Netherlands coach Xavi says he was at fault for poor first half in Greece

THESSALONIKI, Greece, Oct 2 : Netherlands coach Xavi Hernandez said he was to blame for his side’s poor first-half performance in Thursday’s Nations League game against Greece after they trailed 2-0 before fighting back to draw. The result maintained the former World Cup winner’s unbeaten start to his tenure in charge of the Dutch national team, but it proved a close-run contest with Tijjani Reijnders equalising a minute from the end at Stadio Toumbas. Greece had opened up a two-goal lead at the break through Fotis Ioannidis and Georgios Masouras before Virgil van Dijk halved the deficit just before the hour mark. “I’m never happy with a draw. But the first half was very poor. That was my fault as a coach. Maybe I made things unclear for the players by making too many changes,” Xavi said. Xavi made three changes at the start of the second half, and the Dutch dominated from then on. “I’m just trying to be honest, because that’s who I am,” said Xavi. “At halftime, I told the players exactly the …

The Defence Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) rushed to the scene to examine the item and said the bag was safe and no explosive was found, a spokesperson for the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee said. “He was indeed carrying a bag containing material that resembled a bomb or explosive. He was subsequently arrested,” the spokesperson also said. According to reports from Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, a man walked out of the air base gate around 12.15 pm local time and told security that he had a bomb with him. He then placed a bag on the ground and took out items that appeared to be part of an explosive, the newspaper also said. A cordon was in place, and the area was evacuated while the EOD examined the item. The investigation, which lasted until around 4pm, confirmed that no explosives were found. John Macdougall | Afp | Getty Images German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the leaders of five other major European economies have urged “hundreds of billions” of dollars worth of cuts to the next EU budget as part of efforts to fund the continent’s defense. The European Union’s next long-term budget will cover the period from 2028 to 2034, with officials aiming to reach an agreement on spending priorities and limits by the end of this year. Over the summer, the European Commission presented its proposal for the next budget — known as the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) — which amounted to almost 2 trillion euros ($2.3 trillion). In a letter to Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin and European Council President António Costa, the leaders of Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Austria, Finland and Sweden said the proposal “will need to be reduced by several hundred billion euros.” Ireland currently holds the …

Netherlands to return to Eurovision as it drops boycott over Israel participation | Ents & Arts News

The Netherlands will return to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2027 after abandoning a boycott over Israel’s participation. Earlier this month, Ireland announced it would not participate in the event for a second year in a row, citing the ongoing loss of life in Gaza. Ireland, the Netherlands, Iceland, Spain and Slovenia shunned the competition in May in protest at the inclusion of Israel amid its military offensive in the Palestinian territory. Image: Eurovision 2026 winner Dara from Bulgaria. Pic: Reuters AvroTros, the broadcaster that usually facilitates the Dutch entry, said in August it would boycott Eurovision for a second year, arguing recent changes to the rules, preventing countries involved in “armed conflict” from hosting, were unclear. But it left the final decision in the hands of other broadcasters in the country, and on Wednesday the NPO – the umbrella organisation for the Dutch public broadcasting system – said it would take over responsibility for the Netherlands entry. The NPO said the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) had taken “important steps” in response to criticism by …

The U-turn comes after responsibility for managing the country’s entry was transferred from Dutch public service broadcaster Avrotros over to NPO. When Avrotros withdrew in August, it indicated that Israel’s continued involvement influenced the decision, pointing toward “humanitarian suffering in Gaza and the ongoing restrictions on press freedom”. In a statement published on NPO’s website, the network explained that Avrotros stepped down due to “sensitivities” surrounding the contest, confirming that NPO will instead select a Dutch entry for 2027. This follows new rule changes introduced by Eurovision organisers for 2027, under which a winning broadcaster will “automatically …

UK, US, Netherlands warn of Iranian spyware targeting dissidents | Cybersecurity News

Western intelligence agencies highlight ‘CHOSEN BRICK’ spyware targeting critics of Iran government abroad. Published On 15 Sep 202615 Sep 2026 The United States, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands have warned that Iranian spyware is being used to hunt dissidents living in the West. Iran is “almost certainly” using cyber operations to target Iranian critics of the regime, intelligence agencies from the trio of countries cautioned on Tuesday. In coordinated advisories, the FBI in the US, Britain’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and the Netherlands’ AIVD intelligence service all repeated the same warning. “The details of this cyber campaign reveal how Iran ruthlessly uses digital surveillance in pursuit of  its aim  to repress critics of the regime, stealing emails and messages and accessing devices,” said Paul Chichester, the director of Britain’s NCSC. Chichester highlighted a spyware family known as “CHOSEN BRICK” that is allegedly used by Iranian state-linked cyber actors to steal sensitive information through “spear-phishing” campaigns on messaging platforms including WhatsApp and Telegram. The FBI said that Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) was …

UK, US and Netherlands issue advisory on Iran-linked spyware

LONDON, Sept 15 : Britain, the United States and the Netherlands on Tuesday issued a joint cybersecurity advisory detailing spyware they say is used by Iranian state-linked actors to target dissidents, activists and journalists. Britain’s National Cyber Security Centre said Iranian state-linked cyber actors had used a spyware family known as “CHOSEN BRICK” to steal emails, messages and other sensitive information through “spear-phishing” campaigns on messaging platforms including WhatsApp and Telegram. “The details of this cyber campaign reveal  how Iran ruthlessly uses digital surveillance in pursuit of  its  aim  to  repress critics of the regime, stealing emails and messages and accessing devices,” Paul Chichester, NCSC director of operations, said in a statement. Iran’s embassy in London did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The malware, according to the advisory, can collect information from contact lists, emails and social media accounts, capture screen content and access a device’s microphone. The NCSC said some victims’ personal details had later appeared on pro-Iranian leak sites. The FBI, in its own advisory, said Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence …

Europe’s largest carbon capture and storage plant opens in the Netherlands

Europe’s largest carbon capture and storage plant opens in the Netherlands

Yara has begun operations at its Sluiskil fertiliser and ammonia facility in the Netherlands, launching what is described as Europe’s largest commercial carbon capture and storage (CCS) project. The facility in Zeeland will capture carbon dioxide produced during ammonia manufacturing before preparing it for permanent storage offshore. The project is designed to capture and liquefy up to 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year. The captured emissions will then be transported by ship to Norway, where the Northern Lights facility will inject them approximately 2,600 metres beneath the North Sea seabed for permanent geological storage. The project is expected to capture and store around 12 million tonnes of CO₂ over 15 years, giving energy-intensive fertiliser production a route to substantially reduce its emissions without moving manufacturing outside Europe. It also demonstrates how cross-border infrastructure could become an important part of the continent’s industrial decarbonisation strategy. Speaking on the landmark facility, Wopke Hoekstra, European Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero and Clean Growth, said: “Europe needs practical climate solutions that deliver real emissions reductions while strengthening industrial competitiveness. …
