Is the $599 MacBook Neo Too Popular?

Apple’s MacBook Air Neo, launched at an unprecedented price of $599, has quickly established itself as a standout in the tech market. Its affordability, seamless integration with macOS, and Apple’s trusted reputation have made it particularly appealing to first-time Mac users. However, this success has also revealed a critical supply chain challenge tied to Apple’s innovative use of repurposed A18 Pro chips. As demand for the Neo surges beyond expectations, Apple faces pivotal decisions that could shape not only the future of its entry-level laptop but also its broader market strategy. What Makes the MacBook Air Neo So Popular? The MacBook Air Neo has redefined the expectations for an entry-level Apple laptop. By using repurposed A18 Pro chips, originally designed for iPhones but slightly below the performance standards required for flagship devices, Apple has managed to deliver a high-quality product at a highly competitive price. The Surprising MacBook Neo Competitor You’ve Never Heard Of

The Surprising MacBook Neo Competitor You’ve Never Heard Of

The MacBook Neo made quite a splash when it landed in March. $599 for a MacBook felt groundbreaking, and it was easy for casual onlookers to declare that Windows laptops had no true answer to it. But what if I told you there was a Windows option that was better in almost every way? That’s the HP OmniBook 5, a laptop you’ve probably never heard of unless you watch the space closely. I’ve been recommending it ever since I tested it last month. The price has been fluctuating, but more often than not, the 14-inch model was selling for $500. You read that right: $500. Today, the cheapest, most consistent price you’ll find it for is $730 over at Walmart, but I’ve seen the HP frequently drop the price from $1,050 down to around $500. And just take a look at what you get for the price, because it’s absolutely stacked. It comes with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage, double what you get on the $599 MacBook Neo. There’s a 16-inch …

Five hundred bucks. That’s the price difference between the MacBook Neo and the MacBook Air. Having spent a lot of time testing and using both laptops in the MacBook lineup, I can say that there’s a clear demographic for both of these devices. As a longtime laptop tester, my goal here is twofold. I want to make sure that you buy the right MacBook, and I also want to make sure you don’t overpay or underbuy. Deciding isn’t actually as difficult as you might think. Don’t think you want a MacBook after all? Don’t forget to check out our guides to the Best Windows Laptops, the Best Chromebooks, or the Best Linux Laptops. The Easy Way to Decide Photograph: Luke Larsen There’s one easy question to answer if you’re stuck between the Neo and the Air. Is this for a job that you will use full-time? Because if you’re sitting in front of this laptop for eight hours a day, don’t bother considering the MacBook Neo. You’ll likely be tempted by the price, but it’s …

After using the MacBook Neo for weeks, switching to the Air has been refreshingly sweet

Apple MacBook Air M5 (15-inch) pros and cons Pros 512GB of storage standard Faster SSD read/write speeds Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 Same thin and light build Cons Incremental upgrades compared to M4 $100 more expensive Battery life is about the same Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. Apple’s MacBook Air is no longer the baby in the family. In fact, it’s looking rather grown up these days. Last year, the MacBook Air got a free upgrade to a baseline 16GB of RAM. This year’s MacBook Air M5 follows that up with an increase to 512GB of standard storage. The SSD is also twice as fast as the M4 — an impressive increase in read and write speeds for just one generation.  With core hardware improvements, form factor maturation, and the addition of the Neo to Apple’s lineup, the Air is less the Pro’s younger sibling and more the “laptop for everybody”, with enough horsepower to compete with the Pro on many tasks. There’s even a strong case that it’s the scarier competitor to …
