Taiwan Ruling Party Nominates Lawmaker Sanctioned by China for Taipei Mayor

TAIPEI, May 13 (Reuters) – Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) nominated lawmaker Puma Shen on Wednesday as its candidate for Taipei mayor, a man who has been sanctioned by China for what Beijing has described as his support for “separatism”. Taiwan, which China views as its ‌own territory, holds key mayoral ‌and county chief elections in November, which while mostly focusing on local issues will offer a gauge of party support ahead of the next presidential vote in early 2028. Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an from Taiwan’s main opposition party the Kuomintang (KMT) will present Shen a stiff challenge given opinion polls have favoured Chiang’s chances at re-election. President Lai Ching-te, who is also DPP chairman, told a news conference to introduce Shen as the candidate that he was a “first rate talent” who understands how hard it was for Taiwan to transition from authoritarian rule to democracy. “He also understands that the greatest threat to democracy and human rights still comes from China, and so he has actively engaged in efforts to counter cognitive …

Yen Tumbles After Takaichi Nominates Two Prominent Doves To The BOJ

It’s not just Trump who is stacking his central bank with uberdoves. After plunging yesterday following a Mainichi report that Japanese Prime Minister expressed concerns at more BOJ rate hikes, the yen has tumbled more, sending the USDJPY as high as 156.80 this morning, the highest since Feb 9, after the Takaichi administration announced two nominees to succeed the outgoing BoJ Policy Board members later this year, both of whom have a history of dovish commentary. Toichiro Asada was presented as a successor to Asahi Noguchi (whose term ends on March 31st), and Ayano Sato has been presented as a successor Junko Nakagawa (whose terms ends on June 29th). In both cases, the nominees’ comments over recent years had leaned towards a pro-reflation and pro-accommodative-policy stance, though neither has directly opined on the current stance of BoJ policy as of yet, according to Goldman’s Stuart Jenkins.  The outgoing Board members Noguchi and Nakagawa are both generally seen as being on the dovish end of the committee though, arguing for a more limited compositional shift in …

Indonesia President Prabowo nominates nephew as central bank deputy governor

The rupiah currency hit a nine-month low on Monday (Jan 19) amid uncertainty from a new US tariff policy, concerns over Indonesia’s widening fiscal deficit and news of the central bank nomination. Prabowo’s nephew Thomas Djiwandono, currently a deputy finance minister, is one of three nominees whose names have been submitted to parliament, presidential spokesperson Prasetyo Hadi told reporters. The nomination follows the resignation of Bank Indonesia’s (BI) deputy governor Juda Agung, he said, before the end of his tenure in 2027.
