NCAA renews trademark fight with Kalshi over March Madness markets

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is again turning up the pressure on prediction market operator Kalshi, this time tying its trademark concerns directly to March Madness, the association’s signature men’s and women’s basketball tournaments. The NCAA claims that Kalshi has used its name, marks and event branding in ways that suggest an official link. March Madness is owned and controlled by the NCAA, and the association says any implication of endorsement or verification crosses a legal line. In a statement sent to ReadWrite, the NCAA made its position clear: “The NCAA has previously addressed issues with Kalshi illegitimately using NCAA marks for their offerings. This continues to be a misrepresentation of any NCAA involvement, and we have requested immediate removal of NCAA trademarks.” “The NCAA has previously addressed issues with Kalshi illegitimately using NCAA marks for their offerings. NCAA Approves Uniform Patches, Opening up Revenue Possibilities for Athletic Departments

NCAA Approves Uniform Patches, Opening up Revenue Possibilities for Athletic Departments

The NCAA unearthed another revenue stream Friday when Division I leaders approved patches for uniforms in a move that could generate millions to fund athletic departments that are looking for new ways to pay players. Beginning Aug. 1, Division I teams can place up to two patches of no more than 4 square inches on uniforms for regular-season games. Those are in addition to the logos already allowed for the uniform manufacturers. Rules committees for the postseason will decide how to handle March Madness, the College World Series and other playoff tournaments, with attention being paid to making sure individual schools aren’t advertising for companies that compete with NCAA sponsors. The College Football Playoff has also been looking into how to allow patches for that sport’s postseason. Some NBA teams make eight-figure sums on selling parts of their team uniforms to advertisers. Sports Business Journal reported earlier this month that research has shown college football and basketball teams could earn between $500,000 and $12 million for their patches. It’s the latest move for schools to …

NCAA has its prop bet ban request sunk by Missouri watchdog

NCAA has its prop bet ban request sunk by Missouri watchdog

Missouri gambling regulators have rejected the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) request to block prop bets on college games. With months of fiascos surrounding the style of betting and college-level games, it comes as a surprise that the ban wasn’t implemented. The NCAA claims that there’s been a rise in harassment by bettors, as well as pointing to insider information being used to profit via gambling. Another implication of keeping prop bets around is that college students have been found to have bet on themselves, manipulating the game for their own gain. Despite providing data and examples of issues that have cropped up, the Missouri Gaming Commission (MGC) rejected the NCAA’s request. If the MGC had agreed to amend its sports betting rules, it could have put an end to some manipulation of games. So why did the MGC reject the proposition? It comes down to how fresh legal gambling is in the state. Sports betting was just allowed on December 1, 2025, and the Commission argues that it’s still too new to begin amending …

Almost a decade of young NCAA athletes at odds with college gambling

Almost a decade of young NCAA athletes at odds with college gambling

College athletics entered a new era on May 14, 2018, when the U.S. Supreme Court issued its ruling in Murphy v. National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), a decision that removed the federal barrier preventing states from authorising sports betting. The ruling dissolved the federal prohibition on sports betting at the collegiate level, but it did not legalize gambling outright. Instead, it gave individual states the authority to decide. Since that time, athletes and colleges have been exposed to unprecedented levels of funding, sponsorship, and commercial interest. The other side of that bargain, however, has been the steady growth of illicit betting activity and a regulatory framework that critics argue has failed to adequately protect impressionable, developing talent. As we previously reported, the NCAA has been rocked by a betting scandal with roots that weave to the heart of college athletics, and the machine-like relentlessness of a gambling ecosystem that has increasingly become a lifeblood of academic sporting environments. NCAA: a decade of commodification Since 2018, exposing young talent to the world of sports betting has …

Ex-Porn Star Apologizes for Viral Crowd Moment During Miami’s NCAA Loss

Former adult film star Abella Danger found herself at the center of unexpected attention this week after a televised crowd shot during the NCAA final sparked online chatter and attention she now says she never wanted and for which she is apologizing. Danger, who is currently a student at the University of Miami, appeared briefly on ESPN’s broadcast Monday night as the Hurricanes lost to the Indiana Hoosiers in a widely watched playoff final at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. The camera lingered on a visibly frustrated fan in the stands during a pivotal moment late in the game — a fan viewers quickly recognized as the world-famous former porn star. Born Amirah Day, the 30-year-old has become one of the most recognizable Hurricanes supporters this season, as Miami pushed toward what would have been its sixth national championship appearance. That run ended Monday night with a six-point loss to Indiana, a defeat that appeared to hit Day particularly hard. Within hours, clips of the ESPN broadcast circulated widely on social media, with some users joking …

