Politics Home Article | Andy Burnham Plans Meetings With Labour MPs As He Pushes For No 10

2 min read1 hr Exclusive: Andy Burnham is expected to meet with Labour MPs on Monday as he prepares a bid to replace Keir Starmer in Downing Street. The incoming MP for Makerfield is understood to be prioritising MPs with whom he does not have strong relationships, like those elected at the 2024 general election, several sources told PoliticsHome. Burnham pulled off a landslide victory at the Makerfield by-election on Thursday, finishing far ahead of second-placed Reform UK and winning more voters than all other candidates combined. The former health secretary, who now must resign as Greater Manchester mayor to return to the House of Commons, said the result was a “loud cry for change”. Attention now turns to when and how Burnham will challenge the leadership of Keir Starmer. The Prime Minister reiterated this morning that he would stand in any Labour leadership contest and would not “walk away”. PoliticsHome understands that the Burnham operation is reluctant to take an overly aggressive approach to removing Starmer, and hopes that the PM will agree in …

Politics Home Article | Red Wall Chair Joins Labour MPs Calling For Net Zero Rethink

4 min read56 min The chair of the Red Wall caucus of Labour MPs has called on ministers to keep British oil and gas in the energy mix as the government’s net zero policy comes under backbench pressure.  Jo White, the Labour MP for Bassetlaw, told PoliticsHome that North Sea reserves should be kept in the picture until the UK has shifted to homegrown green energy. “We need an energy policy that lifts the foot off the throttle for UK growth and jobs by ensuring that the severe impacts of rising costs from imported energy are mitigated through targeted interventions, a faster shift to home-grown green energy production, and keeps UK oil and gas in the mix until that point is reached,” said White, whose caucus is made up of Labour MPs representing seats in the North and the Midlands. The government is under pressure to take more action to protect household bills from the effects of the Iran war on global energy prices.  At the same time, questions over Keir Starmer’s future in …

MPs condemn ‘egregious’ Assisted Dying Bill filibuster in the House of Lords – Humanists UK

MPs from across the political divide spoke out about the coordinated filibuster of the Assisted Dying Bill by a minority of peers in the House of Lords. During a Westminster Hall debate triggered by a public petition held yesterday, MPs lamented that the Bill fell without a single vote, directly contravening the clear will of the Commons, and undermining public trust in Parliament. Humanists UK joins MPs in calling out the unjust filibuster and calls on MPs to bring back the Bill. The Westminster Hall debate was triggered when a petition ‘to ensure Bills backed by MPs & public can complete all stages in Parliament’ received over 114,000 signatures. The petition was tabled by Sophie Blake, a mother living with Stage 4 Breast Cancer in memory of Nathaniel Dye MBE who died early this year. The petition states: We believe the decision of MPs must be respected, especially on matters of social change, and that unelected Lords have a responsibility to scrutinise bills, not block them. With over 1,000 amendments tabled to the Terminally Ill …

Government undermining UK defence as Keir Starmer’s dithering blasted by MPs | UK | News

The Prime Minister is set to finally release the Defence Investment Plan (Image: Getty) The government’s delay in publishing the Defence Investment Plan (DIP) has undermined the UK government’s ability to provide a stronger deterrent to its adversaries, MPs have claimed. The Public Accounts Committee warned that the long delay to the DIP risks squandering the opportunities provided by advances in technology, hindering the government’s attempts to modernise the Armed Forces. The plan, which had been due for release last autumn, has suffered a series of delays due to wranglings between the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and the Treasury, the Daily Express understands. Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown MP, Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, believes that excuses given for the delay “do not cut it”, as a report by the group found that delays are seriously undermining the Department’s efforts to modernise the Armed Forces and achieve value for money for the taxpayer The Defence Investment Plan will set out how modernisation will be funded (Image: Getty) Sir Geoffrey said: “Those responsible may argue there are …
