‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’: Revisit 10 memorable moments

‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’: Revisit 10 memorable moments

In July of last year, CBS announced that “The Late Show” would be ending after more than 30 years on air. It was an unexpected move that continues to raise questions about the motivations for the cancellation — CBS maintains it was a purely financial decision. Regardless, the show and host Stephen Colbert, who has been at the helm since 2015, are at the beginning of the end with the series slated to end Thursday. Colbert has had a parade of boldface names appear in the final weeks, including former President Obama; Strike Force Five a.k.a. the other late-night hosts, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers and John Oliver; Jon Stewart; Sally Field; Julia Louis-Dreyfus; and, of course, former “Late Show” host David Letterman (while the interview is worth watching, the wanton destruction of CBS property might be the highlight). It has been a memorable run of shows, but there were countless interviews and monologues over the years that made Colbert and “The Late Show” a must-watch. Here, our writers share their favorite moments. Emotional …

Auguste, London E8: ‘Some fleeting moments of greatness’ – restaurant review | Restaurants

Auguste, a brand spanking new Italian restaurant in Hackney, east London, is named, loosely, after a clown. The Edward Hopper painting Soir Bleu hangs on the wall, depicting a tragic sort in a whiteface mask sitting forlornly in a cafe surrounded by hipsters. The clown’s light veneer of calm, it seems, masks his bare tolerance of both his life and his fellow customers. Hopper painted it in 1914, and now, more than a century later, this same sad clown feels more than a little symbolic of all those who have chosen a life in hospitality at this time. Paint on a smile! Get out there! Make the crowds happy! If only business rates could be paid with a bucketload of glitter … Auguste’s owners, chef Mike Bagnall and general manager Dylan Walters, have taken over the 32-seater premises formerly known as Papi, which recently upped sticks and moved on to a much larger site at The Golden Tooth in Newington Green. The space has been transformed from its Papi days as an extremely hip, European-influenced, …

Final moments of Altman v Musk trial as jury decides fate of AI titans | Science, Climate & Tech News

Elon Musk and the OpenAI boss have spent the last three weeks battling in court over Sam Altman’s company, in a trial that could mould the future of artificial intelligence. After listening to bitter testimonies and heated exchanges, the jury has now gone to deliberate on their verdict. Read more: Musk v Altman – the tech titans’ battle It all centres around the founding principles of OpenAI. Back in 2015, Mr Musk and Mr Altman were two of the company’s co-founders, who created a non-profit to research AI and advance it in a way “that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole” while “unconstrained by a need to generate financial return”. Despite being a co-founder, Mr Musk quit as the co-chair in 2018. Mr Musk alleged Mr Altman has strayed far from that founding principle. He now wants more than $134bn in damages – although the funds won’t go to him personally – as well as the removal of Mr Altman and OpenAI’s president Greg Brockman and the scrapping of some OpenAI deals …

3 Bizarre Moments From Tense State Opening Of Parliament

3 Bizarre Moments From Tense State Opening Of Parliament

The State Opening of Parliament is always a momentous occasion where the government sets out its plans for the next parliamentary session via King Charles. The monarch makes a grand entrance to the Palace of Westminster, dressed in all his finery, and reads out the legislation the government plans to focus on over the next year or so. But there’s a shadow hanging over the whole of Westminster right now after more than 80 Labour MPs called for the prime minister to resign and four of his ministers quit. It comes after the party took a drubbing at the elections in England, Scotland and Wales last week. But Keir Starmer has insisted he is staying in post, even after four of his own ministers and four ministerial aides quit and urged him to set out a timetable for his own departure. Now all eyes are on his rival in cabinet, health secretary Wes Streeting, who has long-held ambitions to be prime minister. His allies even briefed the media that he was considering resigning from government …

