Churchill did not want D-Day ‘His plan would have ended WW2 six months earlier’ | Films | Entertainment

Winston Churchill has been portrayed many times on screen, from John Lithgow in The Crown to Michael Gambon in TV film, Churchill’s Secret. Back in 2017, there were two movies focused on the towering World War 2 Prime Minister, with Gary Oldman winning the Best Actor Oscar for Darkest Hour. Released prior was Churchill, which starred Succession’s Brian Cox in a controversial take on the historical figure. This film is set in the weeks leading up to D-Day, as Churchill fights with fellow Allied Commanders and King George VI, expressing his doubts about Operation Overlord. It’s not common knowledge that Churchill wasn’t fully behind D-Day, which celebrates its 81st anniversary today, as he was concerned about a similar slaughter to Gallipoli during the First World War. Instead, he preferred the idea of invading Nazi-occupied Europe from its soft underbelly in Italy. Speaking exclusively with Daily Express around the release of the film, Cox revealed the evidence for Churchill’s doubts. Cox told us previously: “It’s mentioned in [Supreme Allied Commander, later US President] Eisenhower’s diaries and …

The First 18 Months

The First 18 Months

Sir! I love you! Thank you for including me in this meeting to talk about all the wonderful things you’ve accomplished since January 2025. What a big, beautiful man you are. The greatest fellow in the whole world! You’re so alert. And you can walk! Wow! When grown men see you, they weep, and they are right to do so. Look at those toes. Your hair looks great; it is the right amount. If you were playing golf and you wanted to just put the ball in the hole with your hand, I don’t think any of us would stop you. And that face! That face should be on Mount Rushmore! Or the Department of Labor, at the very least. I love how you like to watch a parade and clap. Maybe we can do that for your birthday! Please give me back my phone; I think you are calling Europe, and that will not make anything better. I love what a priority gas emissions are for you, and how you smile afterward. I like …

Quick commerce FirstClub doubles valuation to 5M in nine months

Quick commerce FirstClub doubles valuation to $255M in nine months

In a quick-commerce market obsessed with speed, Indian startup FirstClub has convinced investors that quality may be a fresh opportunity, helping to double its valuation just nine months after its last funding round. The Bengaluru-based startup has raised $55 million in a Series B round co-led by Peak XV Partners and Sofina, valuing the company at $255 million after the investment. That’s up from $120 million when it last raised capital in September 2025. Existing investors Accel, RTP Global, and Paramark Ventures also participated. The latest financing brings FirstClub’s total funding to $86 million. As grocery shopping increasingly moves online, India’s quick-commerce market has expanded rapidly, growing from about $6.2 billion in FY25 to an estimated $11 billion-$12 billion in FY26, according to a recent ICICI Securities report. Leading players have popularized online grocery shopping through ever-faster deliveries. However, FirstClub is wagering that a growing segment of consumers will prioritize quality and product curation over receiving orders as quickly as possible. Founded in 2024 by former Flipkart executive Ayyappan R, FirstClub operates a curated online …

Months after the regime crackdown, Iranians search for missing protesters

Months after the regime crackdown, Iranians search for missing protesters

His family and friends are searching everywhere for him. The official list of detainees does not feature his name. He’s not recorded among the victims identified by the Iranian Legal Medicine Organisation, the forensic department under the country’s justice ministry. Morteza Ebrahimi, 35, has been missing since January 8, a black day for many families across Iran, when the crackdown on anti-regime protests reached a brutal, bloody peak. That night, as internet access was cut across the country, the authorities unleashed hell on the streets of some Tehran neighbourhoods. Special units opened fire with military-grade weapons on protesters in the heart of the Iranian capital. Several thousand people were killed. In the days that followed, families set out to search for their missing loved ones. Many converged on the Kahrizak Forensic Medical Centre, a morgue in Tehran’s southern suburbs where dozens of bodies were brought in by refrigerated lorries. But there was no news, no confirmation, no closure for Ebrahimi’s loved ones. The young man had simply disappeared in the black hole of Iranian people …

Uber caps employee AI spending after blowing through budget in 4 months

Uber caps employee AI spending after blowing through budget in 4 months

AI is getting expensive, and some companies are cutting back on usage in an attempt to moderate costs. That cohort includes Uber, which recently instituted internal usage caps as a way to cut down on its exorbitant AI spend. Bloomberg reports that the company has instituted a new rule that places a monthly $1,500 cap per employee and per agentic coding tool, including Anthropic’s Claude Code or Cursor. The usage is trackable via an internal dashboard that each employee has access to, although — in certain cases — the caps can be exceeded with permission, the company says. The news is perhaps not too surprising, since, in April, the company’s CTO revealed that the ridesharing giant had blown through its entire annual AI budget in a matter of four months. That appears to have occurred after Uber encouraged staff to use AI “as much as possible” and even ranked their internal usage competitively on internal leader boards, The Information previously reported. Uber’s COO, Andrew Macdonald, also recently cast doubt on AI’s productivity impact, noting during …
