The late night host, 62, who on Monday kicked off his final week of The Late Show, revealed in a new interview that his brother Tommy is getting married Saturday. After the last episode — which he said would be attended by all his siblings and their spouses — “we’re all getting on the train the next day and going down to [Washington] D.C.,” Colbert told People. “The next day, the focus is not on me,” he said. “The focus is on my brother — so much better.” Colbert added that they will all “get drunk” and “sing.” Stephen Colbert’s final ‘Late Show’ episode airs Thursday on CBS (Getty) “We all think we have …

The Headlines AUCTION ACTION. Sotheby’s in New York sold $303.9 million-worth of modern art yesterday evening, while Phillips netted $115.2 million from their modern and contemporary sale held just beforehand. But as ARTnews’ Daniel Cassady reports, there is still a sense of caution from buyers who are showing demand for exceptional works, but are sensitive to price. At Sotheby’s, that meant solid results, led by a $48.4 million Matisse, but noticeable pauses between bids suggested a cautious market mood. “Competition is very tempered,” one New York advisor said. Earlier at Phillip’s, on the other hand, the auction house’s team “appeared joyous,” writes Julie Brener Davich for ARTnews. The presale estimate of $84.2 million was the highest since 2022, and the sales average lot value of $2.9 million is more than double the $1.4 million average last May. Nevertheless, several works sold below their low estimates. Ultimately, Phillips did best at “selling works by living artists on the secondary market, unattainable on the primary market, said Brener Davich. Cue the frenzied bidding for Joseph Yaeger’s 2021 watercolor, There …

Oh, and FYI — prices are accurate and items in stock as of time of publication. It’s that time of year again, one that’s dreaded by millions of people up and down the country: it’s hay fever season. As somebody who has suffered from it for the last nine years, it’s safe to say I’ve tried every trick in the book when it comes to reducing the symptoms of it. It tortures me from March to October, but realistically I actually suffer from it all year round.  So this was the year I wanted to try some other things, other than the usual nasal spray and tablets, which quite frankly didn’t do much for me at all. What actually helps? It turns out air …

Morning Links for May 19, 2026

To receive Morning Links in your inbox every weekday, sign up for our Breakfast with ARTnews newsletter. Good morning! Christie’s blockbuster evening sales on Monday point to a bullish market for historic works. Reina Sofía’s director says Basque leaders never asked the museum for a Guernica loan, and Spanish politicians technically have no authority in the matter. The UK’s culture secretary has been urged to investigate allegations of antisemitism directed at Southbank Centre chairman Misan Harriman. The Headlines BULLISH MARKET COMEBACK? There was plenty to write home about from Christie’s blockbuster evening sales on Monday, with record-breaking sales that included an 11-foot-wide Jackson Pollock drip painting that went for $181.2 million, a gilded bronze head sculpture by Constantin Brâncuși fetching $107 million with fees, and a $98.4 million Mark Rothko abstraction from 1964, No. 15 (Two Greens and Red Stripe). But as ARTnews reports, those works were expected to do well. Perhaps just as intriguing, the sale revealed more about the market below $20 million, which saw deep bidding that has been missing from auctions in recent years. Also of note, most of the action came from US buyers, while European and Asian clients stayed mostly …

Author of J.M.W. Turner Self-Portrait Questioned: Morning Links

Author of J.M.W. Turner Self-Portrait Questioned: Morning Links

Good Morning! An expert claims the iconic image of JMW Turner printed on British banknotes was never his self-portrait. Hungary’s new minister of culture, Zoltán Tarr, shares his vision for fostering freedom of expression in a liberated local art scene. The Trump administration is charging ahead with the building of a contested Triumphal Arch and a White House ballroom. The Headlines AN ABOUT-TURNER. Most will immediately recognize the famous and rare self-portrait of a young J.M.W. Turner, in which he appears to lock his steady gaze with the viewer. It hangs in Tate Britain and is printed on £20 notes. But a Turner expert now claims the Romantic artist never painted it, reports the Guardian. James Hamilton, who has written books and curated exhibitions about Turner, says the painting was misattributed when it was “lumped in” with all the artworks in the Turner Bequest to UK national museums, following his 1851 death. “But it was never, even on early lists, a ‘self-portrait.’ It was always a ‘portrait of Turner.’ Gradually, over the years, it became an assumption that it was by him,” said Hamilton. Instead, the expert believes that the gifted portraitist …