NCAA urges gambling commissions to eliminate prop bets

NCAA urges gambling commissions to eliminate prop bets

The National Collegiate Athletic Association’s President Charlie Baker (NCAA) is calling on state gambling commissions to adjust state laws and regulations, so gambling on individual prop bets is removed. A letter from the NCAA was sent to these state gambling commissions, with a reiteration of its first request from 2023, when it asked for state laws and regulations to be amended to include a stronger framework for the protection of student-athlete well-being. NCAA urges gambling commissions to eliminate prop bets. https://t.co/rfdRnldiAf — NCAA News (@NCAA_PR) January 15, 2026 As well as the elimination of prop bets and other ‘high-risk’ prop bets like first half unders, the changes also included stricter accountability for bettors found to have harassed student-athletes and/or influenced betting behaviors. “The Association has and will continue to aggressively pursue sports betting violations in college athletics using a layered integrity monitoring program that covers over 22,000 contests, but we still need the remaining states and regulators to eliminate threats to integrity to better protect athletes and leagues from integrity risks and predatory bettors,” Baker …

Inside the NCAA point-shaving scandal and why it was so hard to catch

Inside the NCAA point-shaving scandal and why it was so hard to catch

Federal prosecutors say a sprawling, international point-shaving scheme corrupted NCAA Division I men’s basketball games and professional contests in China, exploiting one of the most difficult betting markets in sports to police aka point spreads. The case, United States v. Smith et al., was unsealed on Thursday (January 14), in federal court in Philadelphia. Prosecutors say that 26 people were involved in a long-running scheme that included bribery tied to sporting events, wire fraud, conspiracy, and helping others carry out the alleged crimes. Authorities emphasize that these are only allegations, and that every defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court. At a news conference, David Metcalf, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, described the case as “the criminal corruption of collegiate athletics.” According to the indictment reviewed by ReadWrite, the scheme allegedly kicked off in 2022 in China’s Basketball Association before later spilling into U.S. college basketball. Prosecutors claim that professional bettors Marves Fairley and Shane Hennen brought in former NBA and LSU standout Antonio Blakeney, who was playing …

Federal prosecutors unseal sweeping NCAA basketball illegal game-fixing scheme tied to China

Federal prosecutors in Philadelphia have unsealed criminal charges in what they say was a years-long, international scheme to rig NCAA Division I men’s basketball games, and even some pro games in China, all to make money through illegal sports betting. Speaking at a news conference, David Metcalf, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, said the case involves “the criminal corruption of collegiate athletics” and charged that 26 defendants were behind game-fixing operations in the U.S. and overseas. Stressing the broader significance of the allegations, Metcalf said: “When criminals pollute the purity of sports by manipulating competition, it doesn’t just imperil the integrity of sports betting markets. It imperils the integrity of sport itself and everything that sports represent to us.” According to the indictment filed in federal court and reviewed by ReadWrite, the defendants are charged with violations including bribery in sporting contests, wire fraud, conspiracy, and aiding and abetting. Prosecutors stress that the charges are only allegations, and that all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they’re proven guilty. The …

NCAA urges CFTC to suspend college sport prediction markets

NCAA urges CFTC to suspend college sport prediction markets

The President, Charlie Baker, of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is calling for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to halt all college sport offerings in prediction markets, until ‘appropriate regulations’ can be put in place. The CFTC is the regulatory body that presides over prediction markets, with these being a controversial addition to the world of gambling. Just as we need Congress to stabilize eligibility, we need federal regulators to stabilize these markets. The answer cannot be the status quo. We need one set of fair standards. https://t.co/U6qTg9xwfr — Charlie Baker (@CharlieBakerMA) January 14, 2026 “Just as we need Congress to stabilize eligibility, we need federal regulators to stabilize these markets,” Charlie Baker said in a press release. “The answer cannot be the status quo. We need one set of fair, transparent standards.” NCAA asks for a robust system of safeguards around prediction markets To further hone in on their point, the NCAA has sent a letter to the regulatory body, as it asks for a robust system of safeguards to be put …
