‘Missed opportunity’ as government rejects call for mass prostate cancer screening | Science, Climate & Tech News

The health secretary has decided only a few thousand men at high risk of getting prostate cancer will be offered targeted screening for the disease. James Murray said he was “following the science” after the UK National Screening Committee (UKNSC) concluded that offering it to more people could do “more harm than good”. Men with the BRCA2 genetic mutation, which means they have a far higher risk of prostate cancer, will now get a test every two years between the ages of 45 and 61. To be eligible, they must also have a family history of prostate, breast, ovarian or pancreatic cancer. Campaigners – who had urged the government to reject the committee’s advice – called it a missed opportunity to save lives. Some wanted it offered to all men over 45, or to other groups with an increased risk, such as black men and those with a family history of the disease. They argued many men are dying unnecessarily because their disease is going undiagnosed until it’s too late. Under the new approach, it’s …

Mamdani skipped NYC’s Israel Day Parade. Supporters say he missed the point.

Mamdani skipped NYC’s Israel Day Parade. Supporters say he missed the point.

NEW YORK (RNS) — An estimated 60,000 marchers and more than 100,000 spectators gathered on Fifth Avenue on Sunday (May 31) for New York City’s Israel Day Parade, an annual event that has drawn criticism from those who oppose Israel’s military actions and government. By not attending the event, Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a pro-Palestinian activist and staunch critic of Israel, became the first sitting New York City mayor since the parade’s founding in 1964 to skip it.  The parade’s supporters say participation is foremost about supporting the New York Jewish community — which has faced escalating antisemitic incidents since the Hamas attacks of Oct. 7, 2023, and the ensuing war in Gaza — rather than the actions of the Israeli government. The city is home to the largest population of Jews outside of Israel. Several other state and city leaders joined in the festivities and gave speeches, including Gov. Kathy Hochul and former NYC mayors Michael R. Bloomberg and Eric Adams. Jessica Tisch, the city’s Jewish police commissioner, was a marshal. “What an incredible display of unity, …

‘Nobody Realized I Had Autism’ — Woman Shares 10 Signs That Were Missed In Childhood

A 25-year-old woman named Zoe Grace is using her TikTok platform to raise awareness about how autism presents in women, like herself.  In her posts, she noted that autism screenings often overlook girls and women with autistic traits due to a variety of reasons, including gender bias within the literature and differences in signs and symptoms between boys and girls. A woman shares 10 signs of autism that were missed in her childhood: 1. Masking In the first TikTok post in a series explaining the ways her autism was missed as a child, Grace mentioned that one of her mechanisms to fit in socially was to copy characters from movies or imitate other girls in order to try to fit in. She also noted that she’d display different personality traits depending on who she was with.  2. Having sensory issues around food Another indicator of autism that was missed in her childhood was “being ‘fussy’ with food because of sensory issues and textures.” Grace offered examples of how those sensory issues played out for her, like not allowing certain foods …

I found the Google Maps feature that takes you back in time — I can’t believe I missed it

I found the Google Maps feature that takes you back in time — I can’t believe I missed it

Google has been preserving snapshots of the world for years, including versions of places you thought were long gone. Your childhood street might still exist exactly as you remember it on Google’s servers. The corner store that shut down years ago is still open. Your neighbor’s old tree is still standing. Even the ugly green door your parents finally repainted in 2019 could still be there. Most people don’t realize Google Maps has archived this history for more than a decade, or that anyone can access it. It’s called Street View’s Time Machine (also known as Historical Street View imagery). I spent far too long revisiting places that no longer exist in the same form as they did today. Consider this your warning before you open it: you may not get much else done afterward. Related I love Google Maps, but I always avoid these 5 features Before your next trip, you might want to turn off these Google Maps features. Street View has been keeping receipts Your city has a director’s cut Google has …

Woman wins £149k payout after boss missed meeting she drove 800 miles for

A Welsh canoe polo star has been awarded nearly £150,000 after her boss ordered her to drive overnight from Germany to the UK for a meeting – which he did not bother to attend. Bethan Littlewood, 29, was working as a personal trainer for Nuffield Health in Bridgend, a job she balanced with her athletic career, which had taken her to the 2023 Canoe Polo European Championships. She was in Germany to represent Great Britain at that tournament when she received the summons from her manager forcing her to drive through the night back to Wales. She arrived on time for the meeting only to discover her boss was not there as he was “double booked”. This was the “last straw” for Ms Littlewood – who was already going through various problems at the workplace – and she decided to resign. Ms Littlewood, a cancer survivor and a gold medallist at the 2019 championships, has now successfully sued Nuffield Health and received £149,017 in compensation. The tribunal in Cardiff heard she had worked as a …

Sarah Bingham, 39, from Weston-super-Mare, said her son Caleb nearly died at eight months old after having blood poisoning and bacterial meningitis. After waking from a month-long coma, he “completely regressed” and acted like a newborn. He remained non-verbal until age five, struggling with walking and socialising, and was diagnosed with autism at age 10 – as part of the diagnosis process, he had a genetic test, but Sarah said she never heard back about the results so assumed everything was fine. It was not until 2025, when Sarah requested all of her son’s medical records, that it was revealed the genetic test showed …

A job that changed me: At 14 I was a basketball musician. If someone missed a shot, I’d drop in a ‘du-ba-dum’ | Australian lifestyle

A job that changed me: At 14 I was a basketball musician. If someone missed a shot, I’d drop in a ‘du-ba-dum’ | Australian lifestyle

Music came to me very early on. I’m told that as a baby I would fall asleep to opera – arias would stop me crying. By age six I was enrolled at the local conservatory of music in Athens, learning classical guitar and moving, quite seriously, through music theory and the fundamentals. By my teens, I was in a band with friends, covering everything from Avril Lavigne to Muse, aiming for precision over hours of rehearsal. My music practice was very disciplined and far removed from anything resembling “entertainment”. Sport, on the other hand, barely registered for me. This made me a bit of an outlier in the family. In Greece, sport – especially basketball and football AKA soccer – is everywhere. My dad and older brother were deeply invested. One of Greece’s major sport clubs, Olympiakos, is based a few blocks from our house, and their stadiums are part of the neighbourhood’s landscape and soundscape. My brother started playing basketball at a local lower-division team and showed talent at a young age. I mostly …

Kate told the Princess, who is patron of Hearing Dogs for the Deaf charity,  that the cocker spaniel is her first hearing service dog. “And does she help you? That’s all working well?” Anne asked.”Oh, she really helps me,” Wilson agreed. “I …

Jess Cartner-Morley on fashion: missed Love Story? It’s not too late to embrace 90s minimalism | Fashion

Carolyn Bessette Kennedy has been an insider style icon for ever, but this year she has flipped from under-the-radar reference to global phenomenon. Ryan Murphy’s Love Story, a glossy dramatisation of her doomed romance with JFK Jr, gave us nine delicious hours of lingering closeups of her white tank tops and jeans, her simple black dresses, perfect black oval sunglasses and tortoiseshell headbands. If you didn’t know you wanted to dress like CBK before you started watching, you did by the end. The Guardian’s journalism is independent. Carole Radziwill, who was friends with Carolyn, has pointed out that copying CBK’s style is pretty much the least CBK thing you could do. Her friend, she told the Deuxmoi podcast, “pulled her hair back in a headband because she didn’t want to wash it every day. She did what felt natural to her and she dressed in things that made her feel comfortable and most like herself. Mostly jeans and button-downs and T-shirts. The …