Good Morning! Iran denies ever withdrawing from the Venice Biennale, and the Somalia Pavilion sparks controversy. A new report led by France‘s parliament has revealed wide-ranging flaws in the country’s museum security management. US Interior Department staff are concerned that Trump‘s Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool repairs are behind schedule and of poor quality. The Headlines VEXED IN VENICE. News from this year’s politically mired Venice Biennale keeps coming. For starters, the Art Newspaper  reports that Iran is still negotiating its participation in the Biennale. The general director of visual arts at Iran’s Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance—Mahdizadeh Tehrani— denied that the state ever withdrew from the exhibition this year, and said the country still hopes to take part in some capacity. Last week, Biennale organizers announced Iran would not be represented at its pavilion. Elsewhere, according to ArtReview, Somali artists and cultural workers have expressed “deep disappointment and concern” about the Somalia Pavilion. In one open letter, the Somali Arts Foundation(SAF) alleged the exhibition was “led and organized by Somali diaspora figures in collaboration with their European colleagues … while artists and arts organizations based in Somalia were neither meaningfully consulted nor included.” …

Keir Starmer to hold talks with Wes Streeting on Wednesday morning | Politics | News

Sir Keir Starmer is expected to meet with Wes Streeting on Wednesday morning (Image: PA) Health Secretary Wes Streeting – seen as a leading contender to enter a future leadership race – is due to hold talks with the Prime Minister on Wednesday morning. He expected to ask Sir Keir how he plans to “get us out of this mess”. A belearguered Sir Keir Starmer is clinging to power in the face of ministerial resignations and scores of Labour MPs calling on him to go. The Labour leader’s hopes that ministers would not turn on him were dashed when four resigned during the course of the day. The biggest blow came when Jess Phillips, the minister for safeguarding and violence against women and girls, quit. A milestone was passed when the number of MPs calling for the Prime Minister to bring the curtain down on his time in Downing Street passed 81 – enough to trigger a leadership contest if they unite behind a single candidate. Deputy prime minister David Lammy insists no rival is …

A nonprofit is suing the Trump Administration for painting D.C.’s Reflecting Pool blue. France’s president says new law for restituting art looted during colonialism is “unstoppable.” The Headlines AN ARTWORK A DAY KEEPS … YOU YOUNGER? A new study has found that enjoying art—whether experiencing it or making it yourself—can be correlated to slowing the biological aging process, with the “same effect on aging as a weekly workout,” reports the Times of London. (Anyone who recently spent a week tramping across Venice from one exhibit to the next would have to agree.) Researchers from University College London (UCL) found that at least a weekly dose of art—preferably of diverse forms and types—made people on average about a year younger, as suggested by changes to DNA and in terms of overall health, than those who rarely treated themselves to the creative arts. In fact, the study, published in Innovation in Aging, concluded that the …

Dawn breaks, but does that mean you should break into a sweat? The morning vs. evening workout debate has long simmered, with advocates on each side professing that their way of working out is better than the other. People generally fall into one of the two camps—those who like to “get it out of the way” in the morning, so they can feel better about themselves throughout the day as the endorphins trickle through, or those who prefer an evening workout to wash away hours of slouching in front of a screen. But is sunrise better than sunset when it comes to getting sweaty? Or do those fitness night owls have it right when pumping iron as dusk settles? We asked the experts to find out. Benefits of a morning workout There’s something to be said for starting your day on the front foot. Contrary to how you feel after switching your fourth alarm off, you’re at your most primed to hit the rowing machine or elliptical in the morning, thanks to your body’s built-in …
