Actress Rebecca Lim welcomes second child, a baby girl

Actress Rebecca Lim welcomes second child, a baby girl

While her son rightfully takes his time, the rest of the family has been elated. “My in-laws are very excited because my husband Matthew has always been the only son, so they’ve never had a baby girl in the family – that makes our girl the first princess,” Lim said, laughing.  “And my mum is very happy and has been helping me with so much. From buying all my confinement food and groceries to sending my son to school and picking him up, she’s been doing a lot of heavy lifting.” In an interview with 8days, Lim also revealed how eventful the birth was. Her husband, Matthew Webster, also 39, was in Indonesia for a work trip when she went into labour. Webster had already committed to the trip with the expectation that the baby would arrive about two weeks earlier, but she arrived later than anticipated. “Thankfully, he managed to take an earlier flight back – his colleagues were very understanding – and came back about three hours before the birth,” Lim told 8days. …

Matrescence: Why motherhood can affect your sense of self

Matrescence: Why motherhood can affect your sense of self

When a woman becomes a mother, she becomes a completely different person in many ways – physically, emotionally and socially. This phase of becoming a mother is known as matrescence. The term was coined in the 1970s by American medical anthropologist Dana Louise Raphael, who described it as “the time of mother-becoming”. To put it simply, when a baby is born, a mother is born too. And while support is usually at hand in terms of looking after a child, women tend to be left to their own devices to deal with this big life change. “Matrescence is often described as the motherhood equivalent of adolescence,” said Elle Cheng, a psychotherapist and matrescence coach in Singapore. “It is the developmental phase where a woman undergoes a profound psychological, emotional and identity transformation as she moves from thinking about conception, through pregnancy and into motherhood.” To help with this life transition, some women are getting guidance from a matrescence coach. Sara Pantry is a matrescence practitioner in Singapore who founded Return Ready, a peer-to-peer mentorship programme …

For the special day, Tallulah took to Instagram and first shared a photo of the two all glammed up, Tallulah wearing a black, see-through Gucci top while Demi appeared in a beaded gown.  She next shared a throwback photo of Demi in a far more casual outfit, posing next to a baby Tallulah, while carrying a tiny dog. Tallulah last shared a photo of Demi with her Golden Globe from 2025. “Happy Mother’s Day to my northern lights @demimoore — I love tiny dogs because you love tiny dogs,” Tallualh captioned her post, a nod to Demi’s trusty sidekick, her …

My egg, my wife’s womb, our baby: how we found our way to lesbian motherhood | IVF

My egg, my wife’s womb, our baby: how we found our way to lesbian motherhood | IVF

Late last year, it became my friend’s favourite party trick. “Rosa’s going to have a baby next week,” she’d say to a group of people who didn’t know me. I’d watch their faces as they tried to inconspicuously scan my body, detecting no sign of a bump. “Congratulations!” they’d say, smiles tight, clearly wondering what other delusions I might have up my sleeve. I was, however, about to have a baby. At daybreak on a warm October day, our beautiful, 6lb 10oz, 19.5in‑long baby girl was born; skin pink and taut, scream wet and bright. I held my wife’s hand and head as our daughter emerged from her body – a daughter who had initially come from me. We did what is known as reciprocal IVF: a route to parenthood that is increasingly being used by queer people. First, we each made embryos by retrieving our eggs and having them fertilised with donor sperm. With “normal” IVF, the embryo, if you’re lucky enough to have made one, returns to the body that made the eggs. With reciprocal IVF, …

In underground breastmilk donation networks, motherhood transcends politics and theology

In underground breastmilk donation networks, motherhood transcends politics and theology

(RNS) — When the Rev. Kim Sue Jackson, a 41-year-old Episcopal priest and Georgia state senator, started browsing Facebook for breastmilk donors in the Atlanta area, she didn’t think religion would play much of a role in the effort.  Over nine months, she drove through the state to pick up coolers full of breastmilk from mothers she met on the internet, to feed to her son, Khalil. Sometimes, the families giving away their excess breastmilk spoke about their gesture as an act of faith, she said. One of the first openly gay priests of color in the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta, Jackson’s search led her to cross paths with mothers and other Christians whose lifestyles and theologies differ from hers. She recalled picking up milk from families who homeschooled their children, viewed raising large families as their faith mission and whose mothers stayed home to tend to their families. Their decision to donate, she said, was born out of the desire to “be a blessing for other families.” Breanna Seibel talks on social media often …

Mother Ventures is looking at moms as the ‘economic engine’

Mother Ventures is looking at moms as the ‘economic engine’

As families across the U.S. prepare to celebrate Mother’s Day this Sunday, Allison Stern is looking beyond the single day of appreciation. Stern just closed $10 million in commitments for her debut early-stage fund, Mother Ventures, which focuses exclusively on the mother as a consumer. “In the U.S., moms are responsible for 85% of household purchases and have $2.4 trillion in spending power,” Stern (pictured below) told TechCrunch. “The numbers say that moms are the buyers, and they really are a very unique economic engine.” Stern, a mother of two, is tapping into that spending clout by backing startups that reflect the needs of modern mothers. Since launching Mother Ventures two years ago, she has already deployed $4 million into 13 startups. Her portfolio includes Coral Care, which allows instant booking of pediatric specialists for children with developmental delays, and Tin Can, a popular Wi-Fi-enabled “landline” designed as a retro-style phone for kids. Before launching her own fund, she co-founded Tubular Labs, a social video analytics startup she helped grow to $25 million in annual recurring revenue …

When Birth Trauma Changes Your Experience of Motherhood

When Birth Trauma Changes Your Experience of Motherhood

When Birth Feels Traumatic Childbirth is often described as empowering, meaningful, and joyful. While birth can absolutely be those things, many women are surprised by how frightening and overwhelming it can also become. An emergency C-section. A postpartum hemorrhage. A baby in the NICU. A moment where things suddenly no longer feel safe. For some women, childbirth becomes not just medically intense but traumatic. Research suggests that a significant number of women experience childbirth as traumatic, and some go on to develop symptoms of postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). But even without meeting criteria for PTSD, many women find themselves emotionally changed by what happened during labor and delivery. They may replay moments from the birth repeatedly in their minds. They may feel anxious before medical appointments, emotionally numb afterward, or disconnected from themselves in ways they did not expect. One of the most painful parts is often the feeling that they “should” simply be grateful because the baby is healthy. But trauma and gratitude can coexist. The Grief That Often Accompanies Birth Trauma Many …
