A stunning stretch of golden sand here in the UK has been compared to Australia, with its sweeping dunes and scenic surroundings. One Tripadvisor reviewer went as far as to describe it as “sensational”.
Drenched in sunshine that transforms the sea into a glistening diamond carpet, Camber Sands near Rye in East Sussex, could readily be confused with somewhere more tropical.
And with the mercury set to rise to as high as 31C over the coming days, a visit here could be perfect.
Camber Sands sits between the charmingly historic town of Rye, renowned for its lively harbour, cobbled streets, medieval buildings and excellent restaurants, and the dramatic headland of Dungeness, located at the meeting point of the River Rother and Rye Bay.
It is just under a two hour journey from London.
Despite its appeal and the probability of crowds, the beach’s sheer size virtually ensures your own private patch of tranquillity for the day.
And a look at the Government’s water bathing profile for Camber shows a steady “good” classification, a benchmark it’s upheld since 2021.
The beach also holds an impressive rating of 4.3 stars out of five on Tripadvisor, according to 2,024 reviews.
Guests regularly praise its sand dunes, walking routes, lifeguards, and the family-orientated environment.
As you might imagine, Camber Sands transforms into a thriving destination during the summer months, drawing visitors from near and far, including London, creating a vibrant beach atmosphere.
It is vital, however, to recall the tragic events of 2016, when five men lost their lives after venturing into the sea at Camber Sands.
An inquest recorded their deaths as misadventure, indicating they may have wandered too close to a sandbar rather than being swept away by a rip current.
In the wake of this devastating incident, RNLI lifeguards were stationed at the beach. Visitors are strongly advised to remain within the red and yellow flag zones under the supervision of lifeguards while swimming or paddling.
Beachgoers should also remain vigilant of the rapidly incoming tide. Rochester District advises against digging deep holes or tunnels in the sand, as outlined on its website.
One Tripadvisor review of Camber Sands reads: “Such a beautiful place that looks like it’s stood still in time. Sensational Sandy beaches and delightful dunes to watch the sea and grab a life bite or a dip in the sea.
“It’s very simple here and great for picnics. It’s truly beautiful and one of the best beaches I have visited in the UK.”
Another user wrote: “This beach was just WOW! Miles of perfect golden flat sands……so reminded us of beaches in Australia.”
Some visitors have, however, raised concerns regarding parking charges. To park at Camber Central on Old Lydd Road, summer rates are as follows: Up to an hour £6; one to three hours £12; three to six hours £24; over six hours: £30.
