, it can often feel like they’re disengaged or that they don’t care. Especially if we’re looking at a laptop or avoiding eye contact, saying nothing can make people …

Brussels rebukes Turkey for excluding Cyprus from climate meetings – POLITICO

Brussels rebukes Turkey for excluding Cyprus from climate meetings – POLITICO

“This is unacceptable, and we will also not accept it. You deal with all of the 27, or none of the 27,” the Commission’s climate chief Wopke Hoekstra said to POLITICO on Thursday. He added: “If you seek to host an international event, that trumps any national sensitivities you might be having.” Turkey maintains no diplomatic relations with the Republic of Cyprus, the EU member country internationally recognized as the sole legitimate government of the entire island. Instead, Ankara is the only government worldwide to recognize as independent the breakaway Turkish Cypriot north. The island has been effectively divided since Turkey invaded in 1974 in response to a Greek-backed coup. The Commission also addressed the issue at Thursday’s press conference. “We have made it clear that the exclusion of a United Nations member state from the preparation process of the U.N. COP31 climate conference is not acceptable,” said spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen. “Türkiye has assured us that Cyprus would not be excluded from future preparatory meetings for COP31.” Source link

BREAKING: Kent council votes to say ‘lord’s prayer’ at meetings

BREAKING: Kent council votes to say ‘lord’s prayer’ at meetings

The National Secular Society has expressed disappointment that a Kent council has voted to introduce prayers at meetings. Today, Kent County Council voted 46-15 in favour of changing the council’s constitution to specify meetings will start with a recital of the ‘lord’s prayer’, despite opposition from multiple parties. There were six abstentions. Amendments to have a moment of silent reflection, or for the prayers to be said prior to the official agenda beginning, were defeated. Prayers have not been said at Kent County Council meetings since 1987. The NSS, which urged all councillors prior to the meeting to oppose the plans, called the proposal “a regressive and divisive move which sends entirely the wrong message to the people of Kent”. Councillors call plans “ridiculous farce”, “performative virtue-signalling” The plans were put forward by Reform UK councillor Christopher Hespe. Kent County Council came under Reform control year. Reform UK councillors also imposed prayers on Derbyshire County Council last year after the party took control of the council. Opposing the amendment to have a silent moment of …

The secret to escaping never-ending work meetings and boosting wellbeing

Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Anyone working in an organisation knows it: meetings follow one after another at a frantic pace. On average, managers spend 23 hours a week in meetings. Much of what happens in them is considered to be of low value, or even entirely counterproductive. The paradox is that bad meetings generate even more meetings… in an attempt to repair the damage caused by previous ones. And yet, for a long time, meetings were not the subject of management research. A 2015 handbook laid the groundwork for the nascent field of “Meeting Science”. Among other things, the research revealed that the real issue may not be the number of meetings, but rather how they are designed, the lack of clarity about their purpose, and the inequalities …

Sam Altman Accuses Elon Musk of Laughing at Memes During Important OpenAI Meetings

Sam Altman Accuses Elon Musk of Laughing at Memes During Important OpenAI Meetings

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech OpenAI CEO Sam Altman took the stand yesterday in Musk v. Altman, the chaotic, embarrassing, and yet deeply illuminating lawsuit — filed against Altman by Elon Musk, the world’s richest man — that’s been gripping Silicon Valley for the past few weeks. As expected, Altman’s testimony, delivered under threat of perjury, was fascinating for a number of reasons. Among them: the OpenAI CEO’s allegation that, during important meetings, Musk has a habit of… making everyone look at memes on his phone. Per New York Times tech reporter Mike Isaac, Altman confirmed to the court that there was once a meeting to discuss Tesla, Musk’s electric carmaker, possibly absorbing OpenAI. Which would’ve been a big deal, especially because this whole case is about Musk accusing Altman of turning OpenAI from a non-profit to a for-profit. During this seemingly very important meeting, however, Altman claimed that Musk held up talks by making everyone look at memes with him. There was a …

Zoom teams up with World to verify humans in meetings

Zoom teams up with World to verify humans in meetings

Meeting platform Zoom has announced a partnership with World, Sam Altman’s human ID verification company, to ensure that the people attending meetings are actually human and not AI-generated imposters. The threat is real and growing fast. The most dramatic example came in early 2024, when engineering firm Arup lost $25 million after an employee in Hong Kong authorized a series of wire transfers during what appeared to be a routine video call with the company’s CFO and several colleagues. Every person on that call — except the victim — turned out to be an AI-generated deepfake. A similar attack hit a multinational firm in Singapore in 2025. Across the board, financial losses from deepfake-enabled fraud exceeded $200 million in just the first quarter of last year, according to one estimate, and the average loss per corporate incident now tops $500,000, according to security industry reports. So while deepfake video-call fraud may not be something most people ever encounter personally, it represents a serious risk for businesses, especially those that regularly conduct high-value transactions over video. …