5 moments in history that still echo along Route 66

The travel guide “assured protection for Negro travelers.” (Photo by Craig Fritz / For The Times) Forty-four of the 89 counties along Route 66 were sundown towns, communities where it was encouraged for Black people to leave before dark — or else. Route 66 diners, motels and gas stations routinely refused service to Black travelers. In 1936, a Harlem postal worker named Victor Green began publishing the Negro Motorist Green Book, a guide to the hotels, restaurants and gas stations along the route that would serve Black travelers. More than 1,400 tourist homes (private residences that took in guests when hotels wouldn’t) were listed during the guide’s run. For Black families on Route 66, the Green Book was as essential as a spare tire. In Tulsa, the Greenwood District was once known as “Black Wall Street.” White thugs destroyed it in the 1921 Race Massacre. The community rebuilt and became a hub of …

3 Moments Which Suggest Labour MPs Are Panicking Amid Starmer's Uncertain Future

3 Moments Which Suggest Labour MPs Are Panicking Amid Starmer's Uncertain Future

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer speaks as Starmer hosts social media industry leaders to discuss child safety online Thursday, April 16, 2026, in London.  Labour MPs can’t decide if Keir Starmer is coming or going even as his premiership hangs in the balance. Despite the party’s horrendous performance in the local elections, the prime minister has made it clear he has no intention of stepping down. That means it is up to the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) to try and unite behind an alternative candidate to oust the PM. But MPs cannot decide what course of action they want to take, and so the party seems to be falling apart – in public. 1. ‘Wholly Unserious’ Backbencher Catherine West threatened to pose a leadership challenge to Starmer if she got the required backing of 20% of the parliamentary party. However, after Starmer’s make-or-break speech on Monday, West changed tactics and sent a letter to fellow Labour MPs. She asked them to back her letter calling on the PM to step down in September. Fellow Labour MP …

The brutal last moments of Ian Watkins’ life and the 20 seconds it took to kill him, court hears

Paedophile Ian Watkins was fatally stabbed by a man who had designs on being “famous”, according to the prosecutor in the murder trial. The former singer in Pontypridd rock band Lostprophets was killed while serving a 29-year prison sentence for child sexual abuse offences, including the attempted rape of a fan’s baby. Two men – Rico Gedel, 25, also known as Rashid, and Samuel Dodsworth, 43 – are standing trial accused of murdering Watkins in HMP Wakefield last October. The killing was the second time Watkins had been attacked while serving time in the west Yorkshire prison. On the first day of the trial, Leeds Crown Court heard Watkins, 48, was stabbed with a makeshift weapon before being found in his jail cell covered in blood and in a critical condition. You can read our live updates from court here. David Attenborough turns 100: The national treasure’s 10 most iconic moments

Sir David Attenborough has brought the joy of the natural and animal world to the nation’s screens through his beloved programmes for 70 years. His reverential, sometimes playful tone has become a mainstay of British television, while his efforts to raise awareness for conservation and climate change have inspired millions. In a clip that has been voted one of the top TV moments of all time, one young gorilla lies across his body, while just at the edge of the picture you can see the baby gorillas who were busy removing his shoes. The 13-part series featured footage from 30 countries. More than 500 million people tuned in – 11.4 per cent of the global population. In 1984, Sir David became one of the first underwater presenters as he observed the grey reef shark in The Living Planet. Developments in full face plates allowed him not only to be able to deliver his commentary but to be recorded clearly. Also in The Living Planet, he presented in zero gravity from the Nasa experimental plane, nicknamed …

The 7 Best Grooming Moments of the 2026 Met Gala, Ranked

The 2026 Met Gala theme of “Fashion Is Art” brought out the best of fashion, from elegant tailoring to body-forward trompe l’oeil selects. And to complement these looks, we saw a wide range of grooming choices, too. Those with long locks opted for clean slickbacks, cornrows, and side parts, while those with shorter hair leaned on their strong facial structures to direct the eye toward the main focus: their outfit. Eye makeup came in many forms, from subtle smokey to striking, colorful brushstrokes. Scruff was also big at the star-studded event, running the gamut from five o’clock shadows to burly beardss. (There was even a skinny mustache or two.) All of this is to say that, yes, fashion is art, but so is well-considered grooming. Below, a selection of our favorite hair, makeup, and facial hair moments from the 2026 Met Gala, definitively ranked. 7.
