Clea Newman Carries the Torch for Her Father’s Philanthropic Legacy

Clea Newman Carries the Torch for Her Father’s Philanthropic Legacy

Clea Newman remembers her first time volunteering with SeriousFun, the globe-spanning, free camp network for ill children. It was just the one camp back then — in Connecticut — set up by celebrated actor, activist and American icon Paul Newman in 1988. “My dad said, ‘Why don’t you go up and volunteer as a counselor?’” she recalls to The Hollywood Reporter. “I never really babysat much. I was a little nervous about it. And he said, ‘Just try it.’” At the time, Newman, the youngest of his six children, had a whole career mapped out in law. She giggles thinking about it now. “That ended up not being the plan,” she says over Zoom, those signature Newman eyes — piercing blue — twinkling. Soon after she arrived at camp, she was struck down by poison ivy. “[It was] horrible — all over my legs,” she remembers. But luckily for Newman, she had befriended three young boys, around the age of nine, staying at the camp, who took better care of her than she could ever have imagined: “They took …

Harry Belafonte Hosted Everyone From Robert F. Kennedy and Paul Newman to Martin Luther King Jr. on ‘The Tonight Show’

Harry Belafonte Hosted Everyone From Robert F. Kennedy and Paul Newman to Martin Luther King Jr. on ‘The Tonight Show’

“I guess I could use some of this time to get into pleasantries,” Belafonte begins, “to talk about the many experiences I’ve had with you not only here but in Europe and other places.” This, it’s clear as he pauses to raise his head, isn’t what he wants to do. “What do you have in store for us this summer?” Now King joins in the crowd’s nervy laughter: the summer of 1968, everyone seems to sense, is going to be a doozy. And America’s foremost activist for justice is glad to explain, by way of a capsule history of the past few years in American life, what he’s focusing on now. King says that the passage of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts were great victories. But they’ve done little, in the three years since the latter’s passage, to undo inequalities built over centuries. And redressing such ills will require more than confronting prejudice. “I feel,” he intones, “that we are in the midst of a most critical period in our nation. And the …

Morbid by Saul Justin Newman review – why everything you think you know about longevity is wrong | Science and nature books

Morbid by Saul Justin Newman review – why everything you think you know about longevity is wrong | Science and nature books

There is a special place in hell reserved for doctors who trade on their authority, status and medical training to monetise public fear and gullibility. Every time I scroll past a qualified physician touting elixirs that promise youthful vigour, cellulite-free thighs or gut microbiome makeovers, I want to poke their fraudulent eyes out. At best, these charlatans have chosen lining their pockets over helping others. At worst, as in the case of the Covid deniers and anti-vaxxers, they are actively dangerous – something I witnessed first-hand on hospital wards in 2021 as unvaccinated patients succumbed to the disease. Nowhere is human hope monetised more ruthlessly by medical grifters than in the anti-ageing industry. Our inescapable fate – decrepitude and death – makes us ripe for exploitation. Who doesn’t want to pop a pill or hook themselves up to an IV infusion that, for only £99.99 a month, will magically stave off the moment you turn into your grandparents? In Morbid, debut author Saul Justin Newman, a research fellow at the University of Oxford’s Institute of …

Cathy Newman on embracing our new political landscape with new show

Cathy Newman on embracing our new political landscape with new show

This article first appeared in Radio Times magazine. I cut my journalistic teeth as a political correspondent in the 1990s and 2000s, first on newspapers and then on television. I remember those years of Cool Britannia, with the Spice Girls and Noel Gallagher traipsing into Number 10. Even when that New Labour honeymoon soured, the TB-GBs (the nickname for Tony Blair, the then prime minister, and his arguments with his chancellor Gordon Brown) seem somehow quaint compared with the existential turbulence of recent administrations. Returning to Westminster to launch The Cathy Newman Show, a new flagship nightly show airing on Sky News and streaming on YouTube, the mood couldn’t be more different. Politics feels shoutier, more bitter. The bit of green carpet that divides government from opposition looks like a chasm. It’s undeniable that politics has changed dramatically and the world has, too. Just days before the local elections, the two party political system that has reigned supreme throughout my professional life appears shattered. And the media landscape has been upended as well. The 2026 …

British pop-soul sensation Skye Newman: ‘I come from a vulnerable background and there are vultures in this world’ | Pop and rock

Although she is on course for pop stardom, with two nominations at next week’s Brit awards, 22-year-old Skye Newman lives in a cabin at the bottom of her sister’s garden in London. It’s the backdrop for the music video to her song Hairdresser, which has 7.5m views on YouTube. In the clip, she is made up, her hair in rollers, lounging with a gaggle of friends. Licking her fingertips to roll a joint, she laments a one-sided friendship with another woman: “When I’m needed, know I’ll be there first / You don’t reciprocate and, girl, that hurts.” It’s typical of Newman’s songcraft: ballad-driven contemporary soul that goes beyond romantic heartbreak to cover all kinds of pain and recrimination. The cabin gives Newman independence, but also proximity to family in the main house – which is where she is sitting today, barefaced, barefoot and drowning in an oversized black tracksuit. Her sister, who is also Newman’s manager, pops my tea on to the table and hovers nearby. The sisters each have their blond hair slicked back …

Cathy Newman to leave Channel 4 News for Sky

Cathy Newman picks up the Interviewer of the Year prize from Rob McGibbon and Jeremy Vine at the British Journalism Awards 2025. Picture: Press Gazette/Adam Duke Photography Channel 4 News presenter and investigations editor Cathy Newman is leaving the programme after 20 years to “return to Westminster” for Sky News. Sky said Newman will front its 7pm flagship daily politics slot, present a podcast and work on long-form investigations and documentaries. Sky News is bolstering its politics output to support its pivot, announced at the start of last year, from focusing on breaking, live TV news towards premium video across digital platforms. It said Newman’s original investigative journalism would also be a key part of this evolution. Newman was named Journalist of the Year and Interviewer of the Year at the British Journalism Awards in December for her eight-year investigation into an abuse scandal in the Church of England and her exclusive interview with Justin Welby that led to the first ever forced resignation by an Archbishop. Her work also contributed to Channel 4 News …
